Developer To Change "Bros Before Hos" Trophy In Ascension

Adam Sessler was none too happy about it, and that helped spark a major backlash.

God of War: Ascension developer Sony Santa Monica has confirmed with Joystiq that one of the game's controversial Trophies, "Bros Before Hos," will be altered in an upcoming patch. The change only involves one letter but the result is far less inflammatory and certainly not controversial- "Bros Before Foes."

The studio gave GameSpot a statement concerning this change, which reads as follows:

"We have created and will soon push out a patch for God of War: Ascension that alters the title of one of the game Trophies. The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game.

We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we've addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question."

The Trophy is awarded when you defeat Fury, one of the game's female enemies. Of course, when Kratos beats her, he does so in typically brutal fashion (this is God of War, after all), which means he effectively smashes her face in. Yes, Fury is a twisted demon but she's still female, which is why Sessler and others got up in arms about the name of the Trophy. Did you have a problem with "Bros Before Hos?"

Not at all. If anythings going to be attacked for "Ho's" Rap music should be first. But i guess thats the fate of good Developers. Anything that CAN be used against them will be.

Now I really hate this comment. Why should you have even brought up rap? About 99% of this community hate it when politicians and public figures blame video games for today's woes, and you just tried to deflect hate directed toward the video game industry by turning the attention to Rap instead?

Thats F'd up. If most gamers on here hate when people bash their favorite entertainment medium, don't bring up another subject that millions of people love.

I think he meant that a minority are up on arms about the use of the word Ho on the game yet it gets used frequently in some genres of music and there's no outcry. Bro's before Ho's is a tame use compared to the context of the word when I've heard it on the radio.

I for one never really cared one way or the other about the name of the trophy.

That being said, it doesn't really seem to fit the context of God of War, even considering the very tongue-in-cheek trophy list of the previous titles, seeing as how Kratos has always been a VERY solitary anti-hero.

We do hate it when polies blame games for shootings and such, but that isn't what he is saying.

As others have said, he is pointing out that you would think if people are so offended by the use of the term "ho", that those same people would also complain about the use of the term in rap music.

Personally, I love rap music, but I wish rap music would stop being about sex and drugs, and about real things.

I wonder if the "Bros before hoes" trophy will stay that way if you earn it before downloading the patch.

Either way I think this is stupid. Leave it as-is.

In the grand scheme of things, the name really wasn't that offensive, but Sony SM was dumb for putting it in to begin with. They really should have expected somebody to take issue with it and could have avoided this whole mess with just a little forethought.

preventable? The developers shouldn't be kowtowing to a vocal but incredibly small minority who want everything to be bland and inoffensive.

I saw NOTHING wrong with the trophy name and indeed I am offended that they caved in and changed it.

But you know what, it's ok to be offended. It doesn't really hurt and I don't know anyone who has died from it.

Sessler has and always will be an Xbox fanboy. To me, he was looking for ANY excuse to bash an awesome Sony exclusive. After searching for days to find some sort of weak point to attack, the Bros before Hos was all he could come up with.

Sounds like a conspiracy to me...

It would be interesting to know just how many of the gamers who complained were actually PS3 gamers, and not xbox sheep following the shepard's slanderous ways.

Playstation gamers would of course be used to how women are treated in God of War games, and I don't think they would have been vocal enough to warrant any change from Sony SM.

The problem I have with this is that sessler and I think polygon was involved too, anyways they lied about the trophy. You don't get the trophy for killing her.

Orkos choses to help kratos over his own mom. Thats the literal definition of Broes before hoes. Thats why you get the trophy .

It has nothing to do with the boss battle . Now its going to make SM look bad for changing it. Its going to make feminist look like they can't handled anything mildly offensive especially with all the stuff happening with Anita S. If I ever get this game I wont patch it till I get the trophy .

I think developers should strive to offend to push boundaries. If they want gaming to grow up. But they don't. They want money. That is all.

EDIT: To elaborate some more; no one should EVER cater to the offended. It gives them rights they don't deserve.

So as a female who is offended by the original name of the trophy, I'm now supposed to be OK with people calling me a "minority," "crybaby," etc.??? *This* is the type of attitude that using the term "hos" encourages. It's not about being PC, it's about respect! It's disrespectful, and they could have tried to find the tongue-in-cheek humor in another way. Just because GOW is not intended for children, it doesn't give it free license to offend.

For the record, I've never liked the term or the whole phrase.

Actually I find it funny when people draw thier line in the sand and scream from the mountain tops to stop the pandering/entitlements to others who arent like them. Then when it comes something they feel is needed or theirs they will do the same thing they cried out against. We all do it, it's kinda our thing.

The key thing is to not get offended and if your are, to not use the product or service that offended. Sucks that thats the way it is.

And for the respect thing... I am afraid in todays world there just isnt time for chivalry and being gentlemanly as it gets in the way of business.

I think some people doesn't realize the real meaning of hoe, hoes doesn't stand for ''woman'' but a b*tch, looks like Sessler actually overacted and didn't say there was a legitimate reason why the trophy name actually fit,I'm not gonna spoil much but other person in the game actually chose to help Kratos instead of favor the hoe.

And if the Harpy is like the one it appears in the demo the term hoe really fits her, girls that are offended are probably hoes :p

Like someone described above the trophy is given because Orkos helps kratos instead of his mother, so the term fits properly. I haven't played the game but I heard other people saying this as well so my confusion about why it was called bros before hos in the first place is gone.

Now instead I'm left feeling like Adam Sessler jumped the gun and didn't pay attention to why the trophy was called what it was. On top of that it really doesn't matter what it is called does it? The female furies beat you up, torture you and in general cause Kratos a lot of discomfort. So when he returns the favor it is sexist or something like that?

I just don't get why everyone is so sensitive about things like this, how can a trophy title something that doesn't affect the gameplay make you not enjoy a game?

Further this is probably going to get people like PETA freaking out that you cut open an elephants skull, rip off the wings of "bird like" creature, and dissect the stomach of a "horse"(centaur)

I saw the scene on youtube btw the one where you beat her up, and its not actualy as violent as what he does to most of the other creatures, in fact its quite tame. It is no where near as bad as when he leaves that poor girl to grind in the gears in GoW3. This "ho" deserves it :P

Good, it was in poor taste and should have never been named that in the first place. Sometimes public outcry has it right. Context of the violence in GOW is fine but this just undercuts it and someone obviously got their wires crossed. Nothing to do with PC, it's about respect and just a plain dumb thing to have in a game in the 21st century.

You can say it's just a trophy what's the big fuss but these issues are important, especially in gaming as it is one of the most backward corners in how it treats women in entertainment. Both it's female fans, countless articles wondering if they actually exist or are they "faking it", subtle, not so subtle hostile through lines toward the female gamer and how difficult it is to be within the industry...

If a game offends you don't buy it! If you bought a movie and it was offensive to you would you try an complain so they would change the movie! They don't change movies so why should they change games. This is so silly an Adam sux at God of war that's why he found something to complain about. Hell he said he had to get one of his friends to beat a part in Ascension he couldn't get past..lol! What a sore loser he is!
