Nordic: THQ Spent $50M On Darksiders II; We Can't Afford That

Those who fondly recall Darksiders II should probably understand how much it cost to make.

Sure, it was a great game, but according to what Nordic Games boss Lars Wingefors told MCV (as cited by VideoGamer), the amount of money THQ spent on the project was just ridiculous: $50 million.

"THQ spent $50m making Darksiders 2. We can produce a product of the same quality but for a lower cost. $50m is ridiculous, I can't afford that."

After THQ went kaput, Nordic Games picked up several of the former publisher's biggest IPs, including Darksiders, Red Faction, Destroy All Humans, etc. But perhaps even more importantly, Nordic acquired the THQ brand earlier this year, which Wingefors says was a darn good deal:

"The THQ deal was the best I ever made. I spent $5m from my own bank account. It was a lot of money for me, but we got the money back very quickly."

That being said, he's still not prepared to spend $50 million to produce a third Darksiders. While he's convinced he can produce a similar-quality product for much less, we'll have to see it to believe it. Unfortunately, as is often the case in this industry, you have to spend it to make it.

But you never know. Great games are often rewarded even if their production values aren't through the roof.

Or you could just pay the developers less money. Some of these dudes are what make games so expensive. I'm not giving out names, but in a popular game franchise there's about 350 people who all get paid well over 100k just for that year.

It adds up after awhile. Games would be much cheaper if people who WANTED to make games were able to. Its become such a money grubbing Hollywood thing where money is first, and who cares about being true to the product. David Cage is the man for staying true to his vision, even if people talk crap about him.

I honestly think DS1 was the better game. DS2 was great but it went for a more diablo loot action RPG type feel instead of DS1s slower more Zelda like feel. Also the puzzles in DS1 were way better.

I hope they return to that style in DS3, and focus on moving the story forwards, instead of the lateral story they did in DS2. It was good but we were left at the same place.

I'm wondering what they will do with this series though, they could make it story driven where there are 4 acts and you play a different horsemen and then at the end it has you alternating them towards the climactic ending. Or they could make it a 4 player co op game but most likely the story would suffer from that.

Ah well, I'm sure DS3 is a long ways away, so many games to play until it comes out :D

$50 mil?! They include a bunch of hefty cocaine purchases as development tools?
