Square Enix Needs To Ask FF Fans Only One Simple Question

I can clear this whole mess up. An entire generation of increasingly bitter (and even hostile) Final Fantasy fans vs. an entirely detached company called Square Enix.

We say "detached" because we're still convinced they have absolutely no idea what their long-time followers really want. So, in order to bypass more ugly fallout, I've come up with one single question that Square Enix can ask the gaming community, and the answer will solve both problems. Are you ready? It's real simple; here it is:

If asked, would a Final Fantasy fan say they want Final Fantasy X HD more than Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII? Even more than Final Fantasy XV?

I'm aware that's basically a two-part question, and it's probably not fair to answer both parts until we know a lot more about FFXV. But for the time being, we can go with Lightning Returns. Now, if I'm right, the vast majority of confirmed Final Fantasy fans will say they want FFX HD more. And if that's true, Square Enix would have to see how critically wrong that is; from a business standpoint, it would imply that their beloved FF franchise has only regressed. Many firmly believe this to be the case.

If, on the other hand, I'm wrong, and the majority say Lightning Returns, then Square Enix wins and we have to shut up. We have to recognize that we're in the minority, and that it's completely unfair to bash Square Enix for ignoring their fans because in truth, they're giving the fans exactly what they want. Either way, everything will be resolved. I still say FFX HD would be the hands-down winner in such a poll. That would mean that a high-def remaster of a 12-year-old game would be much more anticipated than the latest, greatest FF in the offing.

Square Enix wouldn't possibly be able to misinterpret those results? They'd have to see it. Right? ...uh...right?

Actually, I'd take XV over X HD simply because I've played X enough. XIII though? You betchaya!

In truth I've played X enough as well, probably too much, but this is all I have to look forward to now.

Sure I'll get XV, but A) It's not going to be what I want from the series as a fan, and B) It could still be years away from release.

Same here. I really want Final Fantasy X HD but can't deny that Final Fantasy XV is my most anticipated title (well, Final Fantasy title) right now.

Lightning Returns though? Wouldn't play it even if Square offered me all the gil in the world.

Uh oh, the FF complainer haters will be out...

This lifelong fan definitely wants FFX HD more than Lightning Returns. I have already pre-ordered FFX and if I play Lightning Returns at all I will be voting against it anyway by buying it used.

What you say here is the crux of it, it isn't like they just made a few bad games by misjudging things, it's a whole gigantic disgusting philosophy at Square Enix that makes me ill as a fan of the good games. It's like, I dunno Naughty Dog turning The Last of Us into an FPS or Uncharted into Gears of war.

Wada whispering from the shadows: "They love that sports mini game called Blitzball and the most appealing part of X-2 was the girls so let's mash up those 2 elements... we'll make a Blitzball simulator with hot babes in bikini called Final Fantasy X-3: Bikini Blitzball!"

Yeah, something like that could happen... :p

considering some of the images I've seen on this site, the graphical quality of today's games, and the fact that this bikini blitzball would undoubtedly include some of the most beloved female FF characters of all time, I'd wager most people on this site would buy that game before Lightning returns.

I want X HD, because XIII-2 story sucks, and I think they can't fix it with Lightning Returns, but I did like XIII. If SE just leave it like it is and didn't follow up with XIII-2 and Lightning Returns. Besides Lightning Returns feels like a spin off to me. And I'm looking forward to FFXV, the kingdom hearts style battle system is fine with me. I just hope it will be release within a year or 2.

Its dated.

Remember, it was 1997. 3D worlds were still very fresh and new for the time. And CG had not really been done well before. The blocky animations were crazy awesome at the time. I remember thinking, "how did they do that?!?" many times. At the time it was revolutionary. It didn't sell over 10mil copies for nothing! Lol

Its hard to go back to a 16 year old game if you have no nostalgic connection.

What Underdog said.

Its like being exposed to graphical/gameplay advancements from the year 2040 first then comparing it to the PS4/Xbox1 gen.

