To Earn A Sequel, Capcom Games Must Sell 2 Million

How many copies does a game have to sell before it warrants a sequel?

Capcom knows its number: 2 million. According to EventHubs quoting a recent Famitsu interview with Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono, this is the necessary plateau for follow-up efforts:

"For instance, if a game doesn't sell over 2 million copies, then we'd have to put the brakes on any plans for a sequel. All that means is that we weren't capable enough. And all we can do after that is to reflect on the experience, take what we can learn from it, and try to apply those lessons on some other title."

And because of that, you shouldn't hold your breath for a Darkstalkers sequel. As for recent Capcom productions that have hit the 2 million mark: DmC: Devil May Cry, Dead Rising 3, and Dragon's Dogma. Actually, it'd be great to see a true sequel to Dragon's Dogma, although I think Dead Rising is beyond tired at this point.

As for a new DmC, well, I think action fans are always up for that. I just wonder if 2 million can be appropriate for every game; doesn't a game's overall budget and associated costs factor in? It's hardly the same for every title, after all...

If there's another DMC they need to follow up DMC4, no idea why they opted for a reboot.

Same story as always, a big table full of Japanese men decided the only way to make their game series better was to westernize it, so they hired a western studio to do a western take on the franchise.

They did a fantastic job, but none of the fans actually wanted that. Once again the honchos just don't listen to fans and make big sweeping stupid decisions like with Final Fantasy.

Don't know why they thought the new Dante was a more Western friendly version.

It was glaringly obvious that we all preferred the old Dante.

DMC4 sold nearly 3 million and it was in the beginning of the ps3/360 consoles so there weren't that many consoles out there. So wheres our DMC5 Capcom?

You can't craft greatness with that attitude.

DmC didn't sell 2 million. So they will have to consider pretending the reboot never happened and continue the old games since those sold very well.

Dragon's Dogma I will not be interested in unless there is an actual interesting world with people in the towns. Distinct towns that are part of the gameplay. I don't know who thought an open world dungeon with a terrible interface was a good idea. They did have some sickly cool ideas that could go forward though.

Actually don't think the PC sales have ever been given for DMC. 360 and PS3 bring it up to about 1.2m, mostly PS3 it sold awful on 360, and it was in many a steam sale so it might actually have sold 2mil but only Capcom would know.

I'd be interested in a DMC5 and Dragons Dogma 2.

Not a fan of DMC as most of you here, but they are pretty fun.

not the new one mind you, the dialogue made me feel sickly.

I don't think the legitimate Devil May Cry games had any dialogue awards coming to them either.

@World
Aren't one of those famous horrible lines people always quote from DMC2. Can't remember what it was but pretty sure it is from when Dante thinks Trish is dead.

2 million discs n digital world wide is a very low number now if they could only get the numbers right for both together that is I mean most sales estimates in the last year I would say r incorrect because of multiplat digital sales aren't reported properly or timly

Now imagine if every company followed this we would have never gotten Dark Souls(Demon's sold 1.7mil) and probably many other games. I can't even imagine the amount of niche Japanese titles that would have never gotten sequels.

I stopped buying games from them some years ago after another crapy RE.
With this statement, I am glad I made such decision.

So instead they invest in a new IPs. And how can this be misconstrued as a "bad thing"? Only in this backwards industry can gamers complain about too many sequels and also complain about a company not making any, even if it is purely business

Capcom tried to flood the market with great games in the sixth gen. God Hand, Okami, Maximo, Shadow of Rome to name a few and all sold dismally even with a user base of 100 million plus. The dopes just wanted Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. .

Aren't you the resident Nintendo fanboy and isn't sequels all Nintendo basically does now?

Dopes?

I'd say that DMC and RE are not for dopes. Most people that are DMC are RE fans are long time console players from the beginning.

Respect your elders.

The only thing Capcom has been doing right is Street Fighter and they better stop with the ULTRA/EXtRA/SUPER additions to Street Fighter.

Other than that... Capcom just like Square Enix, needs help.

One could argue that all those extra versions of Street Fighter are nothing new at all.

They have been doing them since the original SF games.

Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha for example hahaha.

For this site to still be relevant, Dutka needs to start writing coherently.
