Raymond: Not All Gamers Are Just Male Teenage Idiots

It's just not fair to assume that all gamers are brainless teen males.

That's what Ubisoft Toronto boss Jade Raymond believes, and we have to applaud her for that.

During a recent interview with The Grid, Raymond said she was tired of interactive entertainment "treating gamers like idiots:"

"I don't like the assumption that all people who play games want big chainsaws and women in bikinis. It's like, really? Not all gamers are teenage boys, and even teenage boys want more than that."

The interviewer said that many protagonists in games are often "husky-voiced, emotionless a**holes," which I don't agree with at all but whatever. Raymond's response to that was yes, things need to keep changing but at the same time, we are starting to see increased diversity:

"The video game world is improving, too: We're seeing some variety. Grand Theft Auto has been doing a good job picking interesting main characters in recent years--like the new-immigrant underdog. There still isn't a game where you get to play an old lady. That's my dream."

It's not necessarily my dream to play as an "old lady," but I see her point. The good news is that many games are starting to try new things, and we're also seeing many different characters in current narratives.

Meh, I'm all for variety but make sure I can still have a chainsaw and murder prostitutes.

There really are a lot of husky super manly men, which makes me nostalgic for Cloud Strife.

And sometimes we do want chainsaw babes like with, say, Lollipop Chainsaw.

It's all a matter of what the game calls for, some should be progressive and others should be juvenile, still others should try for realism.

The real problem is devs thinking that, for success, they need to make stories and interactions for a junior high audience like with Second Son. It's the PG-13 effect.

Hey, no one complained about Rikkus outfit in X-2 so it better not start now.

When I was a teenager, I may not have played very many games due to me always being out with girls. But when I was home, a game like ffx-2 appealed to me because it was fanservice central and I will admit that. nowadays its different, sure, but why did DOA become so popular? Its definitely because of the story and character developement...right? RIGHT?

As a man, male, human being with a different sexual organ than that of a woman, I prefer to play as a male character. Why the hell would I want to play as an old woman? This is all nonsense to me and I get there needs to be more diversity but please don't change every game to suit both sexes because irregardless of what people think, female gamers are rare. Girls who play games are common however, because almost everyone at this point plays video games.

Trying to completely change the entire landscape of something to suit a gender is sexist. There shouldn't be a need for something like that because if you want to make a game with a female lead, DO IT. Whose going to stop you? Its been done hundreds of times before.

Lara Croft isn't a big chested, large behind'd lady anymore. Shes an average girl who is a total badass. We could and should have more games like that, but erasing everything else that a select few women find sexist or whatever, is wrong. You can't go for change with negativity and trying to force it is bs. I have quite a few female gamer friends and you know what they think about this topic? They don't care. One of them loves lolipop chainsaw. Whats wrong with that? Is she a woman hater cause she enjoyed it? We should have our stupid skimpy girl games and the serious business, mean, muscular women who can crush boulders with their thighs. Both can co-exist and they should.

I never really thought of Lara's ass as being big. Maybe it's just me.

Raymond isn't calling for _every_ protagonist to be an old woman (although it could be funny to see Duchess Nukem at 80 hobbling around fragging aliens), but for more variety. Variety doesn't have to mean removing what's already there (indeed, interpreting variety in a "it's taking things away" sense is pretty narrow), but adding to it.

I know that I certainly want more. Seriously, I love those games that provide a sense of whimsy and wonderment. I want AAA games that challenge the tropes of action and adventure. I'm kind of sick of shooting and stabbing people. I want to explore. I want more games like Heavy Rain, where we're asked to empathise with the character on a level deeper than "kill, kill, kill" on a gameplay front, and I don't mean just by allowing us to pick what they're going to say.

Give me the likes of ICO, Ni no Kuni, hell even Beyond: Two Souls, where it feels as though it's about more than just beating the bad guys.

And yeah, I am kinda tired of the gruff protagonists. That's why I went with FemShep in ME. It's why I love Heavenly Sword and Valkyria Chronicles (Welkin's a sensitive soul). And if they could make a good game out of an old lady's story, I'd love to play it. This industry will thrive on diversity, and diversity is one thing that the AAA sector lacks.

We need more Samus Aran's. There was a lady you'd want to play, even if you're a dude.

agreed to most of that, but i hope the last part was a joke.
i mean how out of place would a lill old granny be in a GTA game?
last thing you would expect to see a granny do is shank a guy, steal his car, and commence a massive drive by shooting with the cops running over countless pedestrians in the process, and ending it all by leaping out of the car sending it skidding into a petrol station, big fireball as the cops follow suit into the station, and finishing it all off with a shootout behind the counter of your local gun store.
one thing i loved about GTAV gets me every time, when the cops bust in and start shooting you the shopkeeper returns fire.
how dare you bust into my shop and start shooting up the place!

Aww... we had such a good thing going with the lack of mentions of the fact that Jade Raymond is a very attractive woman. Seriously, reading the comments of a similar article posted at IGN was painful...

I don't see it. I think people just think she's attractive because she is a gamer and not stereotypically hideous.
