Another PSN Attack...I Hope Hackers Are Proud Of Themselves

Hackers attacked the PlayStation Network, along with other major network services over the weekend.

Sony confirmed as much; due to an "artificially high amount of traffic," things stopped working. Yep, another DDoS attack, evidently.

But I'm bored. I think we're all bored. The problem is, none of this seems to mean anything. It's like when a kid tips over a soda just because he's pissed at his parents. Thing is, such antics don't appear to have any legitimate foundation. They seem to be grounded in nothing but immaturity. It's like children throwing a tantrum. They're not really making any point (these attacks aren't accompanied by any sort of political, social, religious, or business statement), and they don't seem to be rebelling against anything.

These kinds of things bore me. You're not actually doing or saying anything. Unless, of course, you're just proving to everyone how smart and skilled you are, given your ability to bring down major Internet networks. I dunno, I guess you could impress people with that. Has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence, though, and again, I couldn't possibly be less interested. You inconvenienced a lot of people. Well yay, good for you. And? What do you get out of it? Some sort of shady profit? Well, whatever. If so, then you're just a common criminal.

None of this is special. Nothing these people do can be considered impressive. They hurt people electronically. If it's just a prank, you're a child. If you're trying to steal from them, despite the fancy electronic smoke and mirrors, it's merely the virtual equivalent of leaping out of the shadows, smacking someone in the knees with a lead pipe, and stealing their wallet. You're a thug with a keyboard rather than a pipe. Either way, whether you're acting like a child playing a prank, or you're just a criminal, I don't see any reason why anybody should care about anything you do.

I should probably add that it's entirely our fault. We've worshipped at the altar of eletrconics for so long that we treat it like another breathing medium, as if we couldn't live without it. If we'd never let it rule our lives in the first place, none of this would really matter. You reap what you sow, plain and simple.

DDOS attacks actually are relatively often about money. "Pay us and we'll stop" sorta thing.

I have no idea what's happening here but it's a real possibility

It seems to only be affecting PS4 cause I've been online on and off all day on the PS3. I really hate how these hackers do this, I've been wanting to play online with Diablo 3 all day. :(

Why? Because they can. Sometimes it's that simple.

Also it's really not fair to hate on electronics so much, the reason electronics are so popular is because they can make life better. Of course there are negatives but overall I think electronics have improved the quality of life for the average person.

Never in human history has there been so much depression, obesity and addiction. Maybe the "material quality" of our lives has never been better, but the actual quality (like human well being) seems to be at an all time low.

Yeah, because we all know that computers cured Polio. And last I checked, the Holocaust, in the entire scope of human history, absolutely qualifies as modern.

Well they do use electronics to develop vaccines, at the end of the day electronics advance society as a whole no matter what anyone says rather than where we'd be with no electronics at all, with that said; with or without electronics you have those that'll find something stupid to do to annoy and bring others down no matter what.

You're confusing the benefit of technological advancement with QOL. Two very different things. Also, I don't get your genocides argument. Are you agreeing with us, then? Our point was that electronics haven't stopped genocides or war from occurring... not that they caused them.

Ben, this is why I said it was dangerous to say that without a full, detailed explanation.

Aside from things like improved health care, efficiency in the workplace, etc, you also have to measure overall social impact, environmental impact, changes in addiction, suicide rates, mental health, job satisfaction, family situational satisfaction rates, etc. etc. and much much more. These all tie into QOL, but what happens is that when we fix one problem, we are no longer concerned with it. But instead of being happy, we have a tendency to find new problems and attach our valuing of personal QOL to that.

In short, QOL is basically a general idea of your level of happiness with life. Someone in a tribe in Africa who loves getting up every morning, is relatively happy, but owns very little material goods (not all Africans in tribes are oppressed and malnourished) and no technology, would have a higher QOL than someone in NA living in a 2 story home with 5 acres of land, but who hates their job, is going through a divorce, rarely sees friends outside of facebook (the African sees all their loved ones every day), and struggles with depression. We are a social species, and unfortunately, while technology has made it so we don't have to pick up a phone, meet in person, and be provided with 24/7 personal entertainment, it has also forced us into rarely picking up a phone, rarely meeting people in person, and rarely needing to seek out entertainment and socializing with others.

Unfortunately, there are far too many complexities in how that ties in with personal electronics for me to get into on a PSX post, but it shouldn't be hard for anyone here to imagine how.

Let's see... Electronics have allowed us to isolate ourselves while "living online". This has increased introverted behavior and is fuel for depression's fire. Not good.

Electronics have made everyone "smarter". Somehow, people have convinced themselves that the Internet isn't another media outlet like TV shows. That the truth is spoken and is reliable. False. Instead, we're going at each others throats over false information and blatant lies. Social media has turned us into critics that show no remorse for fellow, flawed, beings. As if those criticizing the other ARE perfect.

It's bad. We don't socialize in person. We don't leave our homes for entertainment. We aren't willing to accept the truth and often times rely on propaganda to "prove" we're "right" after all.

