So Far, The Last Of Us Has Tallied Three Perfect Review Scores

You know, if it was any studio other than Naughty Dog, we'd be surprised.

But when you've already created what is arguably the greatest franchise of the current generation in Uncharted, you almost start to expect next-level sh** from those guys.

So far, we've seen three review scores for The Last Of Us and all three have been perfect. The first was a 5/5 from Empire, who said the game was not only Naughty Dog's defining title, but also "an easy contender for the best game of the generation." Then came OPM's 10/10, where the new IP was lauded as a "work of art." And today, we get another 10/10 from Edge, which means Naughty Dog's latest is only the 15th title in Edge's history to receive a perfect score. And as the embargo for reviews is actually up tomorrow, you're going to start seeing lots more scores hit the Internet late tonight. And those scores will be high.

Our review is coming, too. Played about three hours so far...have to say that it's...um...pretty darn good.

You know it's coming everyone. Some attention seeking website will trash this game all under the guise of spreading the truth.

Doesn't it always. For more hits, then the page gets bombarded with views, and as always those reviews are crap and have no merit. My brother is playing it :\ Wish I was!

I actually wonder. Usually that comes from edge.

No, it usually comes from Destructoid. Remember, they gave Heavy Rain a 4.

...geniuses.

But what would a site gain from seeking attention that way? Surely not new readers - noone respects any site that strays too far off the metascore anyways - regardless if it's an overly positive or negative rating.

If I were an editor of a website I'd shy way from that ever happening. Still, there are reviewers who - for whatever reason - don't see the excellence others find, or the other way around, see past the flaws (or are thinking too hard about the fact that this very title is the main sponsor of the site at that point in time).
But rate something low just to gain attention? Why, if it damages your sites reputation?

Beamboom: Destructoid does it to get attention. If a game scores really high and just about every source is giving it a 9+, they like nothing more than to give out a 6 or a 7 so their review can top N4G or something like that.

It has been an agenda for years, unfortunately. Things may change now that they're plenty big enough, but that's part of the way they GOT big. That, and acting like hostile douchebags in general, because sadly, people love that kind of sh**.

Hey Beanboom:

If you want an answer to this...
"But what would a site gain from seeking attention that way?"

... just scroll on down the page. KidPresentable is clearly the target demographic, as someone who expresses enjoyment when fans of a game he doesn't like are unhappy. I don't get it myself, but hey, I guess if your goal is to drive traffic, seems like there's an audience.

@Comic: I don't see anything wrong with KidPresetables posts. I too can find amusement in fans getting their panties in a knot. He just had the nerve of touching the holy cow around here, Uncharted. That's a noob error that anyone can make.

I think you need to read his comments again, Comic. He doesn't care about reading reviews, and explains well why. I respect that.

A perfect review from Edge? Then there is no doubt the game is incredible. I mean they give great games a 7 usually.

While I've been turned off by the horror stuff and brutal appeal from this game these scores are really something else, especially from Edge. They have a record for writing the contrary for popular PS exclusives.

It looks like Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us are sure fire all round goty nominees. There's no question there.

Edge has a reputation for being harsh and hard to please. Some people have also accused Edge of being biased toward the Xbox 360 and not without reason.

So Edge giving a game a perfect score, especially a PS3 exclusive, is definitely significant.

I don't follow reviews, so the only enjoyment I'm going to get is going to whatever site gives the game an 8.5 and read the crying and damage control in the comments section from the Naughty Dog fans. I remember a little while ago, my daughter and I were in Target buying a game for her PS3. She asked me if she should buy Uncharted 3 and I told her I found the game a bit boring. Some psycho came from the next aisle over to disagree with me.

Last of Us looks good but it had those tell tale signs that I didn't like about UC3. Namely, stretches of time where I'mforced to walk a linear path while characters converse. Some people think that's superb gameplay but I personally find it excruciating. I have high hopes that the demo is not indicative of the entire game. An entire game of pilfering shelves and closets, just to reach the next encounter is not my idea of epic. I'm going that later we get more interesting and unique gameplay.

It's ok if you don't like The Last of Us or Uncharted. There is no law that says you have to. To each his own I guess.

Naughty Dog is just a stellar story teller. Thankfully I am on the other side of the fence and feel the Uncharted series and soon The Last of Us are among the best this gen. I can't imagine hating this type of game, story telling and character creation/interaction.

