Duke Nukem Forever Among The Worst Games Of 2012 In Japan

Oh, we so need to have our own "Sh** Game of the Year."

That is the literal translation of the Japanese Wikipedia page, "Kusoge of the Year," which has named four titles that are in the running from 2012. According to Kotaku, one of them is the much-maligned Duke Nukem Forever. No big shock.

In order to qualify for this particular competition, games must have released between January 1 and December 31, and the titles are chosen by compiling user reviews in a dedicated thread. They're not going by critics here. And by the way, indie games aren't eligible for some reason...maybe because there are enough of them to tilt the crap meter. Sure, there are some great ones but let's face it, low budgets and amateur teams can lead to garbage quite often.

So anyway, in addition to DNF, there's Heavy Fire: Afghanistan, Toki Towa, and Pacific Storm: Battleship Yamato. Even all you JRPG lovers might have a problem with Toki Towa, which apparently features terrible graphics and animation, horrid gameplay balance, bad dialogue, and one piece of DLC that offers an extra CG sequence for $5.00. Yeah, that probably qualifies as "sh**." But DNF should win due to sheer disappointment level.

Sad to hear that about Toki Towa I was looking forward to that one. The DLC campaign for DNF is actually pretty good provided you can roll back most of the evolutions your mind has undergone since the Nintendo 64.

I thought Toki Towa is a bit weird but never knew it'd be a crap game.

Some IGN blogger who's currently in Japan got to play Toki to Towa and he confirmed exactly what was said above. It's a shame because I thought the game was promising. Oh well. At least the Japanese people are not excluding a JRPG from that list if it really deserves to be there.

PS: I really had to laugh at the "award" title, Kusoge. Kuso = Shit. Ge = Game (shortened form of "gemu"). Haha!

Yeah I was just being a smart-ass. :)
When a jrpg receive bad press here in the west we usually find jrpg fans starting to blame the press rather than the game. So I just spun on that.

For good reason.

It really does amaze me that people were taking DNF as a serious game, especially when the previous games went out of their way to make fun of themselves and anything else possible. The ONLY way a Duke game should be taken is w/ tongue in cheek, just like the designers designed it to be taken...

Anyways, though the game was NOT great by anymeans it was good. It set out to be a "B" style game(instead of movie) and that, IMO, is exactly what it accomplished, much like "Snakes on the Plane", and MANY people ripped that movie even though most people realised it was meant to be campy.

As for a "Sh*t Game of the Year" here in the west, hard to say, there are oh so many many games I never got a chance to play...
