Capcom: "We Have Two Different Sets Of Resident Evil Fans"

In our review, we said Resident Evil 6 suffered from a major identity crisis; i.e., it had no idea what it wanted to be.

And maybe that's why Capcom says future entries in the series will be more "focused." In speaking to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Capcom vice president of strategic planning and business development Christian Svensson said they're going to "scale back, take stock of what worked and what didn't work, and think about what the future of the franchise is."

Well, the long-time fans undoubtedly want to see their beloved series return to true survival/horror, although they may not happen. Despite these fans, Capcom believes there's another set of fans to whom they must also cater; these are the followers who want more of an action approach. Said Svensson:

"Well, you have to understand, we have a couple different sets of Resident Evil fans. We have those who love Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, Code Veronica, and Zero, and then we have those who came along during the RE4 era and like things a little more action-oriented, and RE5 even more [action-oriented]. And then RE6 was even more action-focused than that."

Svensson added that he's not sure RE6 "worked out exactly" the way they had hoped, but more focus is definitely in the cards. Doesn't that mean they're going to pick a side now? Survival/horror or all-out action...? And why do we get the feeling that we already know what Capcom is gonna pick? I mean, it almost seems inevitable.

They wouldn't get it even if we hit them over the head with it.

They wouldn't be in this mess if they'd just made a new IP when they decided to make a more action-oriented series.

Well if there are two type of fans, I definitely fall into the older catagory. I love the first 3 Resident Evils for many reasons you've all heard before. But if they are really that indecisive on which route to take the series maybe they should have a look at the industry today and see what is lacking. Horror games have almost become non-existant due to the action overhaul. I for one would love to see a classic styled RE like Zero or the GC remake of RE1 - But I fear most people just don't have the patience for it.

what do we have to do to convince crapcom there IS NO FANS that want action oriented RE games!
if i wanted a action game why the ^%$# would i buy a RE game?
thats like saying i want a cheap, easy to drive, practical, cheap to run, kind to the environment car, that can seat 7 people, and carry the weekly shopping while towing a caravan.
i know ill buy alonsos 2012 F1 car!

exactly what pisses me off about the world today, companies refuse to believe and understand people want uniqueness.
take console manufactures obsession with turning gaming consoles into entertainment hubs.
there obsessed into turning consoles into things we watch TV shows and movies on.
now answer me 1 simple question, why would i buy a next gen console when my current console, phone, laptop, tablet, PC, or even smart TV already does said features?
exactly whats wrong with the industry.
instead of saying hey we dont have any of this, perhaps people would enjoy that because they dont get much of it.
there set in the mind that people want the same thing day in day out for the rest of their lives!
i love prawn salad, one of my most, no my most favorite thing to eat!
but if someone said to me i had to eat nothing but that for the rest of my life, the next thing id be doing is climbing the tallest building i could find!

True survival horror. That is where it's at. Back when RE 1 first came out, I played this game in a dark room. I really got into this game. I jumped out of my seat when I first came into contact with the zombie dogs. LOL.

You have to create an atmosphere that makes you intense to begin with. You have to have the right music and play it sparingly. Make it real quiet then make it BURST OUT when something happens.

I imagine making a true survival horror game is a hell of a lot harder than what they did with RE 6.

I hope they are successful.

The old PS1 days have such good memories for me.

Re4 is the bar where the newest Re games should measured against.

Re4 had a balance of classic Re style puzzles exploration and action.
Re5 had lots of zombies, not enough ammo hardly any puzzles and ridiculous over the top chase sequences.
Re6 has hardly any ammo, is a game where basically you have to play online to accomplish getting anywhere at all and lots of action.

Its mind numbing to think that capcom still doesn't understand why the franchise isn't doing so well.
