PS3 Firmware 1.82 On The Way
We're loving Sony's official PlayStation blog, if only because they're really keeping it updated with news you won't find anywhere else. Well, you'll find it here (and not long after it gets posted there), just because we're good like that. But anyway, one of the latest posts by Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations focuses on another PS3 firmware update.
In response to readers asking for a heads-up on these updates, Lempel has announced another PS3 firmware "in the works." Version 1.82 should be ready within the next few days, and it will enable "playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files." If you're not familiar, these are high-quality files that previously wouldn't function on the PS3, but will soon work just fine. He also added:
"Hopefully, this update is moving us closer to the audio playback features many of you commented about in my post the other week. We’re continuing to evaluate and improve things across the board, including PS2 software compatibility. I’ll chime in here quickly with an update once the firmware is live and ready.
Well, the backwards compatibility of the PS3 works pretty darn well in the U.S., so perhaps he's referring to the very different European PS3 b/c setup. But either way, it's good to know Sony continues to upgrade their system, and that blog isn't just for advertising.
