12GB PS3 Confirmed For North America

The rumors were right.

During Sony's Gamescom 2013 press conference, the company confirmed that a $199 12GB flash-based PlayStation 3 model will be available in North America. In fact, it's already available at Amazon, Best Buy and Target.

Various retail leaks indicated that this budget-priced model would be coming soon, and now it's official. Sony also revealed that the same 12GB PS3 will see a price drop in Europe, falling from €229 to €199. This particular model has been on sale in Europe and Hong Kong since late last year; it's finally making its way to the US now. The only question is- will it be popular? Twelve gigs ain't a lot, even if you're only a casual gamer. But that price tag might be just the ticket for those late to the current generation, so maybe it'll be just fine.

Of course, you can probably expect a price cut for all PS3 models some time soon after the PS4 launches.

I don't think I would even be able to play GT5 with this thing. The OS takes at least 5 GB's worth? If that's the case we're left with 7GB, and that won't even hold my Tekken Tag Tournament game.

Tis good. Gotta get the PS3 into as many houses and hands as possible. Can you slap a real hard drive into it though if you need to?

I'm sure I read that you can add an HDD to this model, there was something said about a HDD overriding the 12GB of flash memory though so you don't end up with HDD +12GB.

Of course this is all based off of when this model released overseas, but I doubt they would change that when bringing it to NA.

If you plan to upgrade the hdd, you might as well buy the $250 sku version, unless you're planning for a slight upgrade like 120GB or something. Then again, there's the bracket cost...

12gb is a really tight squeeze. Especially when you need just as much free space available to install a game after having downloaded it.
Without expansion options I'd probably stay away from this.

You gotta be able to expand the size of the HDD on this thing, if not, what's the point of buying this.

to play Gran Turismo 5 and ONLY Gran Turismo 5. If it actually fit that is in the first place. Maybe GT6 will be lighter on the HDD.

I wouldn't have a problem with this if they included the HDD bracket, but they normally charge $20-30 for it for anyone who wants to upgrade their 'cheapo' version. Or are they including the bracket this time?

i think the 12g version is a joke cos like thats just a blue ray player and a couple games not enough HDD space i have a 160gb and i have used like about half of the 145-150gb avalible so if you want alot of games don't get this but if ur the guuy or girl who likes the cod madden fifa and battle field and maybe a racing or other game then this sud be anough space but other wise now way.

happy gaming =)

It could be a nice cost cutting measure for lower income folks, they would just have the inconvenience of having to delete their data after a playthrough. But that's a small price to pay to save $100 for them I think.

I have GT5 data that's about 10gb worth and Tekken Tag's data that's about 7gb worth. 12GB is just too small, even for people that mainly play disc-based games. To upgrade the hdd you need a $20 bracket and about $50 for a considerable hdd size and that puts you over $250. You might as well get the $250 sku.

At least it'll help Sony compete with the measly 4GB XB360.

So, there's people out there saying, Boy I'd sure like a PS4, but it's too much money. So I'll get this cheap PS3 with no room on it cheaper, and enjoy what the PS3 has to offer, in small quantities?

Honestly, shell out the bucks for PS4, then buy a few games here and there. You got a good 5 years to use it before PS5 time. and if you wait off 2 years then, you can get PS4 games cheaper (especially used), and have plenty of hard drive space for them.

This isn't meant for the serious gamer. It is meant as an entry point and as a media player.

If you are serious about gaming, you will obviously need a different model.
