Nielsen Survey: PS3 Owners Are Starting To Stream Like Mad
What did you do with your PlayStation 3 in 2012?
According to a recent Nielsen survey, PS3 owners spent a whopping 23% of their overall console time streaming video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus. That's up 10% from 2011.
The participants in the survey were aged 13 and up and it's clear that the PS3 has become a fixture of living room entertainment. It's also notable that 32% of the time spent with the Wii involved streaming services. The Xbox 360 is used most often for online gaming (which is no surprise), as the 360 is least utilized for offline gaming; the Wii leading with the PS3 second. It's always interesting to see such results, especially when you remember that several decades ago, video game consoles did only one thing- play video games.
And it's not a bad thing that they've expanded. They can be entertainment hubs in a great many homes because you don't have to be a gamer to own a game console. It just does so many other things and that will be an even more accurate statement when the next generation rolls around...

So you live in Austrailia? Hey, so does your pizza rock over there? Like, it's extra thick on meat and toppings and our American style pizza is weenie-like in comparison.

Actually our servings of everything are pretty much across the board smaller than in America, pizza's included Temjin has been my experience. I've visited the States and I noticed that.

This poll represents 0.00003% of PS3's sold, don't know the actual number of users but still, ask a few more to make a whole percentage point or don't release the data. I don't stream a damn thing because the services in Canada simply blow ass.

Of course the questions can shape the answers. Questions like "How many hours a week do you use your PS3 to stream video content from an online provider?" might have answers like 1-2, 3-5, 6-9, 10-15, 16+ and 0. Depending on where the '0' answer is placed it may be missed by some people and they will feel obligated to choose one of the other choices. Alternately questions can be phrased so that there is only one reasonable answer despite the face that the underlying question has multiple acceptable answers. You can always skew the results by shaping the questions you ask to the answers you want to get. Though you kind of have to take on trust that a survey like this is not done with the intent of skewing the result.

I use my PS3 as a media server streamer. Set Windows media player 11 to share on my PC and I look at family vacation pics in slide show mode with a sound track. It's actually quite moving if you have the right songs playing. I stream my MP3's through it too. Got it playing through a nice surround sound system. I expect PS4 will be even better in this area.

Not only does it have very few shows/movies interesting to me, but hey that's all subjective, but man I had no idea you had to watch like 7-8 commercial breaks for a single tv episode. Holy c**p! There's no way in hell I'd pay anything for that, and well wouldn't even use it for free so I could just as well cancel the free trial 'cause I'll never use it again...
It only made me realize how much better Netflix is, better content, better quality video and most importantly NO COMMERCIALS!! And I'm not even that big a fan of Netflix, since they don't have a lot of the shows I want to watch...
I've never tried vudu though, how is that one compared to netflix/hulu?
