David's Week In Review: September 8th

Ben said he'd be traveling most of Friday and Saturday but I don't actually know when he's getting back so I'll just keep things rolling if nobody minds overmuch.

PS4: 11/15, Xbox One: 11/22

The competition finally got a due date this week and we learned that the Playstation 4 will get a full week head start on the Xbox One. PSXE has been keeping a pretty close watch on the pre-order status of both in that always tempting attempt to read the tea leaves. We're all aware of the blunders that led to some extremely lopsided numbers in favor of PS4 but this little war is just warming up and if anybody can gain ground it's Microsoft.

Most of the community members felt that the week head start for PS4 wouldn't make much of a difference because folks would have already pre-ordered their console of choice or decided to wait. I'm inclined to agree but the market can be unpredictable. Even a week of positivity and “me-too” syndrome can start serious momentum that the opposition would have to contend with.

Leave the half naked girl be.

There is entirely too much nonsense surrounding the silent character in Metal Gear Solid V known as Quiet. I don't know if you've all been around the internet seeing what people are saying on the matter but it's getting ugly out there. And I mean more than usual for the internet. Other developers are taking potshots at Kojima. Imagine that, at the legend himself!

It's a fantasy world people, not every developer is interested in realistically representing military personnel and their clothing. Are the haters even familiar with the plot and characters in the series before they pass judgment? I also still say we shouldn't be judging eastern games based on ethnocentric notions of what is okay and not okay in the realm of digital sexuality.

No More Yakuza? Say whaa?

What's this I hear about Yakuza 5 not getting localized? I admit part 4 was my first game in the series but I loved it and was looking forward to the next one. What a shame. We can always hope for a limited run some time down the line but the fan base here really is too small. Some time ago I reported on a voting measure that would allow a localization company to give developers a big discount on the game that won and Yakuza 5 was a contender. I don't know which one won, I should probably try to follow up on that story.

GTA the best of all worlds?

If you missed the new information about the controls in Grand Theft Auto V I suggest you give them a glance, they made me feel better. It's all about how other Rockstar games inform the gameplay.

Personal Gaming Update:

I've been pressing forward with Tales of Xillia when I can, I must have about 30 hours into that sucker and new things are still happening to the gameplay. I'm just going to enjoy any JRPG I can while they are still being made, turn-based or no turn-based I still say the battles are strategic enough to make it more than an action RPG.

Also with a bunch of price drops and sales I've been able to pick up a good haul and have fallen in love with Binary Domain. Is it a super polished visually stunning shooter? No. Is it a serious, grown up gaming experience? No. It has a great Japanese style story that keeps expanding and growing, it has awesome environments, it has very distinctive characters, it has some innovation, it has variable gameplay, and it's fun I tell ya.

Thanks to everyone for sticking with me and I'll see you in the comments section.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary with the sniper woman. All I can say is this game just looks like it's in a league of it's own. Anyone see the most recent trailer? It oozes awesomeness. Granted, it was uncomfortable seeing all the torture stuff in the beginnings but there's no denying it's going to be an epic worth experiencing again and again. I hope Kojima sticks to his vision.

I started Binary Domain a month ago or so. I dunno. I think I may write it off. Yah, it's shooting is solid enough. The voice acting is mostly poor to fair. The art direction is pretty fair as well. Technically it's nothing special either. The only thing I felt compelled by was the story. Though, I don't think that's enough to keep me playing when there's just too many other games I'd rather spend my limited time on.

PGU: It's been all about DOA5 Ultimate this week. I really love it. It's like gaming euphoria for me. Not sure if it can get better than this for me =)

If you only played a couple hours that's not really enough to endear it to you and probably made it seem like a bad attempt at a western shooter, it keeps getting better as more characters expand the world and the story takes some turns.

thing is, it's ultimately another TPS. Uncharted and Vanquish are enough for me. That and having played also 3 Gears of War games. the whole thing feels 'been there done' that for a genre I'm not particularly a big fan of.

Wayyyy more expansive plot and gameplay wise than Vanquish imo.

A few months ago I would've been right there with you, being all "yah, Binary Domain is way better than Uncharted or something higher rated" due to some discrete less popular reasons to hedge my value system on. But lately I'm making a conscious effort to stop playing everything and anything that seems somewhat compelling. I've amassed too much of a back log with my old habits. It's a purchasing habit that needs to change as I feel idiotic for buying more when I can't expend more time to catch up and play everything I own. Perhaps, if I was wanting to become a professional as a game critic, I'd be okay with this as I would make more time for them.
So as it is, Binary Domain, despite it's unique qualities, doesn't pass MUSTARD =p

Who's this "David"? I only know of WorldEndsWithMe.

I've never been a GTA fan but that may be a good thing for me because that game would eat up my time, which has mostly gone to FFXIV:ARR. I've put Xillia on Hold for a bit while I try to finish up Killer is Dead.

Looking forward to KZ:Mercs and KH1.5. I likely won't play KH1.5 because I already beat the original versions and need all the time I can get.

I'm not bothered by the over sexualization of the characters in MGS5 but I don't think it's necessary. It kinda takes away from the realism. What soldier lady would be wearing a thong in the field? None. I miss The Boss. :/

Ive been looking for something to keep me busy until Wind Waker comes out. Kind of board with everything right now so decided to play Metroid Prime 2: Echoes again. Been awhile. Man, they just don't make shooters like this anywhere else. Heres hoping they make another Prime entry for the Wii U. Heck, I'd take an HD remake of these games too.

Finally an MGS fan that gets its here in the comments. Im sure others feel the same but many MGS fans are trying to defend it. It just doesnt fit. Doesnt mean the game is terribke or Kojima is a bad designer. Its just not something you would expect.

