Former EA CEO: Activision Could End Up A "Sh**** Company"

Former Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has outlined two possible scenarios for the future of Activision, arguably EA's stiffest competition.

Firstly, during a recent GamesIndustry International interview, Riccitiello addressed the ongoing Call of Duty vs. Battlefield war. That war will begin afresh this fall when EA's Battlefield 4 faces off against Activision's Call of Duty: Ghosts. Time to throw down!

Of course, there's no chance BF4 outsells Ghosts but during each face-off, the Battlefield franchise has managed to steal a bit more market share away from CoD. And Riccitiello believes that "EA's got the better cards." As for the future of Activision, he considered the following:

"There’s one scenario where they ship a new MMO, it replaces WoW, Call of Duty stays at the top of the charts, Skylanders goes from strength to strength. They do a couple of things with their licenses, everything goes fine.

Then there’s a scenario where WoW continues to decline, Battlefield takes the mantle from CoD, Skylanders proves to be a flash in the pan and Activision proves to be a shitty company at that point."

I thought Skylanders would be a "flash in the pan," but it seems to have crazy "Pokemon"-like potential at this point. As for CoD, it has been declining and analysts have said Ghosts probably won't shatter all the records set by previous installments. Lastly, with WoW subscriptions declining, will Activision come up with another massive MMO cash cow...?

Things change quickly in this industry. Don't forget that Activision once filed for bankruptcy back in the '90s...

Ah, I dunno it's hard to call. They aren't re-investing in their franchises or bothering with new IPs, opting instead to send all the money upstairs, so you'd think that would eventually catch up to them.

I don't know what goes on in CoD fans heads but I'd be burnt out on it by the next generation with an eye toward something that has the potential to get better with time.

What goes on in this fans head is entertainment. Its $60 well spent because Ill get my money out of it. The games arent bad and actually good and most people admit that. Which makes them easy to pick up and play. They are the epitome of action FPS games.

Call of Duty fans are just stuck In a rut and have no imagination to do anything other than play the same game every year.

Well I've been a COD fan since the first Modern Warfare.

I stuck strictly to Infinity Ward CODs though, until Black Ops 2. BLOPS2 was the first to go into a futuristic setting and is an okay game.

But I can tell with Ghosts, that the series is getting a flat tire. I am well and truly OVER Activisions reluctance to invest in a new game engine. I can't wait for people to play Ghosts and see that it looks current gen.

I have begun looking to Battlefield for my FPS fix for next-gen. That game continues to improve, and the graphics are always amazing. The Frostbite engine has a dedicated team which spends their lives improving and revising the engine, which is the reason for its continued success.

Buckeyestar -

I guess im stuck in a rut. Except my library of games expands all genres.

I really dont think of the BF games like you do, and I dont think they continue to improve. Thats just my opinion, and I respect others. Because im not saying the games are bad. Just a difference of opinion. Looking at the entire game not just the mp, sure the graphics are good but the campaign in BF3 was a joke. Short, predictable, and thats not saying CoD does those things better, im not trying to compare the two here. I just dont think continually upgrading the engine turns into a continually improved gameplay.

With that said I am looking forward to BF4 because the series is entertaining. More so I look forward to any FPS because I enjoy them.

Byt in topic. I have also been a fan of CoD since the start of the series. I look forward to each inatallment because I havw fun with them. Regardless if they are familiar. I enjoy the gameplay bottom line.

Is it the need to have the newest one because that's where the multiplayer community will be?

i have to say they cud well be in decline. i think is losing it's mantle to some degree not sure how big but it wudn't surprise me as they have failed to do anything amazing. i still like bf3 more than mw3 and bo 2 and even mw2 and bo 1 best of the cod series and my friend who plays wow alot said it sucks ryte now and i cud really start dy out as for the companyy i think it is in some trouble. and yeah idk wat goes on in most cod fans heads even some of my friends i just think they are far better games.

i'll give you a bet if cod doesn't improve alot soon it's going down hill pritty fast and soon. cos even morons can tell a big diference if there is one between BF and COD after the nxt round although i thin BF will take some more market share this time.

happy gaming =)

I think Activision already is a sh***y company.

The majority of Bobby Kotick's business strategy is to keep on selling these gaming franchises that make parents buy a million accessories and peripherals for their kids to get the most out of the games.

of course there going to come up with another massive cash cow, WTF do you think destiny is!?
i gotta go for the first scenario though, too many sheep and soccer moms in this world for COD, skylanders, WoW, diablo, starcraft, and such to go belly up!

Im not sure where this COD V BF hype comes from - they are 2 completely different games. BF is a more tactical affair - and is a vastly superior experience on the PC than on consoles. The console versions of BF3 (like MOHWF) were second rate - helis and jets are meant to be flown with a joystick ....

COD is THE console shooter. end off

I do agree with you that games look better with more to do on PC but BF3 on consoles is far better than COD on consoles in my opinion.

As for flying with a joystick..only a bad workman blames his tools. I prefer to look at it as more of a challenge..still suck at flying though!

Considering who he worked for he'd know something about sh*t companies and how to contribute very well to making said companies trash.

I have played World of Warcraft since its original beta and over the 9 +/- years in total length ive never once found a game as diverse and fulfilled with tons of things todo. But over that time I have hated the game more and more each expansion. The original game had fun things todo randomnly like pvp raid on crossroads, But the game turned into a "lets keep you playing longer, by making what you want todo take longer to complete" instead of the find different things each day attitude

Call of duty was dead after MW2 for me. Too much of the annualization killed the series. Im hoping Assassins creed doesnt keep following suit.
