First Ever Look Inside Lightning Returns Reveals Action Focus

Over the weekend Square-Enix began a three part video look inside the creation of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Amritz Lay, Associate Director of Marketing at Square-Enix, posted the first part on the Playstation Blog on Saturday. Called “Inside the Square,” the series is billed as the first behind the scenes look at the development of a Final Fantasy game in the franchise's 25 year existence.

With narration by Lightning's actress Ali Hillis we're treated to a behind the scenes take on what goes into this latest production. They discuss how to constantly reinvent the series while still delivering what fans have come to expect. They explain how their own experiences become a part of the game such as taking cell phone pictures regularly. They want us to know that Lightning is an incredibly popular character. They claim that the premise of the game is simple: “The world is dying because of a series of events that took place in the first two games.”

I played through both games and kind of wish that I had some clue how the second even related to the first, let alone how this new world 500 years later will enter into things. But hey, maybe it will all make sense when Lightning returns to save the world in February of 2014.

If there was ever any question about the direction of this game and the franchise as a whole these two quotes from the video should set you straight:

“With Lightning Returns we're weaving the RPG elements that are familiar from the first and second titles into what is essentially an action game.”

“Even in its thirteenth iteration, Final Fantasy remains on the leading edge of action RPG innovation.”

Lol. They know their falling behind now. People didn't play 1-12 for the action aspect. People aren't playing 14 for the action aspect. They played those because its Final Fantasy. It was pretty much its own genre. You said Final Fantasy and the other person knew exactly what you were talking about. Keep doing this with 13 Square cause this game isn't your salvation.

I was struck by how this first part appears to be laying out a case to attempt to rewrite history as the video series continues.

... the way he's talking, fans WANTED this. Maybe we are a minority and all Japanese people want this series to turn into an action game and control only one character? O_O

Or they're all just completely delusional and Lightning is their Waifu so they don't want to give up on her.

The Team looks really committed to the game, and It's great to see that they're wrapping the stories of all the main chars of XIII and XIII-2, I'm cautiously anticipating this now.

On the other side, the quote "Even in its thirteenth iteration, Final Fantasy remains on the leading edge of action RPG innovation." bothered me too, but I guess SE simply won't go back to the turn based most of us love. sigh...

As much as I love turn based I don't even need that to get on board, just a return to it being an RPG with the familiar elements and pacing of what made FF awesome.

Plus maybe some semblance of a command-based system would be great. I don't see why it has to be either automatic or fully action battles. There's some nice room in between.

I agree, Xenoblade proved that you can still have a traditional JRPG experience without turnbased combat. But this game as I have said many times before feels more like FFVII :Crisis Core than an actual Final Fantasy title - That was a spin off so it was acceptable, while this game (Which is no 'Final Fantasy XIII-3') is the conclusion to the series, so to have it as an action game is challenging. If we're honest, it doesn't have the scope of something like Uncharted or Tomb Raider in that department.

@World

I don't know about that... I actually disliked FFXII's gambit system much more than FFXIII battle system (I disliked it too, but not that much). My love for turn based was what took me to the Persona games... at first I didn't even liked visual novel/dating sim Japanese games, now, I love them...

Hey World, Do you know anything about Persona 5? It seems like ages since the last news about it came...

On August 13th we got a little reassurance that Persona 5 is coming along even with some problems at Atlus' parent company. It's looking like we won't seen any news on it until next year though when Atlus celebrates their 25th anniversary.

I too did not develop a taste for visual novels until I got into Persona (and subsequently learned about their ancient history in Japanese shadow theatre) and I'm really looking forward to P5.

As far as FF goes I'd of course prefer turn based return but I think that is a bridge too far so I'd be excited for anything that goes in the right direction.

They are really this full of crap at SE or were they just paid to say this nonsense?

I mean, they want this to somehow appeal to the mainstream but it ISN'T going to happen, it can't when the main character is a pink hair female who is about as likable as a box or rusted nails.

I don't know who at SE got an erection for Lightning but when people say she is a really loved character I can't help but call BS.

People loved Sephiroth, and Cloud, Vivi, Squall, Tifa, Kain, Cecil and like so many more. I believe that if you asked ALL the final fantasy fans in the world lightning would rank very low in favourite FF character.

Man this video just made me so sad for this company. FF14 reborn gave me hope, but this video is taking that away lol.

Too true and to think this was the one to get a trilogy. Not to mention they say in such a way that the decision was made because they believe ff13 deserved it or was the most popular.

With only ONE (1) ending this game's only worth playing (& finishing) once. Square can say/pitch what/all they want.
