Last Guardian Not On "Hiatus," Is Being "Re-Engineered"

The term "re-engineering" is worrisome, but at least it's not as bad as "canceled."

According to a recent GamesIndustry.biz interview with Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, The Last Guardian is apparently undergoing a reconstructing process of some kind.

He was asked to clarify the "hiatus" statement made by SCEA president Jack Tretton and Yoshida said that was somewhat misleading. Here's what he had to say:

"Hiatus, I never… It was Jack Tretton! He used that term, and I said no, hiatus is misleading. It was a hiatus in terms of releasing new information. The game has never stopped--the team has always been here. They're going through the reengineering of the game, so the team size is smaller, because it's more engineering focused right now."

As for a release date, Yoshida unfortunately said that he "cannot talk about it." He added that they're still waiting for the right time to reintroduce the game "in an appropriate way." Maybe we shouldn't be too concerned, though, because he said the game remains in development and that it's well-staffed. Fumito Ueda is still working on it (even though he's no longer a Sony employee) and maybe, just maybe, it'll be revealed as a PS4 exclusive soon. That would only make sense.

No, Yoshida didn't add that last bit. I did. Because I'm very hopeful.

Let's not get this team confused with GarbageEnix. Sure it has taken forever but I'm sure when this releases it'll be better than anything SE has released this whole generation.

So that's re-engineering for PS4 obviously. They shouldn't announce games that are 1/50th complete anymore.

Sorry but I lost interest.

No question it's for PS4. I strongly suspect they are reprogramming it from the ground up, because something was clearly fundamentally broken with the earlier version.

I'm still happy this game is under development. No one likes a years long delay but a) they didn't give up even though it makes less and less business sense to keep sinking resources into it, which is awfully cool, and b) they recognized the game was broken, and rather than put out a crap, disappointing game, they went back to the drawing board. I can get behind that.

You can just imagine him cursing Tretton to the heavens there, can't you? Good to know, but I'll get excited when Sony decide that it's time to re-announce it properly with an actual scheduled launch timeframe this time.

They brought in Sledgehammer Games to help re-engineer.
Look forward to some exhilarating FPS boy vs. gryphon action!

you most likely dont know about it because they announced it when the ps3 came out and then it was almost never talked about again.

Doubt that if it does release it will go for a lot once the initial supply runs out. Before digital download and the Ico PS3 physical Bundle game out like-new conditions of Ico were selling for $50-100+ and Shadow of the Colossus was easily going for around $50. Though maybe team Ico will have finally learned to send out more than a handful of copies this time around.