I posted a link to the full design below. I hadn't seen the entire design until now. Man, its not even sexy. The girl used to make the model is actually really pretty. Shame they turned her what she appears as in the game. Sexy in games is fine with me, but I don't find this character design sexy at all.

Im fine with sex in games as long as it fits. If it feels out of place I tend to wonder why its there. This is out if place.

* It kinda takes away from the realism *

Hey it's far more realistic to have a character that is out of synch with the rest than everything looking the same.

Look through the window and tell me everyone dresses in the same fashion.

Sure we are talking about military but she probably is not in your standard government army.

And bigrailer: This is not out of place. Neither me or you are fit to judge what HIS GAME is filled with. All that he wants in his game will have it's place. Make your own if you want to decide what should be and what should not be.

Man I sure wish devs would just shut up about their games until it is released so that people don't have a chance to alter it's glory.

The internet is bad for the industry XD Giving a voice to people who have nothing to do will always result in chaos because good or bad they will find a defect and just hate on it.

@World, sure... But that's an Easter egg and is intended as that. This is entirely different. Plus panties is hardly trashy. The design all around of this character in question just looks skanky. Like a prostitute broke into an army surplus store. XD

@Neo, all I'm aying is its just not practical. Even if she's not your typical army grunt. A thong bikini with shredded fishnets? C'mon.....Kojima and his crew are better at designing characters than this. Eva in Snake Eater could be considered sexy...but not this new character in my opinion. Trashy doesn't automatically = sexy. But that's just me I guess.

Well, in further research, it seems this character has a chomeleon like ability that allows her to change her skin to blend with the environment. So that puts some context as to why she's lacking more clothing. Makes more sense now. Not a fan of the design but at least the skank factor seems less now.

I'd rather play Yakuza 5 over GTA5 anyday. I'm disgusted that Rockstar decided to bring a garbage I meant gangmember to help with the game. Games are meant to be fun not recreate the real world.
Binary Domain gameplay is weak but, the bosses are awesome kinda remains me of Shadow of the Colossus.

Yeah, MGS V has bigger things to worry about than the character design of Quiet. An IGN article recently likened it to Splinter Cell: Conviction. I haven't played that game, but nor have I heard too many positive things about it from stealth fans so...

And Binary Domain is a really good game for what it is. I mean, it's nothing exemplary and can seem a little dull and phoned-in at times, but there's still something special about it. Those boss designs are amazing, even if the battle mechanics are a little bit 200X. I really enjoyed the story, but. The whole Frankenstein Complex and the stuff with the Hollow Children. Oh and Dave, fair warning about the ending...

It really rather sucks.

I'm sure I'll do okay, I have only seen 1 or 2 good endings this entire generation to be honest with you.

The game really is more than the sum of its parts, it just looks bad compared to western shooters that go for authenticity and physics and whatnot. Ultimately it has a lot more going for it in the diversity of gameplay in the campaign than western shooters imo.

I guess I'll comment on both.

I wanted to mention a something on the Silent character and the article regarding next gens graphical jump but never had the time so I'll do it now.

Since when has any MG title not had at least one overly hot character? If you don't like it then maybe get into the industry yourself and start making games where the females all where sweaters. Or just don't buy the game. It wouldn't feel right, with out any partial nudity in my MG title.
And in regards to the graphics. Am I the only one who thinks MGSV looks amazing. Watch this year's the GDC presentation. The difference from real life photos and and in game/real time engine photos are slimmer than ever. I can't understand all of the negative feed back MGSV and next gen graphics in general are getting. Yeah I know it's mutilplat and the hardware isn't the massive leap like we saw in the PS2 too the PS3, but even streamed youtube videos show a clear improvement!

In looking at the full image of the character in question in MGS5(I hadn't seen the full design until just now), I'm not against trying to be "sexy" but that character design is far from it. It does look pretty trashy.

Want to make a female character sexy? Sure, have at it...but this isn't it. Lol

This week i've noticed an increase in Tifa avatars. No complaints but i wonder if theres some sort of secret society that worships her. In my current playthrough of ff7, i named her Melon.

Taking a break from ff14. I was eating dinner while in the forest when Odin decides it would be funny to show up and one shot me. My first game over was also the harshest.

Walmart had this rollback deal for Naruto ultimate ninja storm 3 for 20$ so i bought it. Not a fan of the anime, but i loved the first game. Second one was meh, but im really enjoying the 3rd one. As for the half naked lady, if Rikku can climb Mt. Gagazet in her thief outfit, then people should lay off. I just blame the feminists though. Men are men, and men enjoy women. In a video game things like that really shouldn't matter.

GTAV is going to be awesome. I don't have much faith in the story because theres an over-used oommon trend with it. Your some guy who turns a small time drug dealer. By the end your on top and all you need to do is one last mission and your the bestes there ever was. Hopefully they'll use RDR and Max Paynes story to influence the game. Really looking forward to the multiplayer though.

Binary Domain is seriously under rated in my opinion. Easily the most solid controlling TPS I have played on a Console period.

As for grand theft auto it looks like the multiplayer will be sold separately as well as on the normal disc and because the MP looks amazing Ill probably get that.

PGU- Grinding out some more characters in Dragons Crown has been a blast.

Just got Rayman Legends and it is a masterpiece. Probably my Goty with Dragons crown.

I see nothing wrong with Quiet and I'm surprised other developers care. While sexually attractive her anatomy isn't of this world like Dragon's Crown (not that I think there's anything wrong there either), only that she is clothed rather oddly for battle.

But man does that sound peculiar in this industry eh (dripping with an OBSCENE amount of sarcasm)?

Oh yeah nearly forgot PGU:
I finished the main story for AC2 a fourth time and probably the last but definitely one of my most beloved games of this past generation.