Question for you, what games do you thoroughly enjoy? Just curious.

You can't handle a pacing moment in a game where they are focusing on story and character development between the action? Sorry but the guy in the other aisle wasn't the crazy one.

@ Ben
I don't have a problem with reviews because I understand the service the provide. I just don't need them. I'm old school and I still have that mentality of buying whatever I think will be enjoyable. I've never bought a game I hated because I can find enjoyment even with glaring faults. I honestly wish more gamers would step of the beaten path and not just follow the games that get 9 or 10.

@ World
I like moments of calm and levity. But Uncharted 3 had a pretty weak story which kind of centered around the theme of the first game: is treasure, game, and glittery worth giving everything? When he found Drake's body in the first game, he realized it wasn't worth it. So they pretty much told the same story. Couple that with he and Elena being apart AGAIN, Sully now having undying devotion to Drake even though he left him at the beginning of Among Thieves, and arguing about cell phone plans, I found the whole story to be pretty worthless. Gameplay wise the game had a hundred shootouts that pretty much boiled down to charging guys with shotgun, guys who stayed mid range with assault rifles, and long range guys with snipers or rocket launchers, the game seemed to stay in one gear the entire time. That being said, I hope I get emotionally invested in The Last of Us and I hope that it is a very enjoyable experience.

@Duke
Heavy Rain, Super Mario Galaxy 2, with Red Dead Redemption and Bayonetta tired for third. Could change tomorrow since there are so many amazing games this gen but this is it today.

It took the water stuff for me to appreciate Uncharted 3 more than I otherwise would have. I too felt a bit underwhelmed by it up until I got to some fresh feeling game play elements. Sure enough by the end of it all I was quite pleased. I still think Uncharted 2 had a much more pronounced 'wow' effect. It had that unprecedented, rather than expected, leap that really sticks with you longer. I tend to find that after a series reaches a certain plateau in design, even with superior functionality, makes less of an impression and feels less remarkable because of how familiar it all feels.

That's why its best to stay in here and get an honest review. And not a review to create public attention or even these so called professional reviews. Just an opinion on whether he likes the game or not as if a friend was telling you what he thinks about the game he just finished. And also very well written.

I have to admit that I didn't like Uncharted 3 nearly as much as I did the first or the second. It got a little silly with some of the enemy situations it threw you in and I didn't think the story was nearly as strong. I only played through it twice... In other words, I have no worries about The Last of Us

I was never sure about this game, since I haven't seen much about it, just some screenshots. Uncharted really isn't my thing. Then I watched a Youtube video of the demo. (God of War isn't my thin either.) Now I pre-ordered it and am getting it next week.

I'm so torn! I've been hyped for this game since I saw the first trailer and was ready for a day one purchase, but since hearing there will be SP DLC I'm now thinking of waiting for the "game of the year edition". It'll be a long wait and I do feel great publishers like Naughty Dog deserve support for their games, but I hate forking out of so much extra cash to finish the entire experience of a game these days. I know I obviously don't have to buy the DLC, but I guess being an old school gamer I wish extras could be unlocked in other ways than through my credit card. Still, can't wait to get my hands on this game....even if I do end up waiting. Congrats to Naughty Dog on another masterpiece!

Pre ordered my survival edition. Can't wait. I've been so paranoid about accidentally reading the ending on comment sections. I will probably look at the scores and the good, bad, ugly remarks, but other than that I'm keeping this gem as fresh as possible. In the mean time Uncharted 3 on crushing is... crushing.

dam it, thanks your really making the 9 days wait till this releases so much easier!
:(
shocked it got a 10 from edge though, there normally pretty hard markers.
part of me wonders though is it getting 10s because its that good, or is it getting 10s because its actually something that dares to be so different!
look at remember me, a truly flawed game in SO many ways, but how many 9s has it pulled in?
as much as id like to say it, theres no way in hell its worth a 9!

im starting to get worried this is suffering from ME3 syndrome.
there was SO much hype behind that game, everyone was convinced, no brainwashed, into believing it would be flat out perfect, it was more likely to wake up the next morning and find yourself on mars than ME3 turning out to be a disappointment.
and what happened?
exactly.
