Pro Competitive Gaming Will Be Part Of This Year's X-Games

Well, I've seen ESPN cover a Scrabble tournament before, so why not?

It's a controversial topic: Is competitive gaming actually a legitimate sport? Some say no (including me) but ESPN has opted to air some eSports:

Today, the world's largest sports entertainment network and Major League Gaming (MLG) has announced a partnership that will allow MLG pros to compete at ESPN's X-Games.

It'll be the first ever Major League Gaming X-Games Invitational, as eight of the world's best Call of Duty teams will compete in a three-day tournament for a shot at a medal. But of course it's CoD; what'd you think it'd be, Dark Souls? Anyway, MLB will get a dedicated area showcasing the event at the upcoming X-Games in Austin. As for how often the competitive gaming will get on TV, nobody knows. We'll have to see.

Said MLB executive vice president of sales, Don Reilly:

"The popularity of competitive gaming and the MLG Pro Circuit is at an all-time high with millions watching the best gamers compete each month on MLG.tv. This collaboration with X Games will help further bring MLG to the mainstream while we provide advertisers with quality exposure and deep engagement with our fan base on MLG.tv across all platforms."

If you'd like to attend the event in person, you can purchase a three-day pass for $89, which also includes access to the MLB tent. For $189, you can pick up an "extremely limited" VIP pass, which gets you reserved seats in said tent, a behind-the-scenes tour, a SWAG bag, and meet-and-greet opportunities with the players.

Okay, I'm not saying I can do what those CoD pros can do but you know, I'm not really itching for an autograph, either.

I always thought the X in X-games meant extreme, since all the high flying tricks they do. Guess not. Maybe generation X?

As far as games, better COD than League of Legends..... most people have at least heard of COD and/or played it.

I think it's sad when gamers are against this or ridicule it. This is yet another important step for gaming to be accepted in the wider audience as something more than just a boy's room activity.
In fact it will probably have a much bigger impact in the mainstream than some pseudo-intelligent "adult" single-player game release.

I think it's totally awesome that gaming tournaments are included in more than pure gaming events.

There's some deep truth hidden in there too... Look at poker... it's no longer seen for what it is... and that is just "gambling".

Ahhhh - *excellent* case in point, Underdog. You are so right!

Poker was since forever been associated with shady locations, criminal organizations and huge personal tragedies.
But since the tournaments started it's been completely lifted up to something legit and even respected.

I hate League of Legends for many reasons, but the absolutely terrible, elitist community probably takes the cake. That being said... I 'get' how it can be made into something on the level of professional. I don't agree with it, but I get it. However... I only hope the people that desire this profession don't turn into cave trolls. That and I could easily see turning the act of actually gaming into a job kinda ruin the experience. That's just me though.

I get it...I do, exposure is good and video games and extreme sports have always gone hand in hand, but still...no, just...no...Gaming, poker and darts are not sports...they are games of skills not sports...you might as well throw golf in that category too as it is just a skillful walk in the park...What's next? Major League Go Fish? Extreme Jenga? Come on, have real sports gotten so bad that this is what people want?

You want to know the difference between sports athletes and non? Do a search of an injury list for true athletes, especially extreme athletes. Broken bones, sprained and torn muscles, career ending injuries, extensive Rehab. If you have could die in real life doing it, then it is a sport... If Carpal tunnel thumbs, poor eyesight and a bad KDR is a side affect of your "sport" then it isn't a sport...

I wish they'd do this for fighting games. I don't care for COD or LOL as they are already so popular. The FGC needs to extend further than just EVO.

"what'd you think it'd be, Dark Souls?" well no, but would Starcraft II have been too much to ask for?

i feel ya ben me neither but of all games man i wud prefer a MOBA to COD any day like dota or LOL i've seen people on LOL ace an entire team on like 5-10% HP now that is pritty impresive as for a quick scope meh that stuff is sorta cheap even if i can't do it i do care and thats not the point i just wish the MLG coverage was on any other MLG game other than COD like seriously for gud ness sake the gaming world doesn't revolve around COD.

okay rant over

happy gaming =)

I've never seen a professional tournament ever being played on consoles. Not even local tournaments.

Of course they use the best possible connections and equipment, just like any performer in any sport would use. Doesn't make their performances less impressive at all. Would you say a casual biker is better than a professional biker just cause their bikes are more heavy?

But if this MLG organization arrange their tournaments using X360s, well then I'd go as far as saying they per definition can't be professional tournaments. I's comparable to arranging a bike tournament with regular bikes, or soccer tournament with plastic balls.

Oh, and there's a "reply" button here.
