EA: Crysis 3, Dead Space 3 Fall Shy Of Sales Expectations

Yeah, well, that's what happens when you disappoint fans of established franchises.

While Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3 were good games, many followers of each series believed the new installments fell shy of all the hype and anticipation. Many said they took more of an action-y route that clashed with previous gameplay styles, and we agreed.

Now, according to an Electronic Arts post-earnings call, the publisher has revealed that Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3 fell short of expectations. They didn't provide us with specific sales data but it's clear that both games under-performed, despite doing relatively well on the sales charts. Crytek founder Cevat Yerli called Crysis 3 the studio's "masterpiece" but as far as we're concerned, that might be true if we considered the graphics only.

One of these days, developers and publishers will learn that not everyone wants faster and dumber.

Fashion Space 3 was alright as a one time adventure with a good friend. Not any friend, a good one. That way you can share laughs at the bad story and everything else. Dead space 2 was better, and then dead space was better than both. Don't care for crysis. Played the second one on my pc and didn't understand what was good about it.

Glad I wasn't the only one who didn't understand what all the hype was about. Tried to get into the first one on the PS3, didn't happen. Tried the second one at a friend's house, was not impressed. Takes more than graphics to make a good game.

I thought Crysis 2 was *awesome*, both single player an multiplayer. In fact it's probably the best shooter I've played on the PS3.

The first one were much more generic with the much over-used tropical island theme. The third is "more of the same" and that's what made it less impressive, relatively speaking.
But Crysis 2? Man what a shooter.

Cancel both of those franchises, they've come to an end. I loved Dead Space but nah, it got effed up as soon as EA saw that Visceral had something great.

We'll see what EA will have to say about FUSE.

I tried the demo. It's quality stuff by an experienced dev. But it comes off feeling so overdone in a generation that has done a whole lot of shooter and multiplayer this gen. I can't blame Insomniac I guess. They've always done shooters. It's all they seem to really know.

Yeah, just got done playing the Fuse demo and I wasn't impressed at all. I will be skipping Fuse.

I liked it. I just don't think it's hitting any empty spots for me.

I will say I do miss Insomniac as a PS3 exclusive dev already. I can tell this engine they've got slows down in ways it probably wouldn't if it were only for PS3.

I wonder if it was EA's influence that changed the look and direction of FUSE.

The E3 trailer from 2011 I saw looked funny and awesome! Then they changed it to a generic, serious, brown and grey war shooter.

Anyone wanna offer their review of the demo? Is it worth checking out? Is it worth the download?

That Avatar is one of the greatest scenes in gaming!!

And ironically Fuse would probably do better as an exclusive, as it is there's no reason to be excited about it.

Dancemachine, I am almost certain the look changed because of EA. There is just no reason for a Dev to have one ambitious idea and then pull a 180 when they start working for a publisher.

Same crap happened with Simcity, Mass effect, Dead Space and to a degree SSX.

Despite the nonsense PR that the devs say they have freedom or whatever I am not going to believe that one bit. Not when the Devs at maxis lied about several things. Not when Mass effects direction went in a boo ya micheal bay explosion direction for number 2 and 3.

Anyway yea I played the demo too, and wasn't impressed. Just another co op shooter. I would rather play the co op in R2 than this game to be honest.

Does anyone miss the last gen of gaming where everything just seemed more expressive and less concerned about mass marketing logic? Where if something seemed like a cool idea it was made without worry of it being multiplayer friendly enough, or shooter-military appealing enough. Now everything to me seems to have this target demographic vibe, as if these carefully market analyzed projects are being manufactured out of production facility and fed to mindless consumers like cattle.
hehe maybe I was just more ignorant back then about the marketing politics behind games but these days it just seems annoying more than ever.

No temjin, it has definitely changed man. People did just make games that they thought would be cool without worrying too much about who it would appeal too, and how many sales they would get.

I don't think it was that you were ignorant because look at all of the unique games we got on the PSX and even the PS2.

For example Ape Escape. That game or something like it would never be made today because it is too zany and wouldnt sell enough copies. Yet it was one of the best platformers on the PSX and is still one of my top 3D platformers ever.

We just had more types of games, and more genres being explored it seems. Now the majority of things fall into the action catergory. Every genre is trying to have a more action based feel to it, even if it isn't needed or wanted by the fans.

Its sad really, only indie devs can save us :P

Dead Space 3 was pretty awesome. Not sure I liked it more than the first just for nostalgia's sake, but it was definitely more enjoyable than 2. Sorry to see this franchise not succeed, but maybe that will give Visceral a chance to do something new. Rather have that than another sequel.

Not surprising. Let's hope that devs use the new generation for more original gaming experiences. We don't want bigger, faster, more of the same, especially generic shooters. We want evolution.
There's still hope for Dead Space, if they go back to their roots.

good.
hopefully this will teach crytek not to rush out a game that is so big and clearly needed more time!
and hopefully this will teach visceral not to turn a horror franchise into yesterdays mindless third person shooter!
hopefully it also means visceral will give dead space a break and return to dantes inferno.
so needs a sequel!

Not a surprise. I wonder when the monkeys crunching numbers over at EA will figure out that trying to distill every game into a generic action shooter hybrid isn't enough to make it sell like CoD.

Fuse will end up like The Syndicate. A co op game that is probably fun with friends but ultimately a very generic derivative experience.

I think the best way to put it is that if you try to make everyone happy, you aren't going to make anyone happy. I don't know why the company couldn't understand that what made the games great in the first place was exactly what they were toning down.
