Take-Two: We Can't Afford To Ignore The Creation Of New IPs
Yes, they could probably survive on franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead.
But ignoring new IPs or "annualizing" those franchises aren't tactics publisher Take-Two Interactive is willing to embrace. During a presentation to investors (as cited by GameSpot), company president Karl Slatoff said 50 percent of its efforts are always focused on the invention of new IPs:
"We love putting out titles where we've got history, and they're really, really big titles. Because they're safe and they're predictable and you know you can generate a lot of cash flow from them. At the same time, to ignore the opportunity of creating new IP, to not dedicate a substantial portion of your resources towards developing new IP, is the kiss of death for creative franchises.
Because god forbid, one of your core IP starts to deteriorate over time, then you're in real trouble. So how do we actually manage that to avoid that deterioration or fatigue? One is don't come out with stuff every year."
Slatoff added that "unless it's a sports title," you shouldn't come out with a new release ever year. He said it might be a good way to "monetize the near-term cash flow" but it's not a great idea for the long-run. Well, maybe that's why Activision put out Destiny this year, as the Call of Duty and World of Warcraft IPs seemed to be wearing a little thin...
And while I will always support new IPs, I still want that Red Dead Redemption sequel. Or prequel, whatever. Just give it.
