Tomb Raider Reboot Becomes The #1 Franchise Entry

It rejuvenated an ailing franchise and put Lara Croft back in the limelight.

Developer Crystal Dynamics has announced that the well-received Tomb Raider reboot that originally launched in 2013 has now sold over 8.5 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling entry in franchise history.

It broke first-day records and first-month sales when it first hit store shelves in March 2013 and now, after the Definitive Edition dropped for new consoles, sales have climbed even higher. Of course, we all remember when those 3.6 million first-month sales didn't meet internal expectations at Square Enix, and we all wondered what fantasy world they were living in.

Well, the quality of the game in question - and the re-release - certainly saved their bacon. Said Crystal Dynamics boss Darrell Gallagher:

"Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game's incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players."

Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara's next adventure, is a timed exclusive for Xbox platforms. But have no fear, PlayStation fans; we all know we'll get the best version of that game a year or so later. ;)
