A Die-Hard PlayStation Fan's Response To Sony's E3: "Meh"

Yes, the fan in the headline is me.

For the record, I don't think Sony's E3 2014 conference was bad. In fact, I think it was just fine; if I was to assign a grade, I'd go with a B or a B-. Above all else, the emphasis was on the games (despite some slight VR and TV-related deviations), and that's what PlayStation has always been about.

I also loved some of the new trailers, and I still say Uncharted remains head-and-shoulders above any other established franchise in gaming. Bloodborne could be amazing as well, and it was nice to see LittleBigPlanet 3, because Sony really needed another exclusive for the holiday season (you can't just rely on Driveclub). It was also pretty clear that shooter fans will want to play Destiny on the PS4, exclusive betas are never a bad thing, and that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain trailer was awesome.

However, it lacked that trademark "oomph" we often see from Sony at E3. Perhaps the biggest problem is the lack of surprises, and while a few new exclusive IPs are great, I really wanted to see The Last Guardian and either a new God of War or Gran Turismo (or both). Guerrilla Games didn't show off their new game (supposedly a PS4-exclusive RPG), and with no Final Fantasy XV or Kingdom Hearts III, the show just didn't feel very...I dunno..."PlayStation-y," I guess. Maybe the problem is that it felt too much like Microsoft's conference, and those are rarely all that exciting.

The only part that really felt like PlayStation was when they showed off that upcoming suite of smaller PS4 exclusives; i.e., Abzu, Let it Die, No Man's Sky, etc. Beyond that, I was never really enamored with that show, were you?

P.S. Here's one problem: No Jack Tretton! :(

I didn't catch the entire show start to finish but I did follow it fairly closely. I feel really satisfied with this years E3. I can't say I've felt that way from an E3 conference for a long time. Pretty much every game trailer, network service, and hardware device shown had me thrilled or interested. For what I'm used to, I'd give it a 9. It needed something Tekken, DOA, or VF to have made it perfectly mind blowing.

I don't value MK like I do any of the others I listed Vivi. I somewhat felt the visuals didn't live up to the pre-rendered trailer they showed. It looked nice but MK's trademark (not in a good way) stiff and clunky motion still really bothers me.

I thought is was ok Ben but like you said, the lack of Jack Tretton took a lot away from the conference for me. It just didn't have that honest / comic vibe that Jack brought to the show. Just my opinion...

Perhaps it feels anti-climatic in the wake of last years E3, which was without a doubt the most spectacular of all E3's...it was EPIC and so this year it just felt, blah. There weren't any real surprises, only a couple of jabs between the giants and most of the time when I see them debut a trailer my first thought is, how long will that title be delayed? Call me jaded, but when I see a 2015 release date I'm sure it will be more like 2016. I'm also chalking my "meh" attitude up to the fact that I didn't see Red Dead Redemption. One can hope, can't they? Yes, I'm thrilled that GTA V is heading onto the PS4, but I would also love to see RDR (one of my all time favorite games).

I can't believe people are still hoping for that... if anything the problem was that Final Fantasy XV was not present. That game should be S-E's main focus not Lightning Returns is out of the way. But once again, nothing. Poor on S-E's part.

I don't think there's anything wrong with someone wanting an FFVII remake. Even if it's not probable or realistic, I'd argue it's even stranger for people to get upset about people wanting a remake.

I got my Tretton fill on the Spike coverage of E3. I agree about the show, in fact the whole show not just Sony was down-tempo. It has become very controlled, no room for excitement.

And no Heavenly Sword II

I am happy with E3. I mean, I have learnt not to expect much anymore, most shows are a let down, or promise games that are coming out in 2 years time.

I find that if I follow a game for too long before release, it ruins the hype for me. Destiny is one such game, I still can't wait to play it, but I am not super pumped as I was June last year.

People need to temper their expectations, but what am I saying, this is the gaming community I am talking about hahaha

I think we all felt that way. And to tell you the truth, the Uncharted trailer left me more disappointed than excited.

