On A Scale Of 10, Rate Rockstar's Efforts With GTA Online

The significant, troubling issues Grand Theft Auto Online has faced since the day of its launch have dominated headlines.

Developer Rockstar has called these issues "inevitable" and warned everyone ahead of time that they should expect some "growing pains." They've also responded quickly to the problems and with a big patch already available, many are applauding Rockstar's efforts.

Are you one of them? Do you believe the developer did a good job in resolving the current issues and vowing to keep chipping away at lingering problems? And do you agree that given the sheer size and scope of GTAO, those annoying - even crippling - issues really were "inevitable?" There are some who are leaning in the other direction, who say that if Rockstar was anticipating such problems, they should've taken bigger strides to correct them before the GTAO launch. However, the other side will say that a developer can't plan for everything, and can only wait until the players begin to play before the designers can act.

For my part, I have never understood the appeal of massive online multiplayer worlds, although I accept that I'm in the minority. I'm too old-school in that I want my games to work and I want them to work right out of the gate, and all the time. Having something be virtually unplayable when it first arrives doesn't make the process any more appealing. And of course, you'll never fix everything and at any given time, something else could break on you. I guess the experience has to be that amazing for players to put up with such gigantic amounts of crap, but I'm just not seeing the attraction. Way too many ongoing issues.

Again, though, that's me.

I don't have it so my opinion doesn't really matter but I think things should work right away. People babying overseers of catastrophic failures because it's status quo doesn't help. If you can't deliver it all at once then do it a bit at a time.

The most shameful thing is it was delayed so they would get their high review scores, cuz it clearly wasn't delayed in order to make it ready.

"If you can't deliver it all at once then do it a bit at a time."
That's what I think they should have done. I can't for the love of anything holy understand why these kind of services are launched for all at once with seemingly no staging at all.

I think they did poorly. It seems that the problem isn't everyone jumping at once, the problem seems to come from the tutorial. It doesn't connect you to other players which creates problems. It has little to do with everyone jumping at once and more to do with connecting to other players. The first race from the tutorial is just the beginning, later on you may encounter problems if you do missions. For now I'm avoiding doing missions. Everything seems fine following this path.

Rockstar should have given us more updates on progress. It doesn't take much to write a simple article giving us the status of the situation. They could have handled this better. The game is delayed months, and the multiplayer comes out 2 weeks after launch of the game.

Like someone said, Rockstar is too worried about leaks in their games,, what they should have done is put those worries aside and should have made a beta to stress test the servers. Over all this is unacceptable. 3/10

I read that GTAO has been in the works since gta3. The fact the launch was horrible, and the fact they made 600 million over quota, is ridiculous. Its also sad it took so long to make it work for many players on both consoles. Theres no excuse.

When it comes to the handling of the servers and what-not, 3/10. But R* isnt the only company thats failed online launch this year so maybe i should cut them some slack.

When it comes to the actual GTAO, 9/10. So much fun to be had. I used to think Saints Row 2 was the best open world do whatever you want game but GTAO blows it out of the water. There is some issues but i can't really think of anything game breaking or overly annoying. Besides Semeon.

The online is awesome, when you are lucky enough to play it. I reached level ten only to start it again and find im back to scratch; no money, no weapons. So disappointing. I decided to trade it on for another game.

Well I would say from the outside they are probably working their asses off. However, it obviously wasn't ready and thats poor on their part. This is their responsibility to deliver a solid product and its far from it.

I dont know that id give them a pass on their efforts mainly because they shouldnt be doing an damage control. Yet, here we are despite a massive update that made some things worse, so Im hearing.

A lot of people are defending this as if its a server issue, as in an overload, but its very apparent its just broken.

I stand by the my thought that this was delayed in order for the retail version to get the review scores it has, knowing the online portion just wasn't ready. That me is shameful and makes R*'s efforts less meaningful. I say re-evaluate the game now.

I'd give them a 4 and that's being generous. As mentioned above, the very first tutorial mission sometimes wouldn't trigger or would hang on an infinite loading screen and that's if you could get in at all. Yes, they announced ahead of the launch that there were problems but that only means that they went live KNOWING how broken the online was. Even worse, at the very beginning you actually could buy their in-game funny money. That was taken down pretty quickly, but was it done out of concern for the customer or fear about what government regulators would do when the weapons, cars and property people had purchased vanished into the ether? You would have to believe that they tested it, but if that's the case then how did all of these very obvious problems slip through?

