Kitase Won't Rule Out FFVII Remake

Yeah, I think we've heard this before. But is there hope...?

Whenever Square Enix was asked why they haven't produced a Final Fantasy VII remake, the answer was usually the same: They don't have the requisite manpower, time or budget.

That's essentially what FFVII director Yoshinori Kitase told Eurogamer in a new interview:

"I can honestly tell you I would love to do that. If you simply ask me if I personally would like to do that, yes I would. Definitely. There's no lie about it. But you must believe me when I say it would take a lot to happen."

Kitase reiterated the "staff availability and budget" issue, and he added that he just isn't motivated enough right now to take on the massive project. So, the staff, budget and motivation all need to be there, and Kitase says he doesn't know if "those three things will happen simultaneously." He finished:

"I won't rule out the possibility, but it would take a lot to make it happen."

He did say that if it were ever to happen, it would be the "biggest project" he'd ever done. "My life work," he added. Well, that sounds like a worthy endeavor, wouldn't you say?

He also says he'd love to do it, which gives me hope.

As long as he realizes that there is a demand for it out there, it will have to be done sooner or later. Technology is constantly getting better so it will (hopefully) be less and less of an issue making the remake.

What he meant to say is:

"As long as Toriyama stayed the hell away from it with his creepy Lightning obsession, I would love to remake FF7."

I'm not going to even hold my breathe on this. Past the point of caring for a remake. Sorry should have been done by now.

It's eventually going to happen. I'm fine with waiting. The longer we wait the better the technology. I'm also okay with it being discussed, pretty sure he was asked about it.

You sure "Square-Enix" in its current state will even be able to recreate such a great game? I mean they will have to consider the market and where gamers are when the time comes. Most turned based RPG's get a lot of flak these days for being too old school, sadly. Bravely Default is one of them, despite being a very fantastic game.

In its current state, no probably not. But I do believe eventually it will happen. How well they will do at recreating the same magic should be an interesting topic. Nothing will ever match the original so I'm at least realistic about the approach they take.

I've put over 20hrs into Bravely Default, such a fun game. It's just one of the reasons I find myself playing on handhelds when not using my PC/PS2.

They use the material system from FF 7 in FF 14 online. They also use the same theology of the power coming from the earth and blah blah that FF 7 used.

Could it be that maybe ..... no. Cant be.

BTW! FF 14 Online will be FREE FOR PS4 starting on the 22nd with the BETA release. Get it like whoa! Great game. SEGA!!!

End of line.

Sorry, have to play the FFVII snob:

It's "Materia," not "material."

Materia in XIV doesn't give you any abilities. It's just a stat boost.

It would be wonderful, but honestly... I really think that it would be wrong for Kitase to remake FFVII. Not because he wouldn't be capable of doing it justice (he is the original director, after all), but because of what he says about it being his "life work". Think about it, even if it began development today, it likely wouldn't be ready before 2017, which would be twenty years on from the original release.

I just want to ask, if you were in that position would you want people to look at such a thing and say, "that was his magnum opus." A remake of something that you created twenty years prior? Or would you rather have people looking at something new that you have created, and have then know that what you achieved all those years ago wasn't just a flash in the pan. That you always had something better, or at least different, up your sleeve?

Me, I'd want the second. So as much as I'd love to see FFVII remade, I'd rather see what else Kitase can do.

I think if it were done right it would be a massive success, the original is cosidered among the best games ever made, and if it were free of the taint of the XIII series it would probably save Square Enix from financial ruin. That's probably a decent legacy to leave behind considering how unlikely it is for him to get a new IP to even get noticed in today's gaming landscape.

I'm a selfish gamer. I don't care about his health or well-being. I want a FF7 remake and I want it now...or later

The fact that it'd be so hard to remake a super old game tells you how much effort they are putting into recent productions.

Blah -- I think FF7 is overrated but then again that's my opinion. In my book from FF7 to FF12 (doesn't include FF11 of course) it was my least favorite. Would much rather play a FF8 remake. >_<

I still see no need for any remakes of the PS1 trilogy. If you want to see how it would turn out just look at Advent Children, look how dead-pan Cloud was comparison to how he is in the actual game, he makes a lot of comical remarks towards his party but AC projects him as this man void of any form of expression. I would rather just see Final Fantasy XVI, they would never live up to the heavy expectations of an Final Fantasy VII remake... never.

Also really enjoyed 8 (have in on ps1, ps3 download and an original PC edition), but guess that's because it was the first FF I played.

7 is a very good game, would buy both if they were remade at some point.

Think they intentionally cast Cloud as 'dead-pan' in advent children as a way of showing how he now felt without Aerith in the world, and how he coped with it/got over it/etc

Don t have the time and budget but they are taking 5 + year to make ff15 ?

The story , character , battle system are already done , don t see what would make it that hard to make .

A waste of time and resources for those that want to see new numbered iterations of FF, but promising to those that want such things done.

I personally have little interest in new installments, or HD remakes of the series.

This game really is a gem in the history of video games. FFVIII and IX clearly used the PS1 better and yet VII will always be the most memorable. Something about the timing. 1997 was a good year. I'm playing through it again on the Vita and it still sends chills down my spine. Those were the days.

As for a remake. He actually might have a point. In order to do the game right, and we're talking Square SOFT right, it would a massive effort. This game doesn't deserve anything less imo. On the other hand, do we really want Square Enix touching our precious?

They are biding the time for when turn-based JRPG's get a revival... that would be one MASSIVE Phoenix, if you ask me!

I'd rather the current Square Enix staff stay far away from all PS1 era FF games, because the current staff can't make a good FF game to save their life.

Honestly I love this game, I'm not so sure I want it touched in any way.

It's like trying to buy a classic car. I want the original version....sure the modified ones may look better but there is just no match for a number for number car.

id love to see it if it was done right but i think they should work on their current projects FF15 and KH3 before doing other projects

as far as FF14 even being remotely related hah SE originally said they were going to be bringing things in from every FF game
for instance Magi tech armor from FF6 Twin Tania from FF5 which is Coil turn 5
Materia FF7 Lightning FF13 theirs no relationship between 14 and any FF their just re using cr@p because their trying to attract the FF audience to buy the game

my personal opinion FF14 is a bad MMO the only thing that May Save the MMO is it being on a Console
