Which Established Franchise Should Be Mercifully Laid To Rest?

There are some franchises that gamers see as beyond saving. Or maybe it's just a series that has gone on for so long that we're all sick to death of it.

Do you think such a franchise exists? Has a certain IP simply overstayed its welcome? Which is the one that is running on fumes? Which won't benefit from a fresh coat of paint?

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that above all else, game developers do want to create new things. On the other hand, if the market demands repeat performances of successful productions, that's what publishers want. And if that's what publishers want, that's what developers need to make. Unless a studio is inherently wealthy, they need the help of a publisher, yes? Ironically, the same people that complain about the situation are part of the same group that dictates the situation: The consumers.

So, if there is a series that you believe needs to disappear, why? Is it something consumers simply don't want anymore? Or has the publisher misread consumer interest? Is the quality of the IP dropping and is there no easy fix? I find it difficult to bid farewell to established franchises that have delivered so much joy to so many. But all things run their course and eventually, you just have to accept that the series in question isn't what it once was. It's just disappointing on all fronts and so, maybe it should be laid to merciful rest... Better than painfully struggling on, isn't it?

What leaps to mind?

It really saddens me how even a repetitive opinion gets harassed by the lot of you here.

Thought to escape this behavior only to see you lot reacting to it... *sigh*.

On topic: Call of Duty, but a reboot, because there needs to be a sub par modern shooter with at least an intriguing single player campaign.

Oh I know. It was a jab at ethird. It's fine because he likes to get us riled up and enjoys our insults. It's all good.

It is easy to get all that stuff without a guide, though. I just don't believe someone like him took the time to do it. If you fly between the chocobo farm and the chocobo guru up north, you eventually are told pretty much exactly what to do. It's just a lot of annoying get in airship, fly, talk, rinse and repeat.

Chocobilly gets super excited and keeps telling you to go back for more info, so it's just an issue of whether or not you fly all over the world and decide to land at the guru's house.

The game gives you what you need to know in order to get a golden chocobo through the guru, and certainly how to get the river or mountain ones for all rare material except knights of the round. The only thing that is vague is how to train your chocobo. (You do so through races, but even that you can figure out based on their C,B, or A ranking) Even getting the carob nut is told, as it's "past the greenlands at the border of the forest".

It shouldn't be an annualized franchise. It could become the next Guitar Hero and overstay its welcome. And if that happens, then UbiSoft is going to be forced to put it to rest for a while.

It's the annualization that broke that franchise. Had those games had at least three years between them, they would have been a major event every single time.
Cause objectively speaking they are really good games. An open world sucker like myself should have totally *adored* them. But it's just way too much. I need to become hungry between the meals.

I dunno man, I think just about anything can be redeemed theoretically. Especially after Tomb Raider's amazing return.

Still a few stick out. I'd say Resident Evil is beyond saving. I know it'd make no business sense to end a franchise that still sells so well but it's just so pathetic what they are putting out. Making it Survival/horror again would make it a great game but then I suppose nobody would buy it. On that note Dead Space has to stop too before it gets worse.

I think the Kratos character's God of War franchise has to end. That's not to say it can't be reinvented in a new way but to keep making more in that universe with the big bad baldy is insulting to the legacy.

Resident Evil needs a complete reboot like nobody's business. I would love to see them just make a new story about a special forces unit that goes to investigate troubling reports from the outskirts of a small, Midwestern town... They could incorporate both the mansion and perhaps eventually let players explore Racoon City too, like you did in the beginning of RE2. It is such a great premise for a scary video game, they just need to ditch the awful baggage from recent entries (and the ludicrous plot twists) and start over. Tremendous potential there.

Madden. The series badly needs competition. NBA2K, NHL and MLB: The Show have zero competition but are always very good. Madden is blah every year. However, the game is geared more to casuals who don't care for game quality as much.

Can't really think of another series that needs to go on hiatus for a year or forever. I hope once Square Enix goes through the last vestiges of Wada's "legacy" we'll see a return to real Final Fantasy games.

Well, maybe Minecraft. Seems like kids enjoy this game for some reason. I have no idea what they see in this game. Never played it, doubt I'd get into it, doubt we need it.

Oh wow! No mention of any actual franchises!

Ben is leaving it to the readers to decide. Nicely done.