Imagine, if you will, a game/games of this gen or this upcoming gen that will blow you away visually or otherwise. Now imagine a person new to gaming in the year 2040 stating the same exact thing you have in your comment.

I think that's best way to help you understand what we mean.

Cinematic HD remakes of
FF1 or FF2 or (U.S.) FF4

I would take any of those over the aforementioned only because I completed FFX including the monster ranch and have no reason to revisit that world again. I also
own FF13 and have only played about halfway through the game so far.

To be honest I am content with all the PSP versions of FF1,2 & 4. They're keep true to their original format in being 2D and they look superb.

If any Final Fantasy needs to be remade now, it is Final Fantasy V! There is the GBA version, but I played the GBA version of VI and it was ruined by the updated translation - to the point where it changed the personality of the characters. They recently released an iOS version... but I just cannot stand the look of it. It looks like a typical flash mobile game rather than keeping true to the 16-Bit design the PSP versions of 1,2 & 4 did.

See there is a tremendous problem with this question. Before my backwards compatible PS3 broke I was more than content on how it looked Upscaled and through the HDMI. But now I have to put up with a PS2 Slim which cannot handle a good resolution out put even with a component cable I feel I am in dire need of this HD re-release. Had Sony stuck to their guns and kept the backwards compatbility I simply wouldn't need it. So in a way I feel con'd there from having that feature taken away from me.

So with that out of the way now onto the Question. Do I want the FFX re-release over Lighting Returns. Yes. Because XIII should never have become a series. I was happy with the first game and felt no need for it to be expanded on and the story I got with XIII-2 was so convoluted I just began to loose interest. I still want Lighting Returns. Even if it looks like a Spin off and fails to live up to what a Final Fantasy XIII-3 should be, I just want the XIII series finished.

Do I want the FFX re-release over FFXV... No the reason being while FFXV wasn't even conceived to be a traditional FF it still looks like a very good game. Part of the reason is that I also dislike the FFXHD's character models. while they have more detail they don't look have as good as the originals structure. Tidus looks so bland as you saw in the picture comparison I showed yesterday.

I will no doubt get FFX-HD But only because I have been deprived playing my PS2 games through my PS3 - Making all my PS2 games redundant as they just look awful. So there are many positives and negatives to this release.

I had the same issue.
Have you tried an A/V receiver that upconverts to progressive 1080?
I swear by this.

I can play any old ps1 ps2 game and still manage a decent pseudo high def glossy picture which isn't improving the graphics but does improve that middle ground between what the system is outputing and your tv is receiving.
This is
more akin to what the Ps3 upscale accomplished.

So far I think I've only done the "At what point does Final Fantasy cease to be 'Final Fantasy?' article. I purposefully left it out of my article on series directions because of the backlash. But you can bet I'll keep asking the questions until I get some decent answers. Moving on.

I think Square Enix is currently the most fascinating anomaly in the gaming industry for one. These types of articles aren't the blatant "hate" that people paint them as, they are an attempt to stoke conversation to try to get into the mind of a company that is slowly committing suicide right in front of us by killing arguably the greatest franchise of all time. And I hope that somewhere somehow they reach their intended audience and spark change.

I don't think you can examine it enough myself, it's a study in denial of reality on a level heretofore unseen. I have dozens of questions I'd like to have the community discuss over it. The rest of the industry is mostly dandy, trying to find a balance of fan service and mainstream appeal. FF is doing no such thing and SE keeps saying and doing things that deny reality while the gamers are sitting here with the answer to all of SE's financial woes and the company could give two sh*ts.

On the other side of things, it's worth talking about so long as these games stay in the news and they ignite our passions for writing about them. This community has strong feelings about JRPGs, if there were more Call of Duty fans there would probably be more editorials about that.

To be honest I am pretty sure there are notably more shooter fans or wrpg fans in this community than there are jrpg fans. It's just the jrpg fans are very vocal, encouraged by the editorial focus.

