Is A "Top-Down Action/RPG" Duke Nukem A Big Mistake?

When I first saw the idea for Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, I was immediately intrigued.

Then I wondered if the developers might be making a colossal mistake.

No idea if this game will ever happen - what with the whole Gearbox/Interceptor/Apogee snafu concerning the Duke Nukem IP - but if it does, and if we actually get a "top-down action/RPG" that exists within the Duke Nukem universe, I'll have difficulty wrapping my brain around it. I just will. I understand that that's probably the point but even so, such a drastic departure from FPS land may be ill-advised. Remember, Duke is a pioneer in the shooter genre; to ditch that is like slapping history in the face.

At the same time, I can't help but remember that Duke Nukem Forever was a freakin' travesty. A 13-year wait for a less-than-mediocre game. The Duke deserves better. Maybe we should just let him recede into the shadows and hopefully, over time, we'll only remember all the good times we had blowing up aliens and ogling strippers. We can simply pretend DNF never existed. I'm good with that. Or, maybe we should let another developer try again...question is, should they try something so ridiculous? A top-down action/RPG? Really?

Hey, I love those kinds of games. I loved me some Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath back in the PS2 days. But Duke Nukem in such a format? I'm not even sure how that work, honestly. Further, I'm not even certain it can work.

I don't think it matters. The quality of DNF was bad enough to consider that a mistake as it is.

I finally figured out a game I used to play back then. All I could remember was strippers, pigs, and a subway with (what appears to be) water on the ground.

Does anyone know what game I'm talking about? Literally, that's all I remember about the Ps1 game I used to play (or ps2). I know the title, but does anyone know what game I'm talking about?

Sounds like "Time to Kill", if I remember correctly, it had the same level design/grid based-platforming movement as Tomb Raider.

Hell yeah! I just recently found out. Now, there is another game I'd like to know the title of as well.

I remember there were more than one of these games. Like sequels (not sure if true), but it was a first person shooter I think. I remember caves, narrow caves. You were able to use night vision googles in this game. I remember the box the game came in was red. If anyone knows the game I'm talking about? I know it is not a lot of info, but it is all I can rememeber.

Hm... I'd give it a go. I say this having thoroughly enjoyed me some classic DN.

I wonder though... what if this new venture were done for the Vita and/or 3DS? I suppose if the game had a big enough scale there could be justification on a home console... but I can't help thinking this direction might be better suited and have better appeal on a handheld.

Personally I think top-down perspective is a mistake, period. Never liked that perspective.

It's too restricting! I hate it when what could potentially be really awesome views and discoveries are hindered by seeing everything from the top.

Top-down is great to get a strategic overview, a view to jump in and out from. But to be stuck in top-down? It sux.

Not every single video game on earth has to be about exploration, Beamboom.

Sure Ben, but the point here is the perspective not the exploration.
Also games without exploration, like DOTA, I find that perspective to be annoying. It feels so... Stuck!

The last birds view game I played was probably Torchlight 2. An incredibly charming action RPG with loads of great looking locations and wonderful artwork, but damn that perspective...

One obvious exception is the traditional strategy games where you manage a *huge* amount of units and installations. Those do naturally need to be top-down.

But games where you are just one character or just a small group? Well then I definitely prefer a different perspective.

I must be one of the few who thought DNF was ok. Not great but ok. Highly flawed.

Duke Nukem should learn from something like Fallout 3. It's going away from it's roots a little bit, but in this day and age it needs some depth. >_<

I think it could work, who would have thought people would enjoy a Tomb Raider dungeon crawler?

I don't think I'd buy it though, Duke should be an FPS. I avoided the TPS games.

Changing the perspective means nothing to me. Would Zaxxon not be Zaxxon if they redid it in FPS view? How horrible was it when Mario went from sidescroller to third person? The important part would be to make Duke back to Duke...oh, and make it a quality game. DNF was horrible and would have been horrible if it were Gears, God of War, or Mickey Mouse. If done correctly this could be a good game AND contain Duke. How does the perspective hinder the game if the programming is tight?
