Infinity Ward Explains Why Call Of Duty Can't Really Change

Sports games can't really change their established rules. And neither can shooters, so says Infinity Ward.

In a recent OXM interview, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin said Call of Duty really can't change much from year to year, because you "can't change too many of the core rules." Said Rubin:

"There is the obvious truth that if this were football, and next year they decided we only want seven players a side and you can use your hands, I don't think people would want to go to many of those games.

So we can't change too many of the core rules, and the core rules are really simple. You're a player, it's in first-person, you have a weapon in your hand, and you run around shooting other people."

Rubin added that they "can play a lot with the outside of how that works," and that includes tweaking character customization, improving the immersion with more realism, new modes, new dynamic maps, etc. But for the most part, they can't really stray from the beaten path too much. And you know, of course he's right. You don't fiddle with a billion-dollar formula, do you? I sure wouldn't.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be ready to go on current-gen consoles and the PC on November 5, and it'll be a launch title for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Except there are a lot of things that are broken with the multiplayer on a technical level. From the messed up matchmaking, to the busted respawn, to the quickscoping, the aim assist exploits, the interpolation, the hit boxes, hit registration....gosh just everything about how you go about actually shooting someone is so broken.

Now most casual fans wont notice this because they play it like a run and gun game, and believe me most don't even realize the insane amount of aim assist in the game, and many deny it exists....which is hilarious there are videos showing it.

Anyway it is broke and it does need fixing at least in the MP department.

Deny it all you want, but ALL Great companies do it i.e God of War, Uncharted, BF, Killzone. You will always see something that was recycled in a sequel Period, End of Story, Get Over it People.

Yes but it would be nice if they didn't recycle the broken bits of the game and used all that money they make on this franchise and put some of it you know back into the game instead of putting most of it towards marketting and PR.

Multiplayer has been broken on a technical level since MW2. However it makes the game more casual so maybe they are going to keep it this way.

That's many of the reasons why I still play COD3 mp, still has problems but not nearly as bad as the later COD's. Still matches going on but it's weak.

Hes 100 percent correct. Most shooters offer the same type of gameplay. Where Call of Duty faulters though is where games like BF and KZ shine in the immersion and technicalities. Call of Duty needs an upgrade tp its core gameplay it needs a wax and it also needs some fine tuning. Otherwise sure we are all playing the same gameplay.

I love Call of Duty. Huge fan. I took a break for awhile after Black Ops 2. Recently I had an urge to play it and I was really excited so I popped it in. After 45 minutes or so I was no longer emmersed like I once was. I no longer felt like playing like I used to because Ive played the same game year after year. It needs to go back to Modern Warfare roots and rebuild on that foundation.

"Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward has suggested that the people most engaged with the franchise aren't really gamers at all, as they don't play any titles that aren't affiliated with the series."

This was spot on.

It's probably the dumbest quote I've seen from a dev this entire year. I'm glad Ben just ignored that part.

I thought the other part was more newsworthy.

However, there is some truth to that. I have found that a LOT of people are just casual gamers who really don't play anything but Call of Duty and maybe a few sports games here and there.

No brainer.

THANK GOD there are other developers creating different games other than CoD or BF type games or the gaming industry would quite literally incredibly boring and not really an industry or evolving (well a snails pace at least).

Keep playing!

Sounds like an excuse for releasing the same game every year with different packaging.

COD4 was innovative, I enjoyed MW2 and I believe it peaked with Black Ops. I just don't appreciate a company treating me like I'm an idiot and that's what Activision is doing with the COD. Each new release the single player gets shorter, that multiplayer maps become smaller and simpler, and we are subjected to a marketing campaign that shows "in game footage" which are cinematic cut scenes and developers advertising advances to the game engine that has fish move out of your way.

Fact is Activision pisses on you and tells you it's rain.

not saying to completely change everything in the game. all i want is to put some more of those bags of money they got for overcharging for their game and actually make one that is more than a game with minor improvements as the previous one. the fact that hes comparering it to a sports game shows me what his mindset is. new game engine would be nice. maybe some destuctible environment, doesnt have to be battlefield level type stuff. not sure if its on dedicated servers now. just something to make the game worth the full price purchase again and not the minor improvements.

