Beyond Censored In Europe, But Story Won't Be Affected

Bear in mind that this is a very slight censorship.

As confirmed at the European PlayStation Blog, Quantic Dream's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 exclusive Beyond: Two Souls has been "briefly censored" in Europe.

Sony representative Ross Alexander confirmed in the comments section that "two cuts have been made to the European version" so the game could be sold with the PEGI 16 rating. But really, this only involves about 5-10 seconds of gameplay that has been edited. Sony wanted the PEGI 16 rating to make the game available "to as many people as possible," so the light cutting had to be done. But as Alexander added:

"I can assure you that this does not affect the game’s story at all, and that if you didn’t know these scenes had been amended, you wouldn’t even notice."

Oh, but I'm sure some people will still freak out. It's interesting, however, to note the small differences between the ESRB in the US, with a rating of "M-Mature, 17+" and the European PEGI scale, which only goes to 16 years of age. Maybe that one year difference is the reason for the altering of that 5-10 seconds. Anyway, Beyond should be beyond awesomeness.

according to Cage only one is needed to play the game in it's entirety for a touch screen.

and I wonder how Cage feels about this. He didn't go with MS with Heavy Rain because of censorship reasons. I wonder now if Cage will just go multiplat for the next-gen..

If it's anything like the cut in 'Fahrenheit', I doubt it's important. I'm not for censorship or anything, but I don't recall the last time anything essential was cut out of a game for censorship reasons.

It's not like they cut out whole chunks of story. And if someone insists this is somehow horrible, they can always import.

I still don't understand our rating system. Previously we had the BBFC rating for all out games. Now we have PEGI and the BBFC so a game that can be a PEGI rating of 18+ and also have a BBFC rating of 15+.

As for the cut 10 seconds... still want to know what it is...

Digital bewbs! I know it's not a big deal but I don't like this slope, every R rated movie franchise that cuts to get PG13 turns into crap.

America cuts nudity. Europe usually cuts grotesque violence.
It's great to see the usual level-headed responses on this site. You should see some of the over-reaction in the comments sections elsewhere on the net.

Normally I'd agree but since it's for the express purpose of lowering the rating it makes me wonder, I don't recall much grotesquery in other QD games but plenty of sexuality.

I read somewhere else that content were cut for both markets, but for different reasons. In the US it was censored for erotic content, while in Europe it was some scenes of violence that were cut to qualify for the 16yr age level.

If it's just for a few seconds worth of cut scenes then I doubt it would be worth it. But yeah, it's annoying just to be aware of.

But it's interesting to notice the differences of the markets. Americans and violence do seem to go hand in hand. :(

The way things seem to be going in the UK I wouldn't be surprised to see a slow creep in what what is now censored from the different age rating restrictions.

The sooner more reasoned minds start taking positions of political power the better.

5-10 seconds? I'm curious, but it's not going to deter me. I wonder if this affects the Aussie version, considering it's been rated R18+...

5 to 10 seconds? ITs gotta be either a brutal violence scene or as Spock once said ... "colourful metaphors". But Europe pretty much has both compared to North America. Got my interest... for about 5 to 10 seconds.

Keep playing!

btw, I'm downloading the Beyond Two Souls demo from US PSN right now. I notice it has a Mature rating.

Here's hoping for some sweet graphics.
It'll be a good 'here's Heavy Rain WITHOUT the aid of significant Cell processor implementation and here's Beyond WITH the aid of significant Cell processor implementation.'

(wishes I had one finger touchscreen =p )

Finished the demo. It's cool stuff. I'm more liking to the Xmen-paranormal story than the child kidnapping stuff of HR so that's a plus. I hope it allows for foreign language so my home doesn't have to hear the F-bomb dropped every minute.
But while it's a strong production ultimately this sort of thing is being marketed to an audience of gamers. I feel pretty dang sure it's going to get slammed in a few ways, namely control wise and game play wise, by some for being so un-gamer vested. Sure we like to believe gamers are becoming more interested in interactive movies and all but when 99.9% of this culture is straight up games, games with plots. I feel this example of being neither here nor there is going to hold it back in some regard both critically and sales wise. Oh well. Let's hope I'm wrong =)

oh great its TLOU all over again!
sigh, oh well at least $ony had the decency to tell everyone this time.
though they kinda dont have a choice after the blowout that caused.

in all honesty though, whys this being censored?
so the gore and violence is worse than GOW3s ok im going to rip your head off with my bare hands in slow motion extreme closeup with copious amounts of blood, gore, and hanging tendons?
or worse than GTAVs torture scene?
seriously?
i find that VERY hard to believe!
christ, and here i was thinking that this BS was finally behind us that we got a R18 rating.
now were the ones being held back by the rest of the world.
FU*K!
