TLOU: "By Far The Longest Campaign" Of Any Naughty Dog Game

This past week, we learned that one of the most anticipated titles of 2013 had been delayed.

But although we're mildly disappointed that we have to wait five extra weeks for Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us, we understand that the developers want to produce the best possible adventure.

Even more encouraging is the fact that it's supposedly longer than any game Naughty Dog has produced in the past, which of course includes the acclaimed Uncharted franchise. Creative director Neil Druckmann appeared to confirm this fact:

"In many ways [The Last of Us] Naughty Dog is the most ambitious project is. It is a brand new universe with new characters, groundbreaking technology, a new genre, and by far the longest campaign that Naughty Dog has ever made."

Well, that's certainly good to hear. Personally, I never had any problem with the 10-12-hour Uncharted adventures; they could be completed in less time, of course, but I always wanted to savor those masterpieces. So if I can savor an even longer campaign by being patient - The Last Of Us is now set for June 14 - then I gots no problem with the delay.

As if I need any more reason to buy this game. Easily among my Day 1 Purchases this year. I'm so psyched for this game!

One of the few developers with which I am more than comfortable saying "Take all the time you need."

Now, if it was Square Enix or Team ICO, I'd say "You've had over 5 years!! What's the freakin' hold up!?!?!"

Yeah, it doesn't hurt my feelings that The Last of Us has been delayed.

This just gives me more time to pay all of these games off that are coming out the first 6 months of this year.

Then after I get GTA V in September, I can focus entirely on waiting for the next-gen systems to come out.

Really? Campaign wise, the jak and daxter games can be beat in around 5-6 hours max. Doesn't include the extra, they were referring to campaign only as well.

So what are some of Naughty Dog's longest campaign, and how long were they?

I think since the setting won't be on rails as with Uncharted we will have more crawling about and surviving in areas so that means the campaign can take much longer as you scavenge and handle loot and whatnot.

Guess we didn't play the same game. I swear you could move around in the campaign. Weird

Oh don't be sensitive you know what I mean, where the game takes you to different locations and you fight it out in each of them a la Uncharted as opposed to when you choose to travel and explore at your leisure. I think TLOU might be more inclined to that approach, just a guess though.

last weeks news they said that in the blog post as a excuse to the delay!
not really surprising though, NDs games have always been pretty disappointingly short.
and abrupt, one of my biggest complaints about the series.
hey were FINALLY here, we have traveled half way accross the world, spent oh so much money, almost gotten killed a billion times but its totally worth it because weve made it!
roll credits.
WTF!?
you have spent all that time traveling somewhere, dont we deserve a little time enjoying and exploring it?
its like driving half way across the world, just to get to your destination and drive back.
no staying at a hotel and exploring the destination you have spent so much time driving to, just drive back!

What, did you want 5 levels to see the entire city as some sort of tourist? I think its mighty fine the amount of time we got to gape at the ancient cities in the Uncharted games, cause at that point in the game its less about the city and more about defeating the bad guy. If you take a lot of time to look at the city at that point in the game, it throws the pacing all to hell. I'm quite happy running around the ancient cities defeating the bad guys instead of getting a tour before I beat them.

As far as abrupt endings, they're far better than most games I've played. You get there, you beat the bad guy, you escape, and you have a denouement. Saying Uncharted's endings are abrupt is completely ignoring truly abrupt endings, like Killzone 3, Battlefield 3, or hell, any shooter of the past several years really.

of course not 5 levels, just a few levels to learn a little history on the area and on its inhabitants thats all.
as for the abrupt endings, right so 100 games do it and that suddenly makes it ok?
whatever, i give up.

This is great news to me. I usually take 25% longer then the average gamer when it comes to completing games so when I hear that TLOU will be ND longest game yet, I am very excited!

They keep reeling me in with stories like this. I have planned on getting the game regardless but had so little fun with the Uncharted games that I was/kinda am still worried about this one. However I know they can put together games at a level that most developers only dream of, so I am hoping this one has more of the things I like about games than the Uncharted ones. Whether or not you can see it I am still optimistic about this game.
