Street Fighter IV Gets 5 New Characters, 6 New Stages In 2014

Hardcore fighting aficionados are bound to be salivating.

Street Fighter IV remains one of the most accomplished and entertaining fighting titles of the generation, and five more characters (along with new gameplay tweaks) will be heading your way next year.

As revealed at the Capcom Unity blog, the new characters as well as a balance update will arrive in early 2014. The characters are Hugo, Elena, Poison, Rolento and the fifth character remains a secret. The latter has never been in a SF game, so it's an all-new face! Furthermore, six new stages will be added as well. Said Capcom senior community specialist and former pro player Peter "Combofiend" Rosas:

"Iím personally excited to be able to use Rolento in SF4. Yes, he was in SFxT, but SF4 and SFxT play very differently, so itíll be a treat to use him against Seth, Hakan, and others that are not in SFxT."

The balancing should allow all the characters to be powerful, and they've outlined some improvements to characters like Chun-Li, T-Hawk, Dudley and Balrog. Cammy, on the other hand, will have to suffer some downgrades...but a lot of fans say that's necessary. All of this will be available on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC for $15, and the update will be released simultaneously across all platforms.

Sorry, but $15 to update a game is just too much imo.

A 2010 (or 2009 if you start with vanilla) game getting DLC?

And here I thought they were working on Street Fighter 5 or Street Fighter EX... :/

This is basically a copy-paste of character models so they need to tweak their moves...

this kills me. 5 characters + 6 stages = 1/4 cost of full ps3 game. i love sf but today's business model for video games seems so 'anti-gaming'. Some japanese cos. mayhaps have adopted the culture of greed that is inherent in the business scheme. Bring the passion back guys. Where's that famous japanese pride and strength? Be inspired by other devs and learn from what they do. Apply it to your own cultural values and give us back those great J-experiences that has been almost absent this entire generation. So far you've only adopted dlc get-rich-quick schemes and sequelitis on games that shouldn't have sequels. Yes this is about more than one co. i'm ranting but i am abit frustrated. Fiddlesticks man.

Looks like the restructuring hasn't changed anything at Capcom.

i believe theres a new update and a new disc version called ultra street fighter 4. they just keep releasing the same damn game whenever they have a major patch. and they can do it because these fans would still buy it. there has to be a point where they would just realize that theyre getting screwed over.

best time to buy capcom games if there was one is to buy them the day before the next actual installment releases. although with capcom, they might release a new version of the previous installment the same day as the new one.

Why would I be excited about this dlc, when Capcom could have come out with SF V by now, but instead they been wasting time making this, and the 20th iteration of IV (like they always do with every numbered release) in between making Marvel vs Capcom games?

Capcom needs a kick in the rear end to set them back on the right path, but I'm not even sure that would be enough motivation for them to pull their heads out of their collective backside. :(

Based on the comments, either no one here plays fighting games seriously, and/or they *really* don't understand the current gaming climate.

First, SFV: Even if they wanted to bring it out now, which they likely can't, there's no need to bring out SFV now. THey're no doubt working on it as we speak, but SFV is still years away - I hope to not see it before 2016 at the earliest. SFIV is still going very strong. Fighting games are not like other types of games: Fundamentally competitive, the best ones can are are played for years and years and years. SFIV is still the most popular fighting game in the world. By continually supporting their community, companies can keep their games and their brands in the minds of gamers. It sure beats the old model, which required a full priced update if they wanted to continue support them (Capcom's done this a handful of times this generation, but hopefully they've learned from their mistakes; certainly, they've done right by SFIV).

This isn't greed. CHarging $5 per character - now I see THAT as being ridiculous, though others apparently do not, since companies keep doing that and people keep paying for them (see also: Every single other fighting game series with DLC characters). $15 for 5 characters - even if 4 of them are copy and pasted, it's still work to tweak and balance them - plus a whole set of roster tweaks and (possible) system changes, resulting in a brand new game? More than reasonable. Not to mention its 4 characters who are actually wanted - prety much since SFxT didn't turn out so great, fans were asking Capcom to backport Elena, Rolento, Hugo and Poison to SFIV, and they have delivered.

The new disc update for $40 is optional, though also enticing since it also includes ALL previous DLC for free, essentially making it a GOTY edition. I would actually get that version if they were offering a PS4 version, since I would then have an excuse to get one before whenever FFXV drops. Regardless, it's perfect for those who never bothered to update before and for Tournament Organizers who don't want to have to mess with updating multiple copies to get all costumes. It's a win-win for everyone involved.

If you don't think it's worth the update, then your choice is simple: Do not buy it. No one is forcing you. For the rest of us who are still playing SFIV and enjoying it, we will gladly update and appreciate the continued support of our favourite series. For once, this isn't Capcom being greedy; this is called "giving fans what they want". Gamers need to recognize the difference.

How come World of Warcraft and Star Craft don't get this kind of hate?

You said it better than I could ever have lol. I have been waiting for an improvement patch on it. Glad it is coming with everything and then some. Still play IV and Third Strike religiously!