I'm only asking this because I happen to miss the genre but has any mega fps franchise ever had light gun compatibility or the ps move? For my money that would be really fun. I always crave that lethal enforcer virtua cop style arcade mode. Essentially if they made s gunslinger mode like call of Juarez I think I misu catch on.

They can't change too much because that would require them to go back and rethink their core mechanics. These games have a two year development cycle and there's no room for innovation or mixing things up. Anything that slows the treadmill is to be avoided. It was cute of him to portray the unchanging nature of the series as an advantage, though.

Okay... no. You can still change the way the game plays fundamentally. Wanna know how? Set it in the American Civil War with period weaponry and tactics. Drop the bombast and make a story about an ordinary guy picking up a gun and shooting people for the first time. Make an FPS RPG where the character's speed, stamina, aiming ability and steadiness, etc, etc, improve over time.

These guys are just making excuses to keep doing the same damn thing.

The Civil War? Son, thank goodness you are in no position to make any kind of decisions on any game ever because for you to act like you dropped the mic on some amazing idea here...I'm befuddled. 20 million plus puchase these games every year and isn't everyone sayind devs should be loyal to what fans want? As PC Max said above, there are plenty other devs with entirely unique takes on the FPS gener. Don't expect or demand CoD to change. Just buy something else.

Kid, I'm not demanding CoD change... I'm just saying that the statements made by Rubin in the interview cited above are nothing more than a set of excuses to keep doing the exact same thing. And these may not be great ideas, but they're the kinds of FPS that I'd be interested in playing - something a bit more thoughtful and visceral than high-tech whack-a-mole.

And believe me, on the rare occasion that I do buy an FPS, it is something that aims to be different. What happens to CoD and Battlefield doesn't really interest me, but I find it amusing to highlight foolishness in statements like this.

It would be more like, a car company releasing the same car every year with the difference being that it looked slightly different, and they never fixed any of the problems that the car before it had.

His sport analogy is poor, and while it is always going to be an FPS, it doesn't excuse the fact that they are only just adding dedicated servers, and that the hit boxes are still garbage, and that the stories are always riddled with plot holes, the interp is a joke, quick scoping is a mess, etc etc.

Most people don't want them to "change" everything, they just want improvements on the things that have been broken since MW2.

I doubt anyone expected them to turn it into a turn based RPG, but when you are the most successful videgame of all time it would be nice to see more money go back into the game instead of to the shareholders.

People who work at Activision/Infinity Ward/Treyarch or EA walk around screwing people over, with a large wad of cash in their debit card, and get praised. People like David Cage try and do something different, and gets made fun of. CoD is worth quite a bit of money, and the fact they try so little to make a game that splits it from everything else making it WORTH that money is beyond me.

This is America, we're supposed to get what we paid for. 60$ gives us games like Bioshock Infinite. And comparing it to football is almost accurate. In football you watch a bunch of guys play with balls all day while getting sweaty in the process. Playing CoD is much the same. But instead of balls its kill streaks and rage.

I hate dumbasses who hate Call of Duty. It is a fantastic game. More of the same, sure, but when it is good it is good. These are the same people that would play Uncharted 24 and, well, it just aint worth it.

They give their fans the product they love and crave, warts and all. The fact that each game is just new maps and weapons doesn't phase the fans. I personally love new maps and weapons - The $110 a year I pay for the game and maps is a steal considering the amount of enjoyment I get playing it.

If this makes me less sophisticated than other gamers - well I guess I'll just have to find a way to live with myself ...

The fact that the hardcore mob hate the franchise is an irrelevance to Activision as their loyal fans vastly outnumber the dissenters.

If you truly love the franchise then you should be just as disgusted that Activision is running it to the ground, at the expense of it's developers I might add. Treyarch made some fine non COD games. Infinity Ward has been completely gutted. All so Activision can keep churning out the same product with different packaging.

They could easily support Black Ops II with another year of DLC and give the franchise a much needed break. Come back with a fresh game engine for next gen consoles and essentially create some hunger for the franchise again.

But that's not Activision's way. They see $ and run it into the ground. Look at World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero, Skylander... If it makes them money they ride the horse till it dies and screw the people that made them a successful franchise.