Last year they showed off the first trailer which was basically the reveal with absolutely no game play or indication of how the game would look. So you figure this time they would show at least five seconds of in game footage, but instead show a small cut scene that doesn't really give you that great of an idea of how it's gonna look.

So the trailer did the opposite of excite for me. It was more like the conference ended on what could have been a bang, with a let down.

Also, coming from a big inFAMOUS fan, the DLC looks kinda lame. And not really looking to play with the neon powers after I already invested so many hours using them.

LBP 3 was also kind of a let down. While the new characters look amazing. I was hoping for maybe full on 3-D and not just side scrolling. And it looks like the terrible controls are back, evident by how badly everyone failed at controlling the characters during the presentation.

LBP never caught on with any of my friends because of those terrible floaty controls and overall actually. Pointing those guns in LBP are a pain in the ass as well.

In the end, MS didn't show much that made Sony feel they had to throw in all the cards yet. Its just E3 and the year is still young. Never go all in before the real game begins. MS did just that, and that gave Sony some breathing room. Nintendo's got some awesome looking games so now Sonys got both opposing consoles to look out for.

Ninty and MS went all in and showed off everything. Sonys got plenty to show still, and its a good thing they do. Imagine how awkward it would be to have nothing left to show? But all in all I felt the conference showed Sony is still in control. Even with the money loss they want to show us they haven't gotten soft or are hurting for money. They still got their heads in the A game, and we shouldn't expect anything less from them.

Notice too how almost every Developer wanted to show their games on the ps4 but Sonys booth was full? They've got the 3rd parties on their side. They've got Naughty Dog hard at work on more masterpieces. They've got FROM Software on their side, a very important Japanese developer. This E3 was all about showing off the confidence the company has in itself and its partners and fans. As the year rolls out we can expect much much more than what we saw during E3.

And I gotta say, we saw some awesome games. Happy to see a new Rainbow Six. Hardline looks like crazy fun. My number one being Bloodborne of course. It wasn't the best but it had a purpose. I have to say good for MS though for talking about games this year. Since last year they made it clear what they wanted, and now that the wii u is outselling the xbox one they've had no choice but to crackdown. See what I did there?

Happy E3 week everyone.

I'll easily pass on another GOW. After Ascension, I'm fine retiring Kratos and his archaic fighting style. The same can be said for Gran Turismo unless they finally pump some life into these games and AI. Dear god, GT6 had to be the biggest waste of money. Not because it was bad, but because it was GT5 repackaged so I barely even play it anymore.

Definitely excited for UC4, but they better make sure its on par or better than UC2 because UC3 didn't do it for me at all which I found sad because UC 1 and 2 were game changers. I honestly felt Tomb Raider was better than UC3.

E3 were just exactly as one should have every reason to expect, and that is the problem. No surprises.

I don't understand how one can be excited about that little cutscene from Uncharted. I mean sure, it looks good. CGI clips *should* look good today, and this is Uncharted, ffs. Are anyone surprised? Did anyone expect *less* than what little we saw?

But I'm satisfied. I am pleased because the outlook for this generation is so good. We know that great games from the biggest devs will come aplenty, and we rest assured we got the best console to play them on.
That puts my mind in a peaceful state. We have left the troubled years behind us.

It's impressive of the engine if the entire clip was rendered realtime, and not only the last half.

Still, was there *anyone* on the planet of this earth that didn't expect cinematic visuals from that studio? It's what they do!

The entire clip was. The clip starts by stating that all of the footage is running in real-time on a PS4.
Of course we expected excellence from ND's visual pedigree but when actually seeing the leap in real-time it's something incredible. Nathan Drake looks so convincing he could have many fooled into thinking that was a live actor in the scene.

