The Last Of Us: 24 Perfect Scores So Far, And A New Trailer

The best game of the generation? The best game ever? Possibly.

Well, that remains to be seen but in the meantime, Sony has released a new live action trailer for Naughty Dog's latest masterpiece, The Last Of Us. It's below and it's pretty damn cool.

In addition, as the embargo for reviews lifted this morning, the reviews have already started pouring in. According to Metacritic, there are already 24 perfect scores (yes, 24) and hey, it's still early. The game holds an overall score of 95; it's down a little due to a few outliers, such as GameSpot's 8.0 score. But that's statistics for ya, right?

For the record, though, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which is arguably the best game of the generation, has 39 perfect scores at Metacritic, with an overall average of 96. I'm not sure TLoU can top that but who knows? As I said, it's still early; it has only been a few hours since embargo lifted and of many more reviews are yet to come. You'll see ours later tonight, hopefully.

Not my style of game, but I'm overjoyed that it's totally living up to the hype. The Playstation 3 deserves to go out with a bang.

Yea, I kind of read gamespots review of the game and it seemed really positive. Then an 8.0 popped up at the end. I've read other reviews and none have the same negatives that their reviewer had with the game.

I hate to say this, but he just didn't get it. And it is possible that some people will completely miss the point of a game like The Last Of Us.

I was hoping it wouldn't be a professional critic but it's still understandable.

Good point Ben, maybe it's not for hits but that the reviewer just didn't understand the game's message.

Yeah, GameSpot doesn't care about hits. I mean, every site cares about traffic, but I seriously doubt GameSpot has to resort to such low-brow review tactics for the sake of traffic.

I think Metacritic and GameRankings should eliminate the top and bottom two scores on each game (granted that there are enough reviews to do so). I think this would eliminate the ill effects of those reviews that may or may not be just a pathetic attempt to get hits or display biases...

I don't believe that the Gamespot review is a problem. If you're Naughty Dog and the lowest score that you're seeing is an 8, then you have to be feeling pretty good; the average is what matters and the average is one of the highest seen this year.

websites like metacritic have a lot more problems with that. The concept is great but no website has done it right yet and their total/average score is pretty much useless.

I wonder what relatively new website A Quarter to Three will give the game. They're building a reputation of giving out very low scores to AAA games. I discredited them anyway. Bit wondering just for kicks

Tom Chick is a big ass douche. He is one of the worst reviewers and bases all his crap on bias! I remember his crap all stars review. He mention smash bros over fifteen times and complained that it was too technical for new players. Duh! The game is trying to be a fighter unlike smash. Anyways, the less I hear about that pompous jackass the better.

Keep in mind they gave Remember Me a 7. So by their standards, Last of Us is just a tick better than Remember Me.

Yeah. Right.

Tom Chick. That's his name. Couldn't remember. He definitely seems to score games just for traffic. He gave 2/5 for Journey, 1/5 for Halo 4 and 3/5 for Bioshock Infinite. He also low balled Deus Ex as well. I don't even bother with that site.

I know it's truly an amazing day for Playstation Nation. So funny to see the sites giving The Last of Us 7.5 and 8 to get hits. Polygon sounded like they gave a 7.5 because it was to hard or dark?!!!!! That site lost all credibility. I understand reviews are just opinions but with what they say any other game would have gotten a 9/9.5 with these minor gripes. They score it way to low to get hits. Cannot wait to play the greatest game released this gen if not ever.

Sadly, a game like The Last Of Us or any other hyped up game is going to get some lower scores simply for that reason. It's Christmas for them. Even John "TotalBiscuit" Bain does it. Just the nature of the Internet. I'm sure Tom Chick is ready to give this a 4 like he did for Uncharted 3.

Too hard? Some parts can be a little frustrating, but I think we're all used to much easier games.

As for too dark, if they mean literally and not figuratively, I can sort of understand that, too. But not to the extent where I'd say it affects the enjoyment.

I think they were talking about the brutality of the game and it's tone as being to dark. A post apocalyptic setting needs emulate Oz The Great and Powerful!! :)

I am so extremely pleased that this game has the chance to just shock me with brutality! I want to experience The Last of Us with every sense of my being. I am going into The Last of Us as if it were a Demon's Soul game. I will beat this game on the hardest available difficulty from the very start. The Last of Us, after I destroy it thoroughly will be a forever resident in my DNA!!!! My body is ready!

