GTAV Gameplay Arrives, And We Can Barely Contain Ourselves

We've seen several trailers for Grand Theft Auto V, but none has really given us a close look at the gameplay.

That's why today is so darn special. Rockstar has released the first in-depth look at the anticipated open-world game...and it looks and sounds so amazing that we're having a really hard time waiting for launch day, September 17.

The narrator first describes the size and diversity of the city of Los Santos, which is reported to be absolutely massive. Then they talk about how the three-protagonist structure will work, and provide us with a gameplay example: Not only can you switch between the three main characters when not in a mission, you can switch when in the midst of a firefight! So if one is in a sticky situation, another could assist.

We also learn that the mechanics have been greatly refined and everything - from playing tennis and riding bikes to driving and gunplay - will feel streamlined and fun. As expected, there's also a ton of customization, as we'll be able to change the look of our cars and clothes. We can dive in the ocean, fly planes, or just walk around in circles marveling at the virtual world Rockstar has created.

June one word sums it up nicely: Gimme!

I never got into IV--probably the biggest disappointment this gen.

I just hope V gives us more to do than playing pool and darts.

I contend that IV was a great city-sim: pretty to look at but nothing really to do. Even the side missions--dating, bar games, comedy clubs, TV, etc.--were nothing more than glorified cut scenes.

If scuba actually has a purpose beyond looking at stuff, it could be interesting.

How can this game look this nice and expansive on current consoles? Or do you think this footage is on a PC? I remember Red Dead and GTAIV looking similar to this only to be disappointed with the final product.

From this video, I actually didnt think it looked any better than say, RDR, so my guess is its running on PC if that was indeed the case with RDR before it released. Because I agree RDR sure didnt look like it did prior to release. I dont know...

So im not expecting anything greater than that, mainly because of how big this game is claiming to be. Ive been down this road before.

I guess it's some post-production done on the video after the grab. I believe I read somewhere that Rockstar is notorious for doing that, both on screenshots and video clips and quite frankly I believe it. It looks too good to be played on a PS3.

Yea, dev kits aren't any different than the actual models besides allowing you to code. So yes, ps3. The graphics are a downgrade from Max Payne 3 so how is it any different?

Except that grand theft auto 4 looked the same as it did in its trailers, that included its frame rate problems. Rockstar doesn't lie when it comes to gameplay, unlike the other two IV and RDR they were shown on xbox360. The 360 ones were coded better and played better. I am assuming they are more confident on their ps3 coders to show gameplay on a ps3.

Yea I'm gonna bet that's the pc version. We all know the graphical limitations on current gen. (Texture pop, view distance, resolution etc) I'll bet this is the pc version. A map that large and that detailed and smooth? Def pc version. No way the ps3 or 360 can do it at that resolution.
Even the gametrailers guys are saying it on twitter. No way that's current gen footage it has to be pc (which will also b he nextgen version as well)

That being said I'm sure it will be amazing on current gen consoles anyway but I suspect much lower resolution

Gta is just coming out at an odd time between console cycles.
There will be. Pc,ps4 and xb1 version.
They will release 1st for current gen then the pc n nex gen will come sometime 2014.
Only makes good business sense and it'll maximize sales.
They just need to wait until ppl get more nextgen consoles before bringing it over.

Noway they gonna start a new 1 just for nextgen. I suspect they will bundle DLC with it or something

That trailer left me wanting this game, when I had no interest for it before now.

The multiplayer is really what looks interesting to me.

Other than that THIS is what innovation looks like to me. It really looks like rockstar put in everything they could think of, and are trying to make each element so good it could be its own game. The tennis looks good and like a tennis game would, so did all the extra side stuff you could do.

I think that if they deliver on all these things we might have a game of the year, even over the last of us and bioshock, and I never thought I would say that.

Not sure why everyone seems to view GTAIV as downgrade from the previous installments. Sequels will never provide us with the same joy the first game was able to accomplish. GTA3 and Vice City were gold during their period and too me are still classic, but that's old tech. But when people talk about GTA, they are usually referring to GTA San Andreas. I for one loved the endless open world, but I found the story to be stupid quite honestly. But San Andreas popularity was built off of freedom more than anything. I was glad IV took a serious approach to the story introducing a new type of character arc, but if you weren't doing missions, the game did dry up pretty fast. That's was its only downfall in my opinion. That and the horrible driving physics. Let's fix that Rockstar.

So hopefully V is a mixture of endless gameplay feautured in San Andreas and the serious approach to story telling Rockstar has recently become known for.

Trailer and info looks very much promising.

Not sure why people think this is somehow not PS3... but I suppose Rockstar should feel flattered that they can produce stuff that fools people into thinking it's better than everything else on the current-gen.

Man goty this year will be nuts.
Bioshock vs Last of Us vs GTA5.
Then there's Beyond Two Souls as a potential candidate. Insane. 3 games all in one year on a supposedly old and tired platform that redefine what is considered the 'best' of the generation.

It baffles me how so many don't seem to understand there is a direct relation between map size and level of details on graphics. Just baffles me. Surely you don't need to be a developer to understand that?

To compare the graphics between a strictly scripted, close quarter linear game with open-ended, gigantic map games like these makes as much sense as comparing performance between a semi-truck and a Japanese speed bike. It just makes no sense to do so.
