Infinity Ward Explains Why Call Of Duty Can't Really Change
Sports games can't really change their established rules. And neither can shooters, so says Infinity Ward.
In a recent OXM interview, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin said Call of Duty really can't change much from year to year, because you "can't change too many of the core rules." Said Rubin:
"There is the obvious truth that if this were football, and next year they decided we only want seven players a side and you can use your hands, I don't think people would want to go to many of those games.
So we can't change too many of the core rules, and the core rules are really simple. You're a player, it's in first-person, you have a weapon in your hand, and you run around shooting other people."
Rubin added that they "can play a lot with the outside of how that works," and that includes tweaking character customization, improving the immersion with more realism, new modes, new dynamic maps, etc. But for the most part, they can't really stray from the beaten path too much. And you know, of course he's right. You don't fiddle with a billion-dollar formula, do you? I sure wouldn't.
Call of Duty: Ghosts will be ready to go on current-gen consoles and the PC on November 5, and it'll be a launch title for the PS4 and Xbox One.
