Bravely Default's Success Making Square Enix Think Twice

We at PSXE have been saying for years that Square Enix has a seriously messed-up view of the gaming industry and their loyal fanbase.

And it may have taken way too long, but perhaps the recent success of a JRPG in Western territories has finally allowed the once-great Squaresoft to see the light.

A tipster sent us a link to an article at VentureBeat, and it cites the financial success of Bravely Default, the acclaimed 3DS RPG. The game sold 400,000 copies in Japan and managed to sell over 600,000 in the rest of the world, bringing the total to 1 million sold. With this success, it seems Square Enix is rethinking things.

Here's what company president Yosuke Matsuda had to say in a recent interview with Japanese newspaper Nikkei:

"In the past, when we developed console games with a worldwide premise, and we lost our focus. And not only did [those releases] end up being games that weren’t for the Japanese, but they ended up being incomplete titles that weren’t even fit for a global audience."

Interestingly, the latest Final Fantasy iteration - Lightning Returns - had a much bigger budget and the legendary name, and it only performed on par with Bravely Default. This has turned out to be quite the revelation for Matsuda and company, especially after each of the previous three FF titles declined steeply in the sales and acclaim categories. Added Matsuda:

"On the other hand, there are games like the JRPG [Bravely Default that] we made for the Japanese audience with the proper [and familiar] elements. [That] ended up selling well around the world."

Could they finally be waking up? Well, based on what we've heard so far concerning Final Fantasy XV, I'd have to say "no." Guess we'll have to wait and see, though.

I...I don't even....

HE IS JUST NOW REALIZING THAT PEOPLE MISS THE OLD WAYS OF SQUARE ENIX?

I have nothing to say. You have a chance to meld everyones broken heart with XV. Mess it up, and no one will forgive you this time Square. You're lucky its even got hype still, because it became a legend just from the first few trailers. Just when it was exclusive it became something legendary. You mess -anything- up, you're done. RIP GGNORE.

yes, they actually didn't know that their business plan was always worthless and even though every basement otaku did.

FFXV can't fix things either because it is also an action game.

XV is going to be a problem, it has to be the action game it was born as because they can't take it to the drawing board now. That will further damage the FF name. We can only hope they are committed to reboot properly with XVI.

It's sad it took so long for them to find out what every single gamer in the entire world already knew and discussed on the internet but there it is.

Who would have thought that games that were popular for being Japanese would remain so and never needed to be changed into action games in the first place?

was just going to say it's too late to change XV - keeping fingers crossed for XVI... for the next 8ish years probably! - Bloody hell, I might be mid thirties by the time a decent FF surfaces again :(

Didn't they make the same statements several months ago?

More or less the same statement.

They made the game for Japanese audiences in mind. And yet the game fared a lot better in the West. That surprised them.

They said that back in March.

So I guess the good news here is that they didn't forget and are actually learning something from it.

Yeah

That they have said this publicly on more than one occasion is a strong indication of deep change taking place within square's collective mindset.

I'm surprised no one has told me by now how it's impossible because the DS has two screens =p

I still struggle to see how they could have been so wrong for so long. If America and Europe want Western style games there are hundreds to go at we are already spoilt for choice. What we don't have are Eastern style more traditional games.

Maybe now they will stop trying to compete (and failing to do so) and instead add a bit of variety to our store shelves.

Fingers crossed!

It's good to hear this...

You know FF is one franchise where I think if they just stuck to playing it safe by not screwing with the formula things would've worked out just fine for them.
You know like how most every franchise survives these days?
Here we have games like Assassin's Creed and CoD not veering too far from the well trodden path and here's S-E implementing all of their creative freedoms to produce something new and different for the series, albeit far less popular.

The latest up and coming FF game btw sorta looks like FF gone Uncharted. These guys just need to stay grounded to something.

What is it about Final Fantasy XV that doesn't convince you that Square enix are going back to their old ways beside being an action rpg? I'm curious.

Because it being an action rpg isn't their old way?
