From Software Says No To Dark Souls II Microtransactions And DLC

Although the current industry trend seems to lean toward more downloadable content and microtransactions, one developer has no interest in either. Well, good.

From Software is currently working on the anticipated Dark Souls II, and producer Takeshi Miyazoe made one thing abundantly clear during a new Edge interview: No microtransactions, thank you.

"Yeah, right! Not yet, and not for a while I think. It’s one of our bigger IPs right now, but it’s a new IP, so I think it’s too young to go free-to-play. And with Dark Souls I think it would be hard to monetise in that way. Pay per death? That would be terrible. From Software especially don’t want to allow players to pay for an advantage."

Miyazoe is a firm believer of games being complete experiences without additions, kinda like the way it was in the good 'ol days. He added that he doesn't even expect the upcoming sequel to have any DLC, because they want to deliver a "full game." He finished by saying something a great many gamers are likely to agree with:

"Buy the package and you’ll get the full experience, and you’ll have as much fun as anybody else. Spending a couple dollars on certain items does not help the experience. So no free-to-play yet!"

Yup. I'm down with that. For more information, check out our recent Dark Souls II preview.

You just made my night man. I remember being so psyched about this game and I literally forgot about it. Thanks

I'm pretty sure that's what they said about Dark Souls 1 but they still ended up making DLC.

I agree but was one of those times DLC was handed well, they weren't selling it on the pstore before the game was released (something I absolute hate) and when you finished the game it felt like a complete experience, I don't remember when the dlc was released but almost all people that bought the game already finished it when rumors about the dlc started to appear on the internet.

Yeah I was waiting for someone to bring this up.

The DLC for Dark Souls came out well after, and it was in most of the fans minds, a real expansion. It didn't add anything to the end of the story it was more of a backstory and lore expansion.

It was well thought out, and partly because the fans wanted more. We got our PC port, and they decided to make the DLC as well.

I wouldn't mind if they did the same thing for this. Wait a year and release a good DLC pack.

They still offered a complete package tho .They started working on it a good while after the game released .

So nothing was cut so they could make people pay more money for the missing parts .

Yet... I really don't like that "yet". Good to know, though, especially in light of pretty much everything adding F2P elements these days.
Maybe you could buy a set number of automatic resurrections or souls for a dollar. It's not difficult to imagine how it could work, but just... no.

These guys know what gamers want. Its funny too because DLC and micros aren't usually for the gamer, they are there for the gullible and to make more money.

That being said I'm aware that they said the same thing for Dark Souls one and they ended up doing DLC.

Well that DLC was handled really well, and was released about a year after.

Its planned DLC I have a problem with. Making a game, and saying okay we will release DLC for 6-12 months after the game releases to boost sales, and income then release a new game.

Because that DLC could just be in the first game and the second game for entry price.

They made it work during the PS1 and PS2 era, they can make it work again >.<

From Software knows how to handle DLC, the new cut scene for the boss fight with Sith anyone.
Any way it will be Namco pushing for DLC.

It's a sad state of affairs that such a common sense notion is startling.
