GameStop Will Start Accepting Retro Consoles, Games

Oh, yes. Maybe I'll finally have a reason to explore the shelves at GameStop.

The retailer recently re-opened trades for PS2 titles and now, they've announced that they're going even farther back.

According to an IGN report, GameStop is planning to launch a pilot program that will involve trade-ins for classic consoles, games and accessories. The fun is scheduled to start on April 25.

They're starting with two test markets (New York City and Birmingham, Alabama), which will include around 250 stores. The company will expand later in 2015 if the test goes swimmingly. If you're in the test area, you can trade in and purchase consoles dating all the way back to the 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System. Other possibilities include the SNES, Genesis, original PlayStation, and more.

Any classic console you trade in will be sent to the retailer's Refurbishment Operations Center (ROC) in Texas, where they will be inspected, tested, and if necessary, repaired. Obviously, they'll need time to build an inventory of these used retro products but when that happens, they'll even be available for sale at GameStop.com.

There's no knowing what GameStop will pay for your old-school consoles and games, nor how much they'll cost for the consumer. These will be critical for the program's success, though, so...

Being that KZ Shadow Fall only gets you barely $1.50, you'd be a fool to think about trading in your retro consoles.

Their webpage now gives you the ability to check trade in values without calling the store now. They give you $1.50 in trade and $1.32 cash

I'm not giving them my original NES.
That's a relic.
Someday when I have the shelf space I'll proudly display it along with a stack of NES carts, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Contra, and more.
