Tretton: "We Don't Buy Exclusivity"

Multiplatform seems to be the wave of the future, as both Sony and Microsoft have been losing exclusives in the new generation. However, Sony has lost more - and more high-profile - franchises that were previously exclusive, which has prompted plenty of criticism. In response to that criticism, SCEA president Jack Tretton has come forward in the latest issue of PSM, saying, "We don't buy exclusivity."

Tyler "Bender" Wilde, Associate Editor at GamesRadar, leaked part of the feature interview, and in it, Tretton outlines the differences between how Sony and Microsoft approach the likes of exclusivity in gaming. For the sake of this report, we'll assume Wilde isn't randomly making things up (we can't yet confirm the interview, as the PSM issue hasn't been released yet).

"We have a very different approach to exclusives than some of our competitors," said Tretton. "We don't buy exclusivity. We don't fund development. We don't, for lack of a better term, bribe somebody to only do a game on our platform. We earn it..."

Hmm...this sounds like a thinly veiled knock on Microsoft. Then again, he probably has a point, and it's likely not untrue. Tretton goes on to be more specific, mentioning both Sony's competitors in the following excerpt-

"Microsoft is too dependent on the third-party community, and Nintendo is too depended on first-party. We like to feel that we got a pretty good mix."

Well, we'll tell you what, Jack: provided you keep the likes of Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots exclusive to the PS3, we will believe that statement. Then, looking down the road at the software lineup, the comment appears reasonable. We'll be looking for that interview when the PSM hits the stores, just to see what else Tretton has to say.