But hey - I really hope none here take my comments in this thread negatively. If so please tell, cause that is *so* unintentional.
It's all meant tongue'n'cheek, just making fun on how many articles there can possibly be written about SE's fall from grace. It's all part of PSXE - wouldn't be the same without'em. Much like mister underline. :)

No I know -you- aren't insulted, or even necessarily insulting, Beamboom. Didn't mean to suggest I think you really are insulted. It was more general.

I think World points out a good defense though. I remember a couple years ago there were a ton of articles about the direction of CoD, it's brokenness, and lack of innovation despite record sales. There's been plenty of those. There's also been hoo-hah over some of the medal of honor stuff too.

Difference is... MoH folks respond... and the rest of us sort of accept the fact that why would Activision care about putting more resources in a game that breaks sales records no matter what. SE, on the other hand, is -also- failing financially. So the whole thing is just strange.

aaaaaaaaaanyway, knowing square where theres a will theres a way.
just like crapcom, revelations sold really well so does that mean RE7 will be a return to form?
these companies dont give a sh*t about sales, there constantly worried about the what if sales.
which is why they will never change back, because there constantly stuck in the mindset that catering to everyone = more sales.
theres more people wanting to buy a new IP with a franchises name slapped onto it, then there is people who love said franchise and want to continue it.
bah!

I played 13, and even enjoyed it for the most part. Though I can't say I have any interest at all in 13-2, or lightning returns.

However, FFX HD is near the top of my list. X was actually my first FF. I was more interested in Rad Racer and Mario in my NES days, and even with all the hype I remember passing on VII, VIII, and IX. Then I remember playing the FFX demo on the PSM demo disc and thinking "Wow, I should really give this FF thing a shot". It blew me away. FFX is one of the most important games in my personal gaming history. It turned me to the Final Fantasy franchise after years of ignorance. There is a definite nostalgia there for me.

I can't say this is an unbiased opinion. In fact, it's full of bias. Nevertheless:

FFX HD... Shut up and take my money!
Lightning Returns... Just shut up already!

Why can't we just accept that SE is never going to make another turned based RPG again? It is not going to happen. We all know if they remade VII that it would sell in the multi millions but SE doesn't care. I hope HD X/X-2 sells well but I don't believe SE will suddenly see the light if it does. They are just too stubborn and don't want to admit that the path they are currently on is the wrong one.

Here's a better question: IF we keep making FF games the current way, will you play them?

YES wins, they're poor innocent victims of a minority. NO wins, they're idiots destroying our franchise.

Can't even misinterpret our answers.

I don't give a crap about any of them. Square-Enix when it comes to their internal studios, is dead to me.

you know im going to say this once doubt anyone will read this or care
Before FF13 was finished square Enix did a poll on what game FF fans were looking forward to the most out of these 3 games
FF Agilao aka Type0 now
FF13
FFVS13 Aka 15 now
this was 7 years ago
FFVS 13 was #1 by a landslide
FF13 was second
FF Agilao was third and close to 13
now its been over 7 years and there pushed out 3 second rate games before they give their fans what they want

in other words square really doesn't care about what we want they only care about what they want and there not going to change til they end up going bankrupt

Now as far as the question goes HD remixs are nice but i want to try FF15 before they remake 10 or finish there dress up game called Lightning returns
if i wanted to play dress up id take out a little big planet game and dress up a sack

I read and care. Your post is appreciated! Welcome to the site! Always fun to boost the ranks here.

But I don't remember any hype for vs.13 that was strong enough to trump the anticipation for XIII. I wasn't underwhelmed with XIII until AFTER I played it. Still was good. I wouldn't call it "second rate". Kind of had some foibles that took me out of the idea that it was an FF, though.

As for FFXV, I haven't seen enough to be excited about it yet. If it's an all out action game like they're saying, they will need to do some impressive things to make me want it. So we'll see.

I don't know for sure I'll want it because if it is all out action, you know it won't play like the FF's of the past. I loved FF because of the gameplay, depth, characters, etc... the whole package.

I'm not going to continue to be a fan simply because they put "Final Fantasy" on the package.
