Big Final Fantasy Talent Working On New RPG, Fairy Fencer F

Let's just hope it ends up coming to North America.

Hyperdimension Neptunia developer Compile Heart has announced that its spin-off company, Galapagos RPG, will be producing a brand new role-playing game, which will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3. It's called Fairy Fencer F.

Famitsu says the project will boast feature concept art by Yoshitaka Amano and music by Nobuo Uematsu and his band, the Earthbound Papas. All you hardcore Final Fantasy aficionados should recognize both those names; they once worked on the legendary franchise. Amano's art and Uematsu's music have been widely revered, which is why we're automatically excited about this new game. Those guys are just plain awesome.

It seems the setting is a fictional reality here on Earth, where warriors are called Fencers who protect the world with weapons known as Furies. The protagonist is a boy named Fang who accidentally becomes a Fencer after saving a female Fencer, who's named Tiara. We're not sure about the gameplay just yet, but you can probably expect a blend of real-time action, turn-based aspects, and strategy elements.

Fairy Fencer F is scheduled to launch later this year in Japan.

Eeeeek! That one picture tells me this game is for me. As I said in the Time and Eternity preview HyperNep Victory came out just about perfect and this sounds even better because it looks like it might have a more traditional epic style of JRPG-ing.

Story sounds very Japanese anime and kind of like Eureka 7 only without giant robots. Great reasong to hang onto the PS3 for when it comes stateside. If it doesn't come stateside I will personally spearhead a campaign to get it here.

Earthbound Papas?
I thought Uematsu's band is called Black Mages.
Change of name or band?

It's not going to look anything like the image on the website is it. Every JRPG nowadays seems to be using that cutesy anime style which I quite frankly find unapproachable. I don't mean in saying they all have to look super realistic, Final Fantasy IX's character models were disproportionate and light hearted on purpose and I admire that game to no end. It would just be a shame to see Amano's talent to be scrubbed over with boggly eyed children.

The title also sounds really obscure, almost like them tales games which are equally unapproachable despite the good reviews I hear. Just looking at the preview of Time And Eternity I feel exactly the same. Take Ni No Kuni for example, they backed up the game with Studio Ghibili's art direction which was very distinctive. While this, Time And Eternity, Tales or whatever it may be, all have that generic anime look which I am just getting tired of seeing in every JRPG's - it's no wonder the genre is so obscure to the masses these days.

Sounds great! I just hope they come up with another name for it if it comes stateside as the name is really bad.
