So, Who's Keeping Their PS3?

The PlayStation 4 won't offer backwards compatibility, even though Sony said it was a "tough decision" to ditch the popular feature.

You'll be able to utilize the new Gaikai cloud service to gain access to old PlayStation games, but the machine itself won't be able to play discs from past consoles. That means there's going to be a lot of games in your library you won't be able to play. Many find this to be, at the very least, discouraging.

So when you get the PS4, do you plan to keep your PS3? Or maybe the more accurate question is, do you intend to keep your PS3 hooked up? Me, I only see the PS4 as offering more of the same gameplay experiences, only with better overall performance, so the PS4 will replace the PS3 in my entertainment center. I've explained in the past why I can't see going back to play PS3 games, and why I'm much more likely to return to PS1 and PS2 titles. That's because there are gameplay styles and mechanics that have died out (such as turn-based RPGs) that I can't really find on the newer consoles. This is why my PS2 (which can play PS1 games, remember?) will remain hooked up right next to my PS4.

I just can't see much reason to keep the PS3 running. Why would I play Uncharted 3 when Uncharted 4 is out on the PS4? Why would I play Gran Turismo 5 when I could be playing Gran Turismo 6? The only thing that might dissuade me is future must-have PS3 exclusives, provided Sony has some in store after the PS4 releases. Don't forget that last generation, God of War II released on the PS2 several months after the PS3 was on store shelves. So what about you? What's your plan for your PS3?

I'll keep my PS3 hooked up until I get through my backlog. Once that happens, then I will probably retire it. After a few PS4 games, I will probably lose all desire to go back to playing the PS3.

Just like with the PS2 and the PS1 before it. And like those previous consoles, it will hold a special place in my heart.

When there's so many games left to play on the PS3, I'd say it'll remain my main console for the next 3-4 years.
Then I'll get a PS4.

I'm going to need a bigger shelf to keep my PS1 (some memory cards aren't readable on PS2 :P), 2, and 3 along with the PS4 hooked up.. without having a fire hazard.

Ben, you and I think alike. I typically dont go back to older games (or systems) when a newer one is out. I love Uncharted 3 but when Uncharted 4 comes out on PS4 it will be just a memory. Although I may play Uncharted: DF ;). Anyways I like to savor games to the point I have no reason to go back to them. But this time ill be keeping my PS3 just in case. As I said earlier today getting rid of my PS2 was a huge mistake.

My PS3 ain't going no where. There's so many titles of 'timeless' value on it now. Games that may never see a PS4 re-release. I imagine the PS3 won't go away anytime soon either. This thing, I have no doubt, will stay on the market for a solid 10 years after PS4.

My PS3 will likely end up being sold. I still have my PS1 and PS2 but every single time I hook either of them up, I disconnect them within 10-15 minutes and put them away for another 6-12 months. The only consoles I wish I still had are the NES and SNES, but RetroN 5 will be solving that problem for me shortly.

While I usually keep my older consoles hooked up, unless a newer model has BC, this time around I'm going to put the PS3 away most likely for good. IMO it's been a horrible gen for games, and my PS3 library shows it.

Of course this is assuming I'm ever going to pick up a PS4, time will tell on that one.

This gen brought about lazy dev work by many of them, not to mention most of the great franchises being ruined because they were trying to get a piece of the CoD pie. Ah well, to each their own.

I'll probably sell the majority of my games off and only keep the ones I consider *gems*. I am done with this gen and moved to PC for now. (with only a few exclusive exceptions!) Bought all the recent games on my computer and hooked it to my TV playing the games with a PS3 controller! haha. I like to purchase the best version of games and until next winter that will be on PC :P

I will be getting the PS4 day one and return to consoles at that point! Can't wait!

I will definitely be keeping my PS3, and it will probably be hooked up until I finish my backlog. There are a good number of launch games coming out for the PS4, but definitely not enough to keep me as busy as the PS3.

I sold my PS1 to get a PS2, and then traded my PS2 for my PS3 since I got the 60gb fatty (that runs to this day). I still have every SEGA console I've owned, but I wish I still had the old Playstation consoles and my N64. I pawned that for a guitar.

nope.
theres far too few ps3 games ill ever want to go back to, so whats the point?
not to mention EB always for some reason triple the trade in value upon a systems replacement, which kinda makes it hard to say no.
i remember saying no ill never sell my ps2, then EB announced the trade in values towards the 60GB ps3 and well that was that.
not to mention the ps3s woeful reliability!
keeping it now, after having it for quite a while is quite a financial risk.
might as well get rid of it now when its actually worth something!

I've still got my 60GB baby which I've reflowed twice and just had it reballed to keep it going, me and my friends do still play PS1 and PS2 games quite often so I would hate to lose that feature as I sold my PS2 years back! As others have said I've always regretted selling my consoles so I'll try and keep my PS3 for as long as possible!

I'll be trading in my PS3 towards a PS4 - it will help offset the initial cost of the system. Only game I have coming for PS3 is Last of Us - other than that, and finishing Journey, the only game I play consistently on the PS3 is BC2...

No brainer here. I have all my Playstations either in storage or connected to the glare screen. PS3 stays out until I get tired of the games I have and they stop producing new ones for it that are worth playing.

Well it stays out longer if I do not pick up the PS4 right away. That goes without saying.

Keep Playing!

For me, backward capability on the PS4 is not an issue. I already guessed that b/c was a “no go” just looking at the PS3’s history. Combine that with the PS4 having a new architecture and it is not hard to see the righting all over the walls. Between my PS3 game collection, Netflix, and a great Blue Ray player, I will keep my PS3 (fatty) for a very long time.

I'll definitely trim down the catalogue a bit, as I bought and played plenty of games this generation that I don't anticipate ever wanting to play again. But there are enough great games that really struck a chord with me that I couldn't possibly part with, so the system stays. I just don't have room to keep everything hooked up at once, but I'd rather have it in a box in the closet than not at all.

I have kept EVERY system I have ever bought, and my older brother has all the systems bought for the family going back to the Atari 2600. I will probably keep my system hooked up until I clear up some of the back log I have on PS3 games, or at least until I get a good library of PS4 games.

Systems I own: N64, Sega Saturn, Playstation(the ORIGINAL, not PS1 or PSone or what ever other version came along...) PS2(Original launch model), and PS3(60Gig Phatty).

Older systems owned by older brother: Atari 2600, Sega Masters System, Sega Genesis/32X/CD, SNES, and the NES.

When last checked back in '08 all systems still worked too.

Anyone else find it funny that the Wii U is considered an Eighth Gen (same gen as PS4 and Xbox720) console considering it's barely more powerful than the PS3 or 360 and Nintendo is just now getting into HD gaming?

Honestly I don't forsee myself buying the PS4 for some time because I don't want to spend the money on something I would rarely play. I still play my PS3 a TON and I play all of my PS2 and PS1 games on it. That being said, if it comes a time for me to buy the PS4 my PS3 will be next to it to have easy access to play and so will my Dreamcast.

I didn't think hardcore gamers had backlogs anyway...however I am not a hardcore gamer so I am just guessing.