That's what they said about the TLOU "Ambush Trailer" as well, and it wasn't really real time. The character models are far more detailed during cutscenes than the actual game in TLOU. I guess they're allowed to say it because the game is rendering them in real time, but since they don't have to render much else, they can make the characters look way more detailed. But again, the characters don't look that good when you can actually control them.

I have to admit I was expecting proper gameplay footage of Uncharted 4 - especially after hearing industry insiders claim how amazing it was - I mean graphically yes, astonishing, but I just wanted a bit more. Still it was enough to get me excited a reason to get a PS4 indeed.

I felt the E3 Show was good, far better than the others. I was actually won over my 1886 The Order this time, it looks more than just a Gears of War rip off, I loved the suspense in that video. The Phantom Pain's video was worth staying up until 4am to see it. I really cannot wait to play this game, it looks like it has the potential to be the best in the franchise and I just cannot accept compromising with a PS3 experience now.

I mean I am not going to be keen on everything but to come out with 3 titan titles I cannot really complain.

Overall it wasn't a bad E3 conference by Sony, but it also wasn't that good either...

It was lacking any of the rumored surprises like Heavenly Sword II or of course Last Guardian, and the one surprise they did show, LBP 3 was a pretty disappointing showing IMO, I mean seriously it looked pretty much exactly like the previous LBP, but with a few new characters?!

Most of the cool footage shown was from cut-scenes, which sure make the games look very next-geney but since they're not showing any gameplay the actual games might end up looking much worse (as is so often the case)

The best-looking game with actual gameplay must be The Order, as stupid as the character acted in the scene but at least it looked really good...

Then all those weird-looking indie-games, none of which looked either next-gen or very fun to play, for once the indie-games shown at the Microsoft conf. actually looked a lot better...

Hopefully the great-looking footage from Let it die & Bloodborne will translate into equally good-looking actual games, otherwise the only thing that saved this show was U4 & The Order (at least in terms of graphics) for me...

Another thing, is that people are so synical these days, that they will see bad things in the good, and nothing in the surprising.

For example, I've seen a few people say how LBP3 looks exactly the same as the last games. But if you take an honest look, they've added a whole bunch of new stuff.

Again, expectations. And Gamers have totally unrealistic expectations now days.

I'd say I probably agree. It was a solid showing from Sony, but definitely not mind-blowing.

Not a fan of the series but I admit they ended on a high note with Uncharted 4, although I was expecting at least some form of gameplay (yes, even despite the trouble that Naughty Dog had been going through with many important people leaving and all...), considering that we only got a short teaser last year of a map panning on screen, and they placed a release date of 2015...

I felt they spent too long talking about TV and all that other stuff that not many people care about, as opposed to Microsoft who surprisingly just focused on the games this time around! So well done to them, I suppose.

Was surprised at LBP3, although I was expecting a different game from MM.

I'd say if they revealed the Last Guardian (with a solid release date) that would've won it for them. Or a new IP that no one expected at all!
Overall I'd say the conference was a B-. Was alright, but nothing spectacular.

this the 1st E3 i didnt take time to watch cause of studies. since 06 G4TV was the source or online streams. watched all the highlights overall this year was koo, not what i was looking for but koo. after playing GTAV for a few months i could see there was parts missing to the game felt same bout GTA4.... felt same bout alot of multi plat games with Ps3 & 360. think content was held back cause of 360 & this gen the full game is ready.

MK raw the trailer & gameplay got my pockets.

The order got my attention the environment, mechanics & graphics smooth. might pick it up.

Uncharted teased some & once again u notice they unfolding the system early... makes u anticipate the future of Ps4.

MGS still serious.... COD was leaning on picking it up but future settings dont care for remind me of Halo & Titanfall.

need to see more Project Cars want to know if that can hold untill GT7. DriveClub koo but its a social orientated racer.... thought Agent, Last Gaurdian & Midnight Club would show.

Zelda suprised me... didnt think wii u had that hardware zelda shows it got lot of potential if Nintendo had more 1st party developers that made games utilizing wii u.
