Another Man Dies After An Extremely Lengthy Gaming Binge

Online gaming can be dangerously addictive, no matter what anyone says.

Yet another gamer has died, this time after a three-day gaming binge in a Taiwan Internet cafe.

As reported by CNN, a 32-year-old man was found dead after a cafe employee discovered the man slumped motionless over his desk. The scary part is that gamers sitting there continued as if nothing happened when paramedics arrived; this according to police spokesperson Jennifer Wu:

"The CCTV footage from the internet cafe showed that Hsieh had a small struggle before he collapsed motionless."

Apparently, cold temperatures and exhaustion probably contributed to the man's cardiac arrest. He was "unemployed for a long time, and Internet cafes were the only place he could go to." His family also said he would "disappear for two to three days on end," and the Taipei Times claims the man was a "regular customer" who would often play for consecutive days.

All this being the case, the question is not that he could "only go to Internet cafes;" the issue is that it seems it's the only place he wanted to go because he was clinically addicted. This guy would even fall asleep in his chair and the staff wouldn't do anything about it. And this is the second one this year; on January 1, a 38-year-old man was found dead at an Internet cafe in Taipei, evidently after playing for five days straight.

Yes, video game addiction exists. It's right here.

Dozens of people in a small room with little ventilation, playing for days at a time. I bet those cafes have a nice aroma to them.

In all seriousness, this is very sad. It seems like multiple people would have to fail you for something like this to happen. That one couple let their child starve to death this same way. I mean, you would have to be addicted to take it that far without realizing what your doing.

Not to sound insensitive but there are worse ways to go out.

Wish him and his family the best.

Holy fu**ing shit. I got a spot in my heart for addicts, they are mentally ill. Death is coming to us, not a bad way to pass if you are ill.

The sad thing is that while the officials were conducting their investigation, the others were playing like nothing was going on.

Honestly, if you're dumb enough to play for three days straight, without any kind of medical precautions, you're just asking to have a heart attack.

While I feel sorry for this poor guy, a small part of me believes that he deserved what happened. No sane person should try to do any single task for days without proper rest and prior preparations. Whether it's games, or professional sports. Anything for an extended period of time typically never results in anything good.

He was an addict. That's like saying the alcoholic who goes on a bender should've taken "medical precautions" before setting out.

Here in the first world, the establishment has an obligation of care and could be sued by the family.

That place needs to be monitored and regulated instead of just letting their customers/visitors mindlessly play for extensive periods of time. This is the second time and it better not happen again.

That just has sadness written all over it. Condolences to his friends and family.

Gaming definitely has an addictive quality to it, but these extreme cases of binging on games, to me, are a far more troubling sign of addictive personalities.

Anything can pose a risk if the circumstances surrounding the addiction are set in the proper order for disaster.

But, man, people around him are at just as much of a risk to themselves as he was to himself. How do you not take notice? Expect some harsh critism against these cafes. That's completely irresponsible of them to encourage the behavior.

I dunno how anyone can play for such extended periods.
For example, I attempted the Vault of Glass raid last weekend, and after 6 hours straight, my right thumb started hurting! Like to the point where it was extremely painful to aim and shoot.
I'm still feeling a bit of pain when I move it. (a week later)

Granted, he was on a PC, but still...
