One Part Of Black Flag's Single-Player Requires Online Pass

Basically, the Online Pass is pretty self-explanatory:

If you want to enjoy the online portion of a game, you either have to purchase the game new (new copies include a code for the Online Pass), or you have to buy the Pass separately. But what business does the Pass have in dictating certain parts of the single-player experience?

According to Game Informer, players will have to have a Uplay Passport if they wish to enjoy the Kenway's Fleet mini-game in the campaign. Kenway's Fleet lets you send assassins-in-training on various missions in the hopes that they bring back some loot. It's a variation of past mechanics that have allowed your assassin prodigies to earn experience. It's all about ships in ACIV.

So why is it only available to those who have a Passport? Well, basically because if your Friends are also playing the game and tackling missions, missions you undertake can be completed faster. It's not a bad idea but in my eyes, it's just another example of so-called "connectivity" invading the single-player space. For my part, I've never activated the Uplay Passport in any AC, 'cuz it's useless to me, and I don't feel like having my progress tracked for any reason.

Now, it seems I'll have no choice if I want to experience all that Black Flag offers...in the single-player offline mode. Whatever.

I thought Uplay was... okay for giving you extra skins, increased inventory, etc.. but this?

Makes me wonder with all the so called rumors going around about MS and Sony network not ready yet that on the other side due to the DRM changes that certain devs upset about DRM are trying other ways to subtly alter... out mind sets and get what they want.

Another reason I cannot be bothered with any online passes.

Bewildered! Keep playing!

I used to think it was funny and to my friends, called it:

'Ass Greed [insert sequel numbers]' for short.

I was young okay.

Really. All this disdain over a mini game? It looks to be the most tedious and unfun part of the whole game (outside of eavesdropping missions). When I saw it in a review I wondered how I could bypass it altogether - now I know! I'm actually grateful I won't have to do that part - and if I decide later I want to? Oh no! I've got to do the free thing they gave me included in the game!

I just don't understand the hysteria on this one. Enlighten me, please!

If it's anything like the past systems of sending out assassins for the sake of money and experience, it's absolutely essential for those who want to experience most of the game. It's not tedious at all, as you're not controlling any of it; you're just giving orders.

Thank you, Ben for the answer. That makes more sense than what I saw.

I prefer being enlightened rather than just getting a thumbs down! Much appreciated.

hmmm, yah, don't like the idea of connectivity becoming too pervasive in single player content. Sure, this is a small example, but it may be inroads to nastier implementations in the future.

In the meantime enjoy this info about AC4.

No one makes 'em like Ubisoft makes 'em =p

Well, that left me dizzy!

Also, is PSXEXTREME going to review this game? Has anyone at the site played the PS4 version? Is it worth waiting for???

I don't know what PSXe plans to do but other sites suggest AC4 is worth waiting to play on PS4. This is especially the case because the $10 upgrade deal doesn't include transferring your save.

Dude, the AI in every AC game has that problem and 10,000 more. People just refuse to recognize it.

AC3 was easily the worst I've encountered, bug wise. While this event being showed here for AC4 is crappy, I've read several reviews that claim it's far improved over AC3's problems. Furthermore, AC4 appears to be more cohesive as a game all around. I sort of want it sooner than normal to feel all in the 'next-gen' zone with everyone else =p

It's different, but in GT5 you could sort of do this with your B-spec drivers. You put them on online status, and depending on their usage from your friends, you can get quiet a bit of money or B-spec XP back.

and people wonder why the indie movement has literally exploded in the past year or so.
publishers really are the devils work, we really need to go to self or customer funded.
put the power into the consumers hand, not into the hands of those greedy clueless f*cks!
as the saying goes, this is what happens when you let a suit make the decisions........
