Bioshock Infinite Suffers From Technical Issues On Consoles?

Bioshock Infinite hits next week and if you're wondering, IGN has the rights to publish an exclusive first review of the hotly anticipated game.

And according to what IGN Editor Ryan McCaffery has already said in the "Review in Progress," it seems Irrational's new effort might be best played on a PC. This is due to a less impressive graphical presentation on consoles, at least from a technical standpoint.

Said McCaffery:

"Let me warn you console players up front- Unlike its jaw-dropping-in-2007 predecessor (I’m not counting BioShock 2 here, as that wasn’t our first trip to Rapture), BioShock Infinite does not have the same technical wow-factor going for it."

He goes on to cite some "muddy and low-resolution textures" along with "noticeable frame-rate dips." He also compares the game to last year's console port of Dishonored, with its similar frame-rate and texture drawbacks. But maybe that's just fine, because I don't recall seeing much of anything wrong with Arkane's console iteration of that award-winning game. As for IGN going first, I don't know why everyone is so surprised; they've routinely broken embargo dates for years. Maybe this is the first time it's officially allowed, though, I don't know.

That's unfortunate and explains the delays. Dishonored barely had anything worth mentioning though, a couple hiccups during scene intros and a bit of flatness to the coloring (as walls in a PC game tend to have).

Too bad to hear Unreal has let them down but graphics aren't everything, I'm in it for the experience and atmosphere so my preorder stands.

Dishonoured played fine. I'm not going to be worried unless many more reviewers cite it as a problem.

I got a feeling this is just a case of the PS3 showing its age, that relatively speaking it looks worse than it did back then compared to the PC version. Nothing more dramatic than that.

But of course. It's the console version of the engine who has become worse with age. Everything else is the same as it was six years ago. It can be the only explanation.
And logic is a weird flower.

I hope it doesn't look as bad as Dishonored's textures. It was the first thing I noticed within the game. I looked around in the boat to the ground and saw textures which I thought at first were just lagging in rendering. I got used to it but it is shame that when up close to anything it just looks bad...

Go back and play the other Bioshocks, they didn't have much wow factor, they did a good job with Unreal 2 but what makes it great is the presentation and lighting, not the overt graphical fidelity.

Yeah I agree. It was the fantastic atmosphere and artwork that impressed me back then - not the graphics in itself.

But this time around, since it's outdoors, maybe they've encountered some additional challenges with the increased drawing distances and sheer space. But most of all I think it's just a case of IGNs reviewer noticing the gap between console and PC gaming right now.

I don't care, you are not going to play this game, this special game named Bioshock Infinite for graphics alone. This will be an experience and an overload of all senses. Next Tuesday will mark a great day in gaming. As the makers of the juggernaut System Shock 2 once again grace us with their pristine art form that is Bioshock Infinite. This masterpiece will be enjoyed by millions upon millions as Booker and Elizabeth weave a breath taking opera of emotion and game play. No one, NO ONE will be the same after successfully completing this life changing colossus. Just know you are lucky that you own the means to open it's god ray electronic pages as this delicate ambrosia media welcomes you into it's bosom. I.......for one......almost don't feel worthy of such a gift...

Am I the only person that didn't like Dishonored that much? I mean, it's a decent game, but I don't understand the big fuss over it. I still haven't beaten it as the story doesn't even interest me. I've done the whole stealth thing a million times in other games as well. It felt like playing Skyrim in the future with a ton of restrictions as to what you can do and where you can go. I would've given that game an 8 at the very best. Was getting it for 360 my mistake? Does it even look that much better on PS3 or what? Hell, as many trailers as Bethesda released for such a short game, I felt like I had already played it by the time I bought it. This concludes my Dishonored rant. Again, it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either IMO.

I read plenty of reviews that commented on the games length. 15 to 20 hrs seems pretty short IMO.

Just to be clear the fella at ign is playing the xbox version of the game, and specifically states he has not played the pc or ps3 versions! Not to mention bioshock has always run better on the ps3 then the xbox.

To be fair though, it came out a year after the 360 version and they'd had the extra time to tweak it and correct some things. These might have been things that they had wanted to do before the initial ship date, but they weren't urgent enough to push the date back.

I second The Real Deal's viewpoint on this.

The fact that McCaffery is likely playing the game on a 360, since that is his preferred console means that we can't be sure what the PS3 version will be like.

Until I see something concrete about technical differences on the PS3 by name, I'll just pretend that his comments thus far don't even exist.