One of the few good things we've accomplished with gadgets is space exploration. Even that's depressing. We've turned our backs on religious individuals who seek it for morality. Other religious individuals are exploited by malicious people to serve their own breed of wars. Shit, man, you can watch people getting decapitated on YouTube! How fucked is that?!

I'm not selfish enough to claim technology and gadgets are good. Despite how great games look. Despite how easy it is to use an interactive map. We've lost our independence. Our ability to make a reasonable decision. Our ability to let others mourn the loss of someone they truly love. The ability to keep our lives private. The ability to socialize face to face.

I hate it. Yet here I am. Using it. Communicating with it. Yay for me.

in regards to technology causing people to not go outside for entertainment, not socialize and live online, that does lead to depression and i guess it does cause people to avoid seeking the help they need, but at the same time that help is there and accessible through that very same technology, people can think for themselves if they choose not to make the right decisions that's on them, this could be looked at as a slow yet positive natural selection method at work that's yet to benefit those who aren't so weak willed in the future lol

No worries. I'm too swift all the time with my responses. Usually, I'm lucky enough to edit or delete before anyone notices my ignorance. lol!

But yes, there's no doubt that technology, including electronics, have helped make life much easier. (I love Brave New World) Lots of things are automated, done for us, and more. Certainly maintaining life is easier, and communication is faster, thanks to satellites. The debate is "at what cost". And admittedly, all we have is correlative evidence to say there appears to be significant cause-effect relationships between electronics and negative QOL. It's definitely being studied in a variety of ways by many psychology departments. We'll see much more on it as time goes on. But it does seem like there's an extremely strong case so far. (a dangerous legal precedent for tech companies if enough evidence emerges to say their gadgets could be blamed for bad QOL. Especially in the US where consumers have way less legal responsibility for careful handling of what they consume compared to other companies)

You're totally right, by the way. People SHOULD know their limits, and what is healthy, etc. Yet... we also live in a world where you can sue cigarette companies for your lung cancer. (And rarely, but still sometimes, win)

To Ben and anyone else who agrees with him, perhaps quality of life was the wrong term to use based on Underdog's definition. When I said they improve QOL I was keeping in line with the article, I wasn't referring to major global issues, I simply meant that the PSN hack was at most an inconvenience and in my opinion the convenience of using electronics generally outweighs the inconveniences. That's all.

Also to those of you who are ranting against the use of electronics in our daily lives, you look like fools doing it on an internet forum.

We are going to end up being a species of overweight humans if things keep going the way they are.

As a very fit person in my 20's who takes a lot of pride in his appearance and fitness, I am absolutely disgusted at the number of fat people and 'fat pride' in general.

It makes me want to kick EVERY single 'fat pride' person I meet, in the genitals.

Technology has increased this problem. Although if I am honest, technology is the ONLY thing that will solve this problem. One day we will have machines that can burn away our fat cells and make us skinny overnight.

This attack has been aimed at other companies besides Sony.

So far it has been Sony, League of Legends, and Blizzard.net servers which have been taken offline by this DDoS.

There have been multiple parties claiming to have done this. A group called Lizard Squad (which have links to the militant group ISIS) claimed responsibility, then another guy claimed responsibility and told people to report LS' twitter account as spam, and he would restore services lol.

We will never know who truly did it, but it doesn't matter, those people don't deserve any attention. Like Ben said, they are just common cyber thugs, trying to increase the size of their E-Peen.

DDOS'ing isn't much of hacking, all you have to do is have a little script and click go, voila, cannon activated. it's just a bunch of attention seeking Ikiddies who just do it for attention by sending crap-tons of data to their servers. Which is why they constantly post about who they're crashing on their twitter. It's been happening for a week plus now on many PC games. They've shut down Blizzards (WoW and Hearthstone), Riot Games (League of Legends), Arenanets (Guildwars 2) and Jagex (Runescape) servers a few times already.

My favorite thing is people think, "Oh why don't you have any DDOS protection?" That's not really even reliable. If the attack is big enough nothing is going to stop it. But it generally lasts only a few hours as you don't want it traced back to you after too long.

LizardSquad (if you wanted to see the group.)

Like others say, this was just a ddos attack. Anyone can trigger that, it's a paid service these days and it doesn't cost much either.

So it has nothing to do with hacking, not even skills. On the plus side, the server hardware (in particular the routers/firewalls) should soon be capable to handle these kind of attacks so I see this as something that will go into history as nothing more than a childhood disease of the Internet.

People who do this should be careful. There is an Anime Private Torrent Tracker called BakaBT few years ago they banned some guy for using illegal means to raise his reputation with the tracker he then proceeded to spend a whole year doing DDOS attacks on the site. The owners finally got sick of it after giving the guy plenty of warnings to stop and released all of his private information to the internet.
This made the news on a few computer news websites when it happened so not sure if anyone heard about it.