I think Final Fantasy is easily the first game that comes to mind. Resident Evil is starting to overstay its welcome too.

Halo was starting to become fatigued, but if 343 studios can hold off until Halo 5 on Xbox One, it should give people a long enough break.

Oh!!! Call of Duty!! Of course!!
Can someone at Activision give it a break, just for one year?!?! Last one I played was MW3, and that was just to see how the story ended. I didn't even touch the multiplayer. The franchise is starting to become fatigued though, no doubt. Ghosts still sold well, but not nearly as well as previous CoD installments.

I feel Assassins Creed should be on here, but it's only really had 2 weak entries in the entire series (Revelations and Liberation) while the rest were excellent!

Anyone agree with those choices? Or disagree?

I wouldn't want Final fantasy to end, I just want them to change it's direction. Same with Resident Evil. They changed both those franchises without there actually being a need to do so.

Call of Duty Ghosts is one of the weakest entries in the franchise, it feels SO crap to play it. It's been awhile since I've played a game and playing it felt like crap.

EDIT: I'm calling it now. When Activision reveal Call of Duty, they will talk about how amazing the NEW engine is and how awesome the game will be. Then disappoint us all.

After SE said it would take 10+ years to properly re-do FFVII, I realized that we will probably never get a FF game reminiscent of the PS1 days or earlier--but FFXV still has my interest so this franchise has at least 1 more chance.

Aside from that, the only franchise that really needs to stop is Street Fighter IV. I don't care if they want to just go ahead and build up some real changes and make a Street Fighter V, but the constant re-packaging is just ridiculous.

Well, if they build it and the gamers buy it, I guess the franchises will continue.

Not sure about ending certain franchises, but I think some may need to rest for a few years and the devs work on something else for a change. Down the road they can come back to the old franchise possibly with fresh minds and ideas and then revitalize it. These days it seems to be publishers and the like want to milk franchises for what they are worth.

Keep playing!

Yeah i think God of War needs to not necessarily die but go in a different direction. A reboot if you will. DMC and Tomb Raider were perfect examples of reboots done extremely well. GOW needs this desperately. Ascension, while good, just didn't cut the mustard. Snaaaaake you shut your mouth about fifa! LOL. J/K.

i've only played Fina Fantasy 7, my opinion is just based
on what i've read over time on this site about FF.

Final Fantasy, it be a blessing in disguise if FF were to end.

God of War, CoD, Assassins's Creed, Madden, pretty much all the mainstream sequels that appear every year. Time for some originality to come to the limelight again. It's beginning to get as bad as the movie industry.

As I've thought about it, I don't know that any franchise should be permanently retired. Take a break for a few years and just rethink everything that the franchise in question has to offer. Not only that, but don't make games for some mythical "broader appeal" demographic but make games that are meaningful for the devs and the audience will find them.
Annualization needs to go away permanently. Activision needs to stop mercilessly milking a handful of IPs, Ubisoft needs to figure out what direction they want to go with Assassin's Creed and think through the implications of the universe (the whole Abstergo Entertainment/John from IT plot was a bit meta) and EA should stop releasing the same sports games every year with minor tweaks (Madden/FIFA) and just go with $20 annual roster updates. Link that to a $5/month service that updates team performance in-game and you might have something.
In short, the major publishers and developers need to be a little more adventurous, a lot more restrained in budgeting and marketing and stop trying to chase trends.

Saints Row

This was a toss up between GTA and Saints Row, but SR got it. Tired of the hype around a game that turns every person who touches it into a teenager. Plus the type of humor the game promotes just brings the whole industry down.

IMO, Saints Row desperately needs a reboot, not a shutdown. They've taken it too far and got lost on only trying to overdo the wackiness and leave the rest just be.

They need to keep the core of the game and maintain the cheeky, immature style, but focus on enhancing other parts of the game, not just the wacky content.

seen good amount of comments & none said the franchise on my list..... Need For Speed . dunno what happen they been slipping for sometime & now i dont even see no Need For Speed DNA. series delivered classics & even Prostreet was decent. NFS is now Burnout & Ridge Racer combined. be real with u didnt spend much time with Burnout or Ridge Racer but at this stage they both have more value then NFS.

series doesnt need end but a serious nap or a need to go to sleep got work in the morning rest is due.
