Harmonix: Rock Band Is "Near And Dear," It's Coming Back

Harmonix has made similar claims before, so you can probably expect Rock Band to make a triumphant return at some point.

During a PAX East keynoate address, studio CEO Alex Rigopulos told the assembled media that his team had "grand plans" to bring both the Rock Band and Dance Central franchises to next-gen consoles.

At the same time, he wouldn't officially confirm a new title for either series, although he made it plain that both IPs are "near and dear" to Harmonix. Therefore, they want to tackle next-gen consoles "at some point," even if the interactive music boom has died down. The last entry in the Rock Band series was the old-school digital game Rock Band Blitz; we haven't seen a full installment (complete with those plastic instruments) since Rock Band 3 back in 2010.

I wonder how Harmonix will bring these titles back...they'd have to update them somehow for next-gen consumption, wouldn't you think?

It maybe near and dear but they must know people don't want plastic instruments and controllers aren't that engaging as music instrument. Wonder how they plan on bring it back.

I really liked Rock Band (and Guitar Hero while they had it), but I refuse to buy plastic guitars again.

I love these games tbh, but yeah, I have two plastic guitars already, and a plastic drum set I don't want more clutter. And those DLCs we've already bought, they need to also work for me to get really excited about it.

Rock Band and Dance Central are some of my favourite games of all time on PS3 and 360. I've had many fun parties with Rock Band, and the Beatles Rock Band was incredibly popular with my family on a rainy birthday party.

Anyways, I'm definitely going to grab a PS4 now that I know my favourite party game series is coming to it, along with the Last of Us, and GTA V is potentially coming. (The rumors just keep mounting ad gaining traction)

As for the next-gen version of Rock Band, I would love to see cross compatability of the instruments with all consoles and PC. A USB stick that can sense up to 7 wireless instruments, a mix of guitars, drums, microphones and keyboards. No controller buttons on the instruments, make menu navigation with the controller and gameplay with the instruments. That way, no matter what platform you buy the instruments on, they will work on any console or PC!! Your friends can bring round their guitar or keyboard or drums, and it doesn't matter if it's the PS4 or XB One version they own, it will work regardless!!

I think I might send an email to Harmonix suggesting this.

If all PS3/360 DLC is carried over to next gen as well, that would just be icing on the cake!!! I've purchased over 400 songs on Rock Band and about 20 songs on Dance Central, and I certainly don't want them to go to waste.

Oh, and please, PLEASE bring back competitive versus mode Harmonix. Why was it stripped from RB3 in the first place?? People love friendly competition and while RB2 had it, you took it away in the best Rock Band game to date!! Why take away that feature?!?

I can see you were trying to go for a full band co-op experience, but people love to verse each other on guitar solos! One guitarist and one bass player just playing along to a song just isn't as much fun.

really hope they do bring this back, maybe it will coax antivision into bringing back guitar hero too.
always prefered the latter its always been much more deep and rewarding, i remember quite a few tracks were both on 3 and world tour i think it was, on RB3 i could get maximum rating on them on hardest difficulty no problem, but playing the same game on WT i was failing half way through the song at best on expert.
just so stupid to have such a massive difference between the two, i mean ones a fail, and ones a A+++++++++!
WTF!?
id love to see HD remakes of all the old released titles first, especially GH1 and 2, when i was on holidays last month i went to a really old arcade and they had a old GH arcade box really brought back the memories!
oh and i saw point blank there too, christ that really takes me back to the good old days of finishing uni and going over to a friends place to play that on his old 64.
or was it ps1?
ah. too long ago!
i miss those good old lightgun games wish they would make a comeback!

if they are going to bring them back though they really need to update and improve a few things.
1 it will bring in allot more people if they add a totally separate mode and make it like rocksmith, tailored completely to teaching you how to use a real instrument.
2 let us use whatever controller we want, be it the old dualshock controller layout, i was so pissed when they removed that and forced that clunky cheap piece of sh*t guiatr on users!
or if people like punishing themselves and being uncomfortable, then let us use whichever controller released, which obviously means they will need a special dongle since they were all created for the ps3.
should be able to convert them over though.
3 and most importantly its in the titles, ROCK band, GUITAR hero, not POP band, not SINGING hero!
so why the ^%$# is a good majority of the songs in later titles exactly that, i mean WTF does the king of POP have to do with ROCK!?
with GUITARS!?
exactly why people want HD remakes rather than a new game, because they know 1, 2 and rocks the 80s had by far the best soundtrack of the lot!
id be nice to have band specific ones like they did before, but why cant that be DLC?
thats one thing that killed it in the first place, it was so stupid charging full price for the same game just different tracks.
oh and id be nice to see proper soundtracks released, one thing thats really stupid is its amazingly difficult to find the soundtracks for each game to play in the car.
i loved the soundtracks from 1, 2 and 3 and wanted to find a soundtrack to put in the car but all i could find was those individual tracks separately, took for freaking ever to compile everything and put it together!

fix those things, and of course dont milk the f*ck out of it like you did last time with charging for DLC as if its a full new game, and dont release a new one every few months, DLC fine but thats DLC not a whole new game and 100 dollar purchase!
do that and it will take off quite well, theres still certainly allot of people out there who really enjoyed playing it years ago and really miss it.

I would love the series to move to the PS4. I can't say it'll "come back" because I have never stopped playing. It's still in my regular 5-game rotation on my PS3 and I just bought some DLC last weekend.