I glanced through several of the lower reviews. Most of them seems to mention how they hated that its was like a movie. They talked about how there is no real players choice, that everything that happened in the game was predetermined.

Despise that viewpoint. It's a story. A linear story that you can't mess with because the writers have it the way they want.

It just so happens to be the way with many of the best games of the generation, by the way. MGS4, God of War III, the Bioshocks, and oh yes, the Uncharteds. You're not allowed to chastise The Last Of Us for not having any freedom if you didn't do the exact same thing with an Uncharted review.

I'm really sick of this, "if I can't do whatever I want, the game sucks" mentality. That's an ADD-riddled generation filled with twitch-gamers who can't sit still long enough to follow a story. Period.

It's not a question of "if I can't do whatever I want, the game sucks", Ben. It's not either/or. Man you are polarized at times.

I've not read the mentioned reviews but I can put money on that what they miss is just a *bit* more of a feeling that what you do matter in one way or another. And I can relate to that! No-one in their right mind wants Naughty Dogs adventures to become sandbox games. What *some* of us - also amongst the reviewers - would love, is however just to be given a little more elbow room. Just to let us feel we participate in the story - the predefined, linear story - just a pinch, a hint of your presence to actually matter.

Just that. Not "whatever we want".

Beamboom, you're really the only one who's polarized. You just can't seem to handle anything that's entirely linear. And you also can't seem to understand that in order to tell a great story, it HAS to be linear. I'm fine with having both types of games; I've made that abundantly clear many times.

In no way will giving you the option to go right or left make anyone feel more "part" of the adventure. All it's going to do is begin to detract from the narrative because the instant we have choice, it becomes about US and what WE want, not about the story that was written.

No. Not in The Last Of Us. I know you earnestly believe that every single game can only be better with even a little choice and freedom, but I've tried to explain to you why that is counterproductive in SOME instances. If anyone complains about a lack of any sort of choice in TLoU, they don't get this.

No, Ben.
Read your comment again. You talk about them wanting to "doing WHATEVER they want". Noone talks about that.
If we draw a scale from not being able to do ANYTHING on one side (in effect: A plain old movie) and being able to do WHATEVER on the other side (something like Skyrim) there is an enormous *world* to be found between those two poles, still you firmly place us all on one of the extremes.

There's already player choices to be found in *all* games today, including Uncharted and TLoU. Like the crafting and tweaking of items in TLoU. That's player choices. Or scavenging: You decide where to look - or bother looking at all. How you prepare before a fight. Or merely the fact that you decide what tempo you advance. I assume you can hide behind a table for an hour in TLoU, if you like? That's "player freedom" right there. You decide how long you're hiding, and thus decide the pacing of that story segment.

So every game today are found somewhere on this fine-grained scale *between* full freedom and no freedom. You talk like there is no middle ground. Like if someone suggest less restrictions they must automatically just want "to do whatever they want". And *that* is what's so polarized.

After reading some of the tidbits on metacritic it seems the biggest complaint for those who didn't score it above a 9 was that it didn't completely recreate the way to play a video game.

Yeah naughty dog how dare you make an adventure game that uses an element someone has seen before? Funny how no one mentioned this with the last 12 Cods that were exactly the same.

Only 50 ratings in, it could manage overtake the plumber who's sitting supreme atop this generation with 42 perfect scores and a 97 overall average, but probably not.

That 7.5 from Polygon. Already 400 comments from people who haven't even played the game, crying about Remember Me and Animal Crossing getting rated higher. lol.

I'm glad that The Last of Us is getting such high marks. I'm sure that the team at ND put their heart, soul, and everything into crafting this game. They are one of this industry's finest and the accolades AND sales should be rewarded.

I expected it to do well, maybe not this well though. I question if it is really that good, I know Naughty Dog are often releasing Groundbreaking titles but I just don't feel such enthusiasm for this title. It's interesting that you mentioned 'The Road' in your previous article because for me the film version of that and Fallout 3 were kind of the limit for me when it comes to post apocalypitic settings in stories. We've just had a flood of titles since baring the same themes and settings which I have just found to become rather stale. I know ND will have made a terrific game in The Last of Us but for now it is just not of my interest. I'm sure I will get around to it sooner or later mind you.

I'm actually a little worried for Naughty Dog. After setting the bar so high, again, it's going to be hard to surpass your own masterpiece in the future LOL. Not saying, it's impossible (and I have full confidence in them), but after so many great games, I wonder how long they can keep up the top notch quality.
