Ubisoft: GTAV Impact "Generally Positive"

The face of the industry changes when a mega blockbuster like Grand Theft Auto V hits.

There are positive and negative impacts, of course, and Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explains how such mammoth releases can be a double-edged sword. Still, there's a "general positive" impact simply because of the exhibited quality.

During an earnings call that talked about the company's downgraded financial expectations due to the delay of Watch Dogs and The Crew, Guillemot discussed the GTA effect:

"Each time there's a megablockbuster that takes lots of sales, it has an impact around it for sure. There's a positive and negative effect. The positive one is that it's actually pushing lots of players to come back to their machine and play."

Of course, it can also hurt the sales of other games, which is the negative that Ubisoft undoubtedly has considered. Even so, Guillemot believes that because GTAV is such a "good quality game," that will have far-reaching positive implications on both future Rockstar games and even titles from other developers. Quality begets quality is a common theory and one with which I definitely agree.

It is too bad that we'll have to wait for Watch Dogs but Ubisoft says they delayed it simply because it wouldn't meet our expectations if it released next month. Well then, go ahead and take the time to make it something special. We don't wanna be disappointed after GTAV, after all.

You also don't want to release a similar genre game around the same time, in this case sandbox. People like to mix it up.

I feel like every game is similar to any other game of the same genre. Not enough changes.

In as much as I am in the minority, and then some, in regards to GTA which for me has not appeal.... why does it make me worry that all theses devs will think, well sandbox worlds sell so maybe all of our games should be the same.

Some may not think that is bad, but to me the story in GTA is kind cliche and weak. As was Skyrim and I enjoyed that game regardless with all its faults.

I could be just a tad cynical, really?, but hopefully I am wrong. I mean, IF the industry decides that a game is an open world scenario now as well has to be online, I hope the story tellers don't lose their jobs, but get on board to make some really interesting stories for us, me, single players in these open worlds. And I don't mean just trophies for waterskiing or bowling. I would rather do those in the REAL world... well bowling anyway. :/

Keep playing!

I am totally ok with the delay to be honest. Although I don't have much on my plate for this generation I already have pre-orders piling up for the next one. Pretty confident I will enjoy the little extra time. On top of which a hyper-saturated market is never a good thing. I haven't even looked at GTAO yet ...
