EA On Battlefield 4 vs. Ghosts: We Feel Good About Our Horse

The epic battle for first-person supremacy between Activision's Call of Duty and Electronic Arts' Battlefield franchises continues to rage. It's a heavweight bout!

While there's still virtually no chance a new Battlefield actually outsells a new CoD entry, EA's series has continued to steal away market share with every passing year. This makes things interesting, and EA Labels president Frank Gibeau says in truth, this competition is good for the industry. Competition begets quality, after all.

During a Gamescom interview with CVG, Gibeau didn't rule out the possibility of Battlefield 4 outselling Call of Duty: Ghosts:

"Look, we are absolutely going for it. It's a competition and we feel really good about Battlefield 4, and we have an old saying at EA which is 'transition is our friend', and we're going to try to lap them with new technology, new innovation, and new capabilities. So do I think we're going to do better than last time? Absolutely."

EA has steadily gained on Activision in the FPS race and while people may not like it, Gibeau believes that "competition drives innovation." He added that it's good for everyone, including the developers and consumers. As for the future shooter lineup, Medal of Honor is gone and EA will focus on Battlefield, Titanfall and Star Wars: Battlefront. Will that be enough to take down Call of Duty? Well, analysts are predicting a slide from Ghosts this year, so in the future, anything's possible.

I'm still left absolutely confused as to how someone could choose the COD series over the BF series. COD doesn't do a single thing better than BF. The only thing I can think of is the zombies feature but even that imo is a weaker version of L4D).

If they wanted to do better they might have familiarized themselves with the PS4 and Xbox One a little better and gotten past 720p.

Wait for the final product. If it makes you feel any better I'll be enjoying it in all its intended beauty.

BF4 is my choice no doubt. IW doesn't make good CoD games anymore. MW1 was their peak.

Though apparently, according to Scott Lowe from IGN, BF4 is not looking so great on the new consoles. EA is once again showing off maxed out PC footage of their game, passing it off as what to expect on consoles. A little concerned about the prospects of BF4 on PS4.

COD was my first venture into FPSs (lol FFPS). My friends and I only liked playing TDM though. Strangely, with BF3 we played mainly Conquest and Rush. TDM is still fun at times but feels a bit shallow now imo. The ppl on BF servers seem to be a bit more mature as well from what i've experienced so far. There are quite a few noteworthy exceptions but generally speaking ... The BF brand is chipping away at COD mountain slowly but that's because the COD fanbase is fiercely loyal and not easily swayed by other shooters.

The COD fanbase would get destroyed if they were to actually commit to a different franchise. Well PC side at least.

Competition drives innovation so long as you aren't just aping your competitors, which is what both companies are doing. Ghosts is conceptually similar to Homefront, while BF4 is a modern war shooter, the inspiration for which can still be brought back to COD:MW. They may be adding things, but I'd hardly call either game/series innovative nowadays.

Titanfall is sounding like a paradigm shift though, so although I'm not interested, I'm cautious to see what it spawns in terms of its competition, and we know nothing about Battlefront.

You know what I still want from an FPS? A World War I or Civil War setting. Trench warfare, unreliable weaponry, tanks that are truly frightening and knowing that if one appears you're boned. A slower, more methodical pace. It may not be innovation, but it's a very different route than what we are seeing.

I know what you mean. Seeing a tank in most modern shooters just doesn't frighten you as it did with the first MoH and CoD iterations. I remember most FPS games used to be based on WW1 or 2. Now modern times are the trend. What will be next?

Inspiration from COD:MW? Have you even played BF2?

of course competitions good, especially in this case where both are trying to show off different sides of each coin.
never really understood why the two are always compared to eachother, i mean yea there military shooters but thats about where the similarities end!
comparing CoD and BF is like comparing bayonetta and GoW!
two very fast paced action games, two highly sexualized main characters, but thats really where the similarities end.

DICE really worries me though, especially with forms to next gen.
first we hear IGNs not so impressive reactions to the ps4 demos shown at gamescom.
then we hear DICE say development for ps4 really has not changed much for us compared to ps3, were still treating it as parallel development.
and now today here they are saying there having to make compromises with next gen systems already!
i mean seriously!?
there not even out yet, and were already starting to see restrictions imposed by them?
developers are already having to cut things out now, so whats going to happen in 3,4,5,6 years when PCs are much, much, MUCH more powerful?
ive always been worried that next gen systems just are not enough of a step up, and as each day goes by thats being reinforced more and more and more.
i never thought id hear the term next gen consoles, and saying meh so much as i am now.
which is so sad, 7 f*cking years weve been stuck with the ps3.
seven VERY long years!
and this is how its replaced!?
talk about going out with a whimper!

Battlefield is my favourite PC game. Alas the console versions have been lacking.

From the PS4 footage for BF4 - it looks like consoles are getting the short stick again from EA/Dice.

Got my Origin pre order in - i can't fly jets / helis without my joystick!

jawk i wouldn't worry about that. Someone from dice clearly stated that that was an alpha version of the real game. They also said that the graphics would be better on the final version. What scott should have said is that bf4 doesn't look as good on consoles in general. He singled out the ps4 but ign is an xbox haven to be honest. At least thats what it seems like to me. About 3/4 of thier blogs/posts/articles are focused on xbox. I'm sure you know that though. I honestly have no concerns for the final release of the game. I think dice will make sure it's as clear and beautiful as they can make it for this new generation. I guess we'll see but i'm not worried

Still not sure why _______ even visits this site. He acts as if these last 7 years have just been dreadful with 0 great games on the ps3. Like it was just 7 years of failiure for sony. Quite the contrary sir. Quite the contrary. I say these 7 years have gone by relatively quickly and everything i've seen like for instance, the ps4 demo for The Division, which looked amazing!!! Not really sure what you've been watching or what you've been watching these awesome videos on. I don't think anyone should take what scott lowe has said about the ps4 very seriously. Ahh... oh well. I'll hold my reservations until the "Actual Final Game" comes out. i mean come on. Judging a full game on a demo is just retarded. They also scaled everything down because it was all local mp via lan. So they didn't showcase 64 mp or even full maps. Does that sound like a complete game to you? I think not!!!

To whoever said battlefield being in modern times can be brought back to cod:mw, you're just plain wrong.

battlefield 2 was released approx. 2 years before cod 4: mw.

So battlefield 2 was being developed 3-4 years before cod 4 even STARTED development. Then, after battlefield 2, they took it into the future with 2142. (kinda like what black ops 2 did)

if anyone is following anyone in reference to time shifts, cod is following battlefield. please get your facts straight. Thanx.
