Are PS3 Exclusives More Exciting Than Confirmed PS4 Titles?

Everyone is all excited for the new generation, and rightfully so. It is exciting.

Sony's bread-and-butter has always been exclusive software, so it's no surprise to see a few already on the immediate horizon for the PlayStation 4. Killzone: Shadow Fall leads the way this year, and then there's Knack and DriveClub. In early 2014, we should see inFamous: Second Son and The Order: 1886, both of which have tremendous potential. No doubt about it.

But you know, before the PS3 begins to ease into its old age, there are two exclusives in 2013 that might just trump anything on the PS4 list right now: Gran Turismo 6 and Beyond: Two Souls. Let's not forget that GT is one of the most revered (and best-selling) franchises in video game history, and Beyond developer Quantic Dream's last title, Heavy Rain, is one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed offerings of the generation. Sure, Killzone and inFamous are big, but neither come close to GT, and the storytelling potential of Beyond is absolutely staggering.

It's easy to get ahead of ourselves, especially in an industry that moves at a ridiculous pace. In fact, while there are plenty of great third-party games set for the next-gen consoles, easily one of the biggest - Grand Theft Auto V - will only be available for the current systems. Therefore, if you're a PS3 owner, you might be more intrigued by the new games for your "old" console, as opposed to the titles currently scheduled for the new hardware.

I might be.

Beyond yes, but my interest in the Gran Turismo series has dwindled in recent years.

If your just including ps3 exclusives that haven't come out yet then no ps4 has better games on the way, but it wouldn't be fair because the last of us came out not too long ago, that should count lol.

Yep, things are quite nice and cozy here with a PS3 and Vita only scope.

As someone who doesn't play video games for a living I have more than enough to keep me entertained.
Lets see the list of titles I still want to play before moving onto the next-gen.

DOA5 Ultimate
The Last of Us
Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus
Beyond: Two Souls
Splinter Cell: Blacklist
Gran Turismo 6
Ultra SF4
FFX HD Collection (Vita)
The Puppeteer
Rain
Yes, I am even interested in FFXIII Lightning Action
KZ Mercenaries (Vita)
Dragon's Crown
Batman: Arkham Origins
Ni No Kuni
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
MGS Revengeance
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix
Tomb Raider
Rayman Legends
...yah, there's no rush to go nowhere and I haven't even talked about my backlog of PC games either.

I'd also like to give the ZOE HD Collection a spin. Well more specifically ZOE2.
The game received a massive update recently, bringing it up to snuff.
While I always knew this about ZOE2, that being it was one of the few PS2 games that REALLY tapped the power of it's hardware, the Digital Foundry has a detailed breakdown of the pre and post patch performance of ZOE HD. The game took a MASSIVE increase in performance and resolution when the devs worked a patch that harnessed the SPU's to handle the job the PS2's vector units had. The RSX just couldn't handle the task on it's own. Hence why the original HD release was so shoddy.

I totally agree with Temjin001 except the for "The Puppeteer." I don't plan on buying a PS4 until it has a few must own titles or after its first price drop. I want a PS4 that was not rushed out of the factory to meet ridiculous demand. I plan on getting one when you can walk in a retail store and they have a constant supply.

To add to the List of Temjin001's I plan on getting:

Definite Purchase:
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
FFX HD Collection (PS3)
Grand Theft Auto V
Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag

Maybe Purchase:
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Diablo III
Watch Dogs

It's also nice knowing that many of the best games appearing on PS4's launch window are also coming to PS3. They're just lower res and probably lower frame rate. But ultimately they're the same game.

That is very true. Typically I would opt for the next gen version of a game, but if the only difference between them is graphics, I think I will pick up the current gen version, until I adopt a PS4.

But I still plan to support the PS3 for a while. Really theres no reason to stop supporting it if Sony doesnt intend to.

For me, if it's not obvious yet, GT6 is by far the most interesting for me. I don't see how it would for others though. I'm really passionate about cars and driving so it's a must for me. That's why the PS4 will have to wait as I am busy with GT6 this holiday. It'll be pointless for me to get the PS4, cause when GT6 arrives, it'll be sitting and gathering dusts.

Infamous atm, is really awesome looking though. DriveClub needs to show more than just pretty visuals.

BC on the PS4 would have been a no brainer if I was in any of the planning sessions. Considering how much cheaper the PS4 is than the PS3 at launch they could have charged an extra $50-$100 for the benefit of BC.
There really would be almost no reason for people like me to wait if that was the case. and I'm sure I'm not in a minority.

