Schilling: Kingdoms Of Amalur IP Is A "Billion-Dollar Franchise"

Former 38 Studios IPs will be auctioned off on December 11, with proceeds going to the state of Rhode Island. This is the result of the collapse of the aforementioned studio, which left the state on the hook for many, many millions.

There's no knowing how much those IPs will go for, although we have heard that major players in the gaming industry (pun intended) are interested. Even so, they may not go for what 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling thinks they're worth.

That's because, according to a recent Tweet, the former Boston Red Sox ace believes that Kingdoms of Amalur is a billion-dollar opportunity:

"If someone were to buy Amalur, put team back on it, it's a billion dollar franchise. 2 years later and still no ones done what we we're doing."

Uh...what were you doing that we've never seen before? Reckoning wasn't a bad game at all, but I don't remember it doing anything particularly innovative or evolutionary. And Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has predicted that Project Copernicus, the MMO 38 Studios never finished, might be worth $20 million. That's a far cry from $1 billion.

I mean, I know this guy needs money, but who the hell thinks the Amalur IP, Copernicus included, is worth a billion damn dollars?

Guess I was one of the few that thought it was a fairly boring RPG. More like for beginners, then a seasoned RPG player.

Nah I thought it was fun. I'm definitely not a beginner.

It definitely has potential to go somewhere, but calling it a "billion-dollar opportunity" would convince someone he took a steroid-laced baseball to the forehead. Even some of the most promising RPGs have fallen by the wayside while garbage like FFXIII rises up.

Really should get to Amalur at some point... but a billion dollars for it is way off, no matter how invested you are in the franchise. A single moderately well received title does not put it at the same level of CoD or GTA.

hey, cant blame the guy from embellishing a little.
after all, calling it a massive money pit is not exactly a great sales pitch.
hopefully someone does pick it up and give it the attention it deserves, its really the only game that captured the true fantasy environment so well.

The game did give the impression of being built on a solid code base though. It really ran very smooth.

You thought so? I thought it looked quite good actually, especially some of the areas (that "home base area" to that blue race comes to mind, you arrive there pretty early in the game).

Also the battle mechanics were pretty darn solid as well, responsive and precise, well animated and sweet effects too, increasingly so when you earned some levels.

While I agree that it's definitely not worth that now, maybe he meant potentially in the long run. You know if someone bought it and continued to make games, then perhaps when kingdoms 5, 6, or 7 came out.

His comment reminds me of the show sharktank, people coming in and giving ridiculous evaluations of their "companies."

i remember being really excited to try the demo out when it landed. I remember the rumors, "an Elder Scrolls killer" etc
The demo just disgusted me for being not even close. The game was lucky to have sold what it had.

Ah you only played the demo? That explains a lot. Since when did a demo do any game justice, really.

this game was very detailed and had the best fighting system I ever played in a RPG. It was a fantastic game. One of the best solo RPGS I have ever played.

It had THE BEST expansions EVER. Not even close for me.

As far as some of you on this who didn't like it, I swear that either A: The few of you that actually post are in in fact the same two people who run this place(rofl) or B: the biggest bunch of yes men I have ever seen, looking for attention.

My bet is A: MUAHAHAHAHA!

Kingdoms of Amalur should be picked up, definitely!

End of line.
