June NPD: Physical Sales Slide, But The Last Of Us Was Hot

The NPD Group has released their findings for June and unsurprisingly, Naughty Dog's latest gem is at the top.

The Last Of Us topped the US software sales charts for the month of June, despite overall industry sales falling 15%. We don't have exact numbers for TLoU in this country but Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz estimates that the acclaimed title sold 700,000 units. As the game didn't launch until June 14, it took only a couple weeks to reach that number.

Rounding out the top five games for June were Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, Call of Duty: Black Ops II and NBA 2K13. Overall sales did fall 15% to $593.3 million, but analyst Liam Callahan reminded us that this number only accounts for about half the total dollars spent on games:

"These sales figures represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software, and accessories, which account for roughly 50 percent of the total consumer spend on games.

When taking into account our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales in June such as used and rentals at $118 million, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including micro-transactions, subscriptions, mobile apps, and the consumer spend on social network games at $544 million, the total consumer spend in June is $1.2 billion."

As for hardware, this category dropped 30% to only $142 million, which isn't exactly shocking. Everyone is lying in wait for the new consoles, ya know? One new console, the Ouya, hasn't exactly burned up the charts; we don't have exact numbers, but Callahan said sales were "relatively light." Total June software sales fell 14% to $313.8 million but again, The Last Of Us did extremely well. Said Callahan:

"The Last of Us was the top selling game at retail in the month of June. To put this in context, it had the second highest first-month sales of a PS3 first-party game, after God of War 3 in March 2010. The Last of Us was also the third highest game to launch during the month of June since NPD began tracking sales in 1995."

Also, don't forget that TLoU is a brand new IP, so this performance is even more impressive. Played it yet?

On a very happy note, I'm so glad to see The Last of Us getting the attention and praise it deserves.

I just hope it keeps selling like hotcakes and they have to press millions more copies to keep up pace with sales.

On a less happy note, I'll never give Notch a penny of my hard-earned money after he essentially gave Sony the middle finger after they sent him that golden PS1 as a goodwill gesture to be a part of their E3 presentation.

I don't care if he comes out with Minecraft: PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3, PS Vita, and PS4 Editions all at once, he can shove his games as far as I'm concerned.

Well considering that they didn't send any cables or power supply for it, a lot of good it did him. Besides, he's always stated (even before the exclusive contract thing) that the Xbox was his favorite console of the two.

Yeah, the biggest part is the contract thing. No matter what Sony does, there's nothing he can do if the contract restricts him from releasing it on PlayStation consoles.

That was just a VIP to the E3 event itself, not to be a part of it. Maybe Notch got to see sweet games behind closed doors that we didn't get to see yet and personal time with the big wigs as a VIP. Seems better than disparaging the man. But stay mad, though....

Why can't they tell us about digital sales? Why are they secret?

Perhaps, it isn't anything noteworthy. Other than that, I have no idea either.

Yes, why are they secret... I wonder the same! With next gen we might end up with no trustworthy source of sales numbers at ALL, due to this secrecy.

It something NPD aren't able to do. However, a recent article said they are close to reporting on digital sales. I guess it's very important and will be a reality during the next gen.

Sony doesn't need to know something they already know.

I'm sure Sony will release that info eventually...but it'll on their own terms and when they're good and ready. Then article writing types will have a whole new article they'll be able to write! :)

Still thinking about The Last of Us and it's messing with my ACIII enjoyment. Just can't seem to concentrate on ACIII. I may have to take a break and come back to it later.