Nah, I'm gonna wait for a price drop on Beyond. We're at the end of the PS3's life and David Cage & Co. still can't make a game without screen tearing? Blah. I am looking forward to GT6 though. I spent a ton more time than I thought I would with GT5. Still go back to it every now and then. What I am REALY looking forward to though is Wind Waker HD in October and Mario Kart 8. MK8's visuals look amazing. Almost Pixar quality running at 60/fps in 1080p. Not to mention Mario 3D World. Booya!

My wife and I look forward to Mario Kart as well. That is of course after we get a Wii U. Not sure when that will be.

As for Cage and tearing, it's very likely that's conscious decision on his part. Running a game without vsync engage does allow for a game to maintain a higher overall frame rate while using higher layers of graphical detail. I'm sure he's weighed the factors on this and went with the choice that he felt best for delivering the experience he has in mind.

If you're going to complain about screen tearing in Heavy Rain, then you're just...way too anal to appreciate what he produces.

Shouldn't a game that's less focused on action and fast sequences such as Heavy Rain maybe sacrifice a bit in the frame rate department and enable v sync? I'd take a bit of slow down over tearing anyway. I admit I am very anal when it comes to tearing. I absolutely hate it. It rips me right out of the experience not to mention it gives me a headache when its really bad. It can be a game breaker for me depending on how bad it is. It was quite bothersome to me in Heavy Rain. So far the footage in Beyond doesn't give me much hope it will be any better. I'm still going to get the game, its just low on my priority list right now with GT6, PS4 and all the great Wii U games coming down the pike.

EDIT: Temji, hit me up when you do. I'd love to see what you can do with Nintendo's art academy app on the Wii U. It's amazing what people are doing with that app and Miiverse. Miiverse has quickly turned into my favorite gaming social network. Much more enjoyable than PS Home.

I think the idea here is for Cage to create a game that looks as realistic as he can make it. I imagine the frame rate will be in the 20~30 fps range as it is, and that's with vsync disabled. The payoff would be that the game will have a level of cinematic realism unmatched by anything on it's platform.

So how can you tolerate the tearing in Gran Turismo but not Heavy Rain?

Heavy Rain's limited screen tearing for such an impressive graphical leap felt totally okay to me. The average graphics of Assassins Creed 1, 2, 2.5, and 2.75 with rampant tearing was not okay in my book.

When adjusting GT5 to 720p the tearing was practically non existent. Especially when playing it in 3D. Worlds right, its not THAT bad in Heavy Rain. Many other games are much worse. But for a game that's built heavily on cinematic sequences, I just feel from a design standpoint they should figure out a way to enable v sync and maybe tone down other aspects of the games visuals. But I get your point in what he was trying to achieve.

And I'll add you brosky.

Some of the PS4 exclusives are interesting, but the PS3 ones are better, IMO. I'm not that amped for GT6. I loved GT5 for a while but it eventually just fell to the wayside and I imagine the same will just happen again.

On the other hand, Beyond, R&C: Into the Nexus, Puppeteer, FFX and Tales of Xillia (and the sequel) are more than enough to keep me amped for the PS3. Oh... and the backlog. And non-exclusives like GTAV.

My PS4 might be sitting for a while. I might quit playing Dragon's Crown (game of the year) by the time it comes out. I still have Tales of Xillia(haven't even opened it yet because of DC), Diablo 3 (offline mode yeah!), Final Fantasy 14 Online (Time eater here), and White Knight Chronicles 2.

I have TONS of RPGS on the Vita I want to play but haven't got around to it just yet.

I seriously cant stop playing Dragon's Crown.

I just bought a Nintendo Wii U. I skipped the Wii. Just wasn't me. I got Mario, Mario Party or whatever it's called, Donkey Kong and Punch Out for it. Yes they sell those old games on the site. But I am also playing some old Wii games too, say like the wonderful Fire Emblem.

I also bought Ogre Battle(original SNES game), and Ogre Battle 64(which I never played), for the Wii system(built inside the Wii u system).

I also bought the Wii game, Chronoblade, which is suppose to be a GOD GAME.

So I don't have a lot of time to say the least. In fact, Im glad I prepaid for everything for the PS4, including extra controller, Madden, and of course, BF 4.

IF not, I might have waited to play the PS4 later. Bah. Who am I kidding. I would have gotten the PS4 anyways. :)