I must say that I am a bit miffed that I didn't get to do anything with GTAO before my PS3 YLODed, but I still applaud Rockstar's efforts in working feverishly at getting things taken care of. I must wonder, though, why they even bothered launching it when it had so many problems. Either way... I have to withhold a tangible opinion until I can actually get into it.

Haven't played it - you should all know my reason by now, but my opinion is that R* screwed up on a scale as large as that of FFXIV, Diablo 3, SimCity and other such failures. Having a game that doesn't work on day one, no matter what it is or what the reasons are, is simply unacceptable. Sure, fixes can be delivered to most people quickly and simply, but that's a damned weak excuse for putting out a product that doesn't work. I really hate the complacency that abounds when this kind of thing happens. Just a good thing that it isn't yet prevalent in SP games.

i dont understand why every one is so negative about all of this. the single player game is amazing. i do agree they held the multiplayer back to not get hurt in reviews. it also wasnt ready. but they have done such a great job with this game. the online is being worked on. after a month it may be problem free totally.

maybe its because there is not much else to complain about.

anyone know about the ifruit app coming to the vita or android?

I just wanna say that I hereby retract my earlier defense of Rockstar in regards to the launch of this online service. The issues seem to reach deeper than what one must expect at launch of a new online service.

It is next to impossible to do a proper, closed test and simulate a load that is equal of millions of users world wide connecting at the same time. It just can't be done.

But they should have had *some* experience in building online services now.

The way I see it, the game didn't need the online to be appealing.

I mean I personally give their efforts an 8 or a 9, it wasn't perfect at launch but I'd make the case that the longevity the online play will bring adds to the value of the game.

They are going to keep patching the game. Call of Duty gets an update on a regular basis. Doesn't bother me. If things are messed up, it's all good as long as you fix it. If it isn't working I'll just go back to single player to get 100% Completion.

Doing everything in a game is the point of playing. I can't help but think that way. The online mode is a journey to max complete my profile the same as my cod profile.

The more a game makes me want to play it, the better it is. Sure it's inconvenient that there are glitches but I'm just not convinced that they should get flack for it.

Online play is extra on this game. I paid for Arkham City, it doesn't have online play. GTA V is worth itself with just single player. I get a pretty good deal with an online play that I'm trying to share with Call of Duty. As long as they keep fixing issues I'm good with them.

R* held off from turning on GTAVO so it would'nt affect review scores?

imo, any developer/publisher would do the same

at this point im glad i didnt fall for the hype machine that was Grand Theft Auto 5. From what i've been reading and people complaining about on my friends list I'll be waiting till this game hits under twenty dollars used or maybe a Ps4 version if Rockstar makes one. To me GTA as a series is Dead The last good game was GTA: San Andras (ya ik probably spelled wrong)

They delayed the release of GTAV by four or five months to work out the kinks. They should have done the same with GTA Online.

For the online play, it's good to hear that right away R* is working on the troubled issues. I understand the frustration, but you have to understand it's online internet required to play, there is always bound to have some faulty issues.

A point for the patch update.
A point for making it enjoyable.
A point for the new stuff they have added.
A point for saying they are going to keep updating it.

Points lost for not releasing it launch day. Not everyone would have jumped on the servers as some people would prefer to start into the SP first.

Major points lost for the iPhone only app. Two weeks later and still no way for Android or in game to work it. All I want is the customisable number plate to make the car my own. couldn't care less about training the dog. I can get a tamagotchi for that if I wanted too.

Points lost for the lack of written updates. One bland blanket statement of ' we are working on it and will be available soon.' just isnt good enough.

Overall, I really am enjoying this game. Glad my friend made me change my mind and buy it just for the SP alone.

WoW well IMO... Imma give them a 9, i would have gave them a 10 but i know people who lost created charcters NOT once but multiple times. I gave them this high of a score because NO ONE has every made a game of this Caliber to be played online with a record selling crowd ALL trying to create and play @ the same time.

GTA:O is incredibly ambitious. This isn't a half assed multiplayer tacked onto a single player game *cough* God of War *cough*
They could have held off releasing it for a year (smooth out the bug) and sold it as a standalone game and it would have been worth every $60. Fact is when it works its damn good. Rockstar tossed it in for free.

They should have had a open beta or they should have called the current build a "beta."
