New Ghosts Code Of Conduct Aims To Punish Offensive Behavior

If you've played Call of Duty online, you've probably come across some pretty disgusting language and behavior.

In order to tackle this seemingly growing problem, developer Infinity ward has published a new Code of Conduct for Call of Duty: Ghosts; it focuses on tamping down any and all "offensive behavior."

If someone uses aggressive, derogatory, or racially charged language, that player can be penalized. For the first offense, the user will receive a temporary ban, ranging between two days and two weeks. If the player does it again, he can either be temporarily banned again, or other bad things can happen: His split-screen privileges can be revoked, his stats can be reset, or he can be permanently banned from the leaderboards.

Permanent bans are reserved for different offenses, though. For instance, if you're caught with a pirated copy of the game, that's an automatic perm-ban. Same goes for any user caught hacking or modding the game for the sake of a competitive advantage. "Boosting" (exploiting the game to gain XP and other rewards) can result in temporary banning and stats resets.

Well, let's just hope this helps. It's getting pretty nasty online.

Or just do what most sensible people do - select "mute all but friends" - hey presto - sorted

Exactly, this is a pathetic and scary way of doing things. I fear for the future of MP gaming if censorship is going to be applied.

Scarily enough, a lot of people don't know the mute button exists.

Agreed LV.

I don't agree with this at all. If I'm playing a game where the sole objective is to murder other people than I should be able to say anything I want.

I tend to agree, but under corporate rule you don't get to be free. Maybe they should just separate out the nasty folks so they can play with each other.

Why would you need to use a racial/gay slur when playing a game? Freedom of speech only applies to the American government telling its citizens what it can or cannot say. Private companies are free to fire and restrict access to folks with thoughts the company does not feel represents their business.

jaybiv,

I'm well aware that a company is within its rights to limit the language used during the use of it's property. However as I already mentioned, if I'm murdering other people I fail to see the relevance in how offensive my language must be. Especially given how easy it is to mute anyone someone might find offensive.

There is no greater joy than trolling an entire server while getting drunk and telling children I'm going to fit them into a shoebox if they don't stop camping.

LV, I don't own Ghosts, but you and I need to play multiplayer together, sometime. I think you'd be a welcome addition to our group of flamers.

I don't own it either. The last game I "legally" owned in the series was COD4. I agree we should play some MP sometime! I don't really do that often on consoles though :(

I haven't done much PS3'ing lately, to be honest. I've been playing FFXIV on PC like a madman. Got a group of fellas that all play. We voice chat through google hangouts.

What server are you on? I haven't played in about a month. Took some time off (I was putting way too much time into the game) and I've been playing Resident Evil Revelations and PS2 RPGs.

We're on Malboro. We have a linkshell I think you'd enjoy. We regularly greet one another with sexual innuendo or just straight up call each other "s!uts".... which probably sounds awful, but it's pretty awesome.

They should send out letters to their parents regarding who should be playing Mature rated games, lol.

Bah, online gaming (specifically FPS gaming) wouldn't be the same without the underage twerps scattered across servers just waiting for my carnage.

this is funny their going to need to ban almost every player that has a Microphone
because their hasn't been a COD match ive watched from friends playing it without the F word being said

im going to say activision is going to give up this crusade because its already way to late especially with NA involved
because here in NA i don't think i know 1 person that doesn't use curse words in there daily lives so i wish activision the best of luck in their massive bans and hope it works

i have Faith they'll give up after the 5000th ban they give out

I thought that trash talking in the most offensive way possible was was the main reason people played that game.

Gotta hand it to Activision, doing something about this is actually something I would never have expected from them.

Hopefully 7 year olds will stop acting like 35 year olds who live with their mothers due to the fear of losing everything.

I thought CoD was the last acceptable place that you can say "faggot" anymore. I mean back in the 80's we said "faggot" so much that it wasn't even offensive and it certainly wasn't a gay slur. Now, it wads people's panties so quickly that even the 80's radio station here in Houston mutes out the word from Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing". I'm going to be very disappointed if I can't say, "All you garbage faggots need to get your moms to take you game back to Game Stop and exchange it for My Little Pony's Friendship Island. Call of Duty ain't for you."

How are they going to "prove" what you said anyway? Or is the accusation good enough. This does seem dumb when mute solves all your problems. Mute even solves the screaming kid in the background problem when there isn't necessarily any offensive language anyway.

"Brothers in Arms" - now that was an album. I have heard the 'offending' word edited out when Money or Nothing plays on the radio in Canada these days.

They've always had a code of conduct... and you've been able to report people for years now. And bans have already been given out in the past.

But unless you're planning on banning 85% of the CoD culture, it isn't going to do a thing.

As a fun test, make your emblem something that self-proclaims you as something typically discriminated against. See how long it takes before you get yelled at. One of my friends made his emblem say "Gay is OK" in rainbow colors. I would say -MOST- matches played, someone would either swear at him and say reallllly nasty things or try to cure him of his gayness. He isn't gay, so it never bothered him, but I would say CoD culture is a pretty awful thing. lol

Anyways, this is just a marketing thing for them. They've always done this, and it hasn't, nor will it do any good. Besides... there's a mute all function... Just use that.

I just think it's sad that it even has to get to this point. BF4 while somewhat flawed doesn't have near the amount of immature players. I never hear any $*** talking ever!!! like night and day compared to COD. Always has been.

How about banning the underaged players who shouldn't be playing the game?
