"Hdmyboy" Turns GameBoy Games Into High-Def Goodness

The original GameBoy was revolutionary.

Let's say you've got a strong nostalgic streak, but hunching over that little green screen just seems ridiculous. Well, brothers Zane Amiralis and Joshua de Haan may have the solution.

It's a Kickstarter campaign that's gaining a fair amount of traction: It's the "hdmyboy," which allows original GameBoy games to be viewed and played on a separate monitor with 720p or even 1080p visuals.

The hdmyboy is removable and doesn't wreck the original unit. When installed, players can utilize the GameBoy's standard buttons or they can use a modified NES controller. Furthermore, you won't be stuck with that green screen, as they plan to offer "lots of color palettes." Just remember that the project focuses exclusively on the original GameBoy; future iterations of the handheld won't be supported.

If they hit their Ä65,000 funding goal, the final version of the product will be available next year. Let's hope they make it!

Why not just use emulators? It's only illegal to get the game if you don't own the original.

Get emulators for an android phone, get an app to connect DualShock 3's via bluetooth, get chrome cast and there you have it. Or you know, just use your computer.

That's not true at all. Downloading a ROM is illegal, unlicensed distribution. Owning a physical copy does not give you an automatic license for digital distribution.

No more than owning a physical book gives you license to the EPUB, or owning a DVD gives you license to download a MKV file.

Like it or not, that's the law.

The law covers distribution and use of licensed software. It's quite clear.

It's like it's illegal to sell cigs to a minor, but it's not illegal for them to possess them and smoke them (minus the smoke part). If I download software, it's not illegal until I use it without license or if I distribute it.

I wish I could get behind this. But it sounds so...useless. Now if they were remaking those old games with HD graphics, sure. 1080p60fps-ing old 16bit? games just sounds completely pointless.

Well sure, updating a 16 bit game to 1080p and 60fps would be pointless.
But we're talking about 8 bit games featuring a native 160x144 resolution, and up to 4 colors (well, 4 shades of olive green)
so clearly we need this like a fish needs water. ;)
