PS Now Rental Options Already Appearing On PlayStation Store

The PlayStation Now service will roll out this summer in North America, but we're already seeing options for renting certain games.

According to MP1st, a recent PSN update added links for 1-day, 7-day and 30-day rentals for the game Catherine. Attempting to rent the game will put the title in your transaction history (as confirmed by PSN Stores).

The cost is "Free" for the rental, although that could be a PlayStation Plus promotion. The cost of purchasing the game is $9.99, by the way. As for the Gaikai-powered rental service, it has been a topic of controversy ever since it was announced. PlayStation Now is akin to a Netflix-like subscription, but some players have a problem with the way it's set up. The question is: How often would you rent games?

I've got Plus and that's enough for me, I say.

Saint and John were discussing this yesterday. Saint found out the hard way that the links were just placements. Sorry Saint!

I'm not interested in renting individual games...give me a service like Netflix and give it to me now.

Netflix must be the way to go. Rentals makes no sense. Netflix killed movie rentals. It's obviously more preferential to people than individual rentals.

Ha LV,

Yeah I gotta admit....Sony sure was a mite early going all "April Fools" Pimp-style on my a$$ with Catherine, so no bed & breakfast with the C-K babes for me.

Hmmm, maybe I should go see if I can get a rise out of Barbie, I think she's still at the Riding Academy, LOL

Maybe they will have individual rentals like with the movies as well as the scrip.

Giving people the option is the way to go, because consumers like choice. Though Sony would love nothing more than to give people a choice where the vast majority of people will see the value that can be had by a subscription model and opt for that. That's the genius of Netflix, after all. Month after month, like clockwork, collecting x dollars from each and every member. We feel like we're getting good value (I'd agree that it is a great value) but from the companies perspective, they get a ton of money from each of us.

That's mostly true, yes. There are plus and minuses to script models. The good side is the steady source of income, as you say. Even in slow months, you will continue to make the same amounts of money.

The downside is that you also don't get large influxes of business like you would at times when major release seasons come about (like Christmas).

Investors, who collectively constitute the majority of stake typically, enjoy that model because it's low cost/maintenance and they are guaranteed to continue to get a steady source of dividends.

Theoretically, however, you could make more money without scripts, but it's far more challenging and comes with greater risk.

Give the gamers both pay options,

Either....
1. Pay a monthly subscribers fee for all games
2. Pay only for the one's you want, game by game

Problem solved

I don't even have enough time to play all of my free plus games let alone also pay for some other service that provides games.

i hope they dont go with a rent for x days option that is the stupidest thing ever invented!
what happens if you get called into work unexpectedly, or have to work back, or for whatever reason you cant play for that day?
so you loose a day, or what if you only paid for one day you lose it totally!
exactly why i stopped going to the video store they never have what you want, and when you finally do find something you want, your forced to watch it that night then you have to bring it back.
lord knows how much money ive pissed away on especially blurays when my PoS $ony player was playing up on me and didnt want to read anything, rented countless discs and had to take them back because the PoS wouldnt read any of them.
i find it amazing how $ony manages to create bluray players that only after 3 weeks of usage manage to somehow kill their laser and need a replacement!
my old panasonic BR players been going strong since they first released in what, 06!?

When I buy an item, I can bring it home, lend it to a friend, re-sell it, or smash it or put it in a fire if I want.
I consider buying a non corporeal product that is only timely on your HDD and can be removed from the server and thus not accessible anymore, akin to a rent rather than a buy.
Here the game won't even be on your HDD at all so you buy litterally nothing. I'll check the rent prices, and I hope this will be "real" playing time, so renting one day will be 24 hours that I can split any way I want (6 x 4 hours, or 12 x 2 hours)

Maybe it has rental periods cause now will be like Netflix disc service n u can only rent 1or2 games at a time or the max number of rentals can only add up 2 a certain number of days each month depending on the Now pack u subscribe 2

I fit's free, I'd rent games, then buy them if I like them. But to pay for the rentals, no. Best would be paying for a service which gives you discount on buying the games after rental period ends. But it'd have to be cheaper than buying it off of Plus.

Really need to intergrate free rentals with Plus. No plus, pay for the rentals. have plus, you don't. I don't see folks shelling out $50 for Plus, than another $50 to rent.

I rent through GameFly and LOVE IT! I have a massive library of games that I rarely even look at anymore. I could sell them, but the most places don't offer much.

With rental if I like the game I can buy it. With Game Fly I usually save $10 off the regular price for newer games because of my discounts and rewards.

I don't need the hard copy gathering dust. Give me a reduced price game that I can rent and I will take it. If I have to play on line then I will buy it. But the vast majority of games do not offer on line play and many that do aren't worth playing on line.
