Thomas Was Alone Tops 700,000 Sales

Love it when highly creative titles do well!

Thomas Was Alone has won plenty of awards since its initial unveiling, and that has undoubtedly helped it reach a sales milestone: According to what the game's creator, Mike Bithell, told Joystiq, the quirky IP has sold over 700,000 units.

This includes figures from the PC, Mac, Linux, PS3 and Vita, and it doesn't count copies obtained via PlayStation Plus for free. And that number is pretty darn impressive, especially considering that it's basically a game about rectangles. ...okay, that isn't fair at all, but you get my point. Bithell's new game is called Volume and supposedly blends Metal Gear Solid with user-generated content. It will include a "very strong authored story," which ought to entice a lot of people.

Have you played Thomas Was Alone yet? Do you think it deserves the sales success it has received? Most critics really seemed to love it.

It's a pretty good game were you control various AIs, which are different colored squares with different properties and personalities, and use them to complete platforming levels and puzzles. The game-play is simple yet fun, the visuals are amazing in a minimalist way, the story is nice and original, the dialogue is pretty witty, and the music is sublime. I would really suggest it.

It's particularly impressive since it's not even received that great review scores.

Got it last week via HumbleBundle, DRM free and Linux supported like it should be! Amazing game, glad it's doing well.

what never ceases to amaze me is how addictive and compelling such a simple basic game can be.
its the simple of the simple, i mean a blindfolded 2 year old could solve the puzzles in this game, but yet it just does not matter.
it somehow manages to capture your imagination and thats it, no matter how repetitive, unimaginative, simplistic, easy, boring, no matter how lackluster it is your still swept away by its charm.
its kinda like unfinished swan and journey, yet it actually manages to keep you in its trance instead of wearing off half way through.

It's great when original little games push more copies than giant games that were ill-conceived mainstream projects.
